No matter who they supported, many Republicans felt uneasy as they watched the intra-party war unfold. Many voters and insiders alike remarked that when the general election campaign came around, Romney had better attack Barack Obama with the same ferocity he attacked Gingrich. (And, at other times in the primary season, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum.) Otherwise, it would look like Romney took more relish in attacking fellow Republicans than in taking on Obama. Romney had won the Republican nomination in significant part by operating a death star a machine that could rain down holy hell on opponents, if thats what winning required. He had better give the same treatment to Obama.
Now, the general election campaign is here, and the talk is of the Obama killing machine, not the Romney death star. By most accounts, the Romney campaign is not displaying the super-aggressive effectiveness
Gingrich must be chuckling under his breath that this poseur is reaping overdue justice.
Easy. It's used to fighting overmatched and underfunded opponents.
Now he's fighting an opponent with near-equal funding AND the support of the MSM. After he's torn his base apart winning the nomination.
ping to thread.
Serpents seldom, if ever, dine upon their own kind.
Does that include Obama?
The brownshirts are good street fighters!
Virtually no one is paying attention to politics now - except people like us - who aren’t going to be be influenced anyway. What happens now is of little importance in the long run.
These are just the warmup moves by Obama. These are love taps compared to where Obama is ready to go. Remember in the last election Obama accused Todd and Bristol of being sexually active and Sarah being complicit in the coverup. He will top that until this campaign is over.
The way you always win an election is to FIRST SECURE YOUR BASE then try to peel off a faction FROM THE DEMOCRATS.
If you PO your base you will lose no matter how many Democrat votes you get.
Romney and his Mittbots are doomed to fail.
Re: your tag. Got the meaning, but my question is... then who?
Byron York doesn’t impress me, I’d like to see HIM launch an agressive anything.
Romney is tied or very close or ahead in the polls. Obama was going to attack on something and Romney is running response ads in the swing states.
It’s a very interesting question as to who will win, but this idea that the Romney campaign has broken down in the last week is the definition of overreaction.
imho you are witnessing the following. Conservatives who are insecure about Romney or his campaign are giving credence to a media that is more than happy to pretend the whole election just turned on the issue of outsourcing some jobs.
There is no way the legal outsourcing of some jobs is going to be the game changer in November, and the last thing Romney needs to do is get mad about this stupid diversion.
Romney does need to attack Obama and continue to drive Obama’s negatives up.
He’ll probably accuse one of the Romney brothers of attempting to sexually assault one of his (Obama’s) rented daughters.
Cause you’re not allowed to train your fire on the black guy. They are too fragile (that’s why so many of them are playing in the NFL...) /sarc
Romney is light weight when attacking the communists King. Newt would have crushed King Obama by now but simple minded opposition kept up the baggage routine that destroyed Newt’s chances. The Romney push was backed by the communists Democrats who played a great game. But now we have no choice in order to kick the King out, we must support Romney. We have some simple minded on FR that have yet to realize how powerful King Obama is and how close this will be.
Scorched earth now biting Romney on the arse.
They haven’t even had the convention yet. Don’t use up all your ammunition in the beginning of the battle. You hammer the opposition in the last 30 days so the voters will remember. After all, the American public has a severe attention span disorder. Things said and done today will be forgotten within days.
All of you have nailed it. Romney is not going against an underfunded Rick Santorum, he is going against the POTUS machine. Not only is he now over matched, he is utterly unprepared. This is the worst candidate I can remember and I’ve been voting since the 60s. I say again, because we have been handed this feckless fool, we will be slaughtered in Nov. I have decided, quite frankly, that this is not a bad thing as it will purge the GOP elites.
And as much as I have railed against Newt in the past, my God I now wish we had nominated him. Santorum was my choice, but at least Newt would have laid a glove on Hussein.
This is a disaster.
“Newt would have crushed King Obama by now....”
Newt would have self destructed by now. I watched Newt self destruct against Romney. How could Newt possibly withstand a campaign by Obama when he couldn’t even hold the respect of the republican base?
Ok, not a fan of Romney but all this hysteria about his Death Star breaking down or whatever is just silly. First off, Romney never really fired up the Death Star unless he was losing. By all credible polls he is not losing. As a matter of fact, it is the ONE who is in a place that NO incombent wants to find himself in. Secondly, Romney never ever did his own dirty work during the primaries. Instead, it was his surrogates or Super PAC’s that did the hitting. Slowly but surely, we are seeing those surrogates start to kick it into gear and the squealing from the MSM and the Obama campaign in the face of those limited attacks is astounding.
I want a “pound Obama as a dope smoking, lying, failure of an American Hating commie” campaign as much as the next guy. But why throw punches too early when this guy is tiring himself out.
Romney was/is not supposed to attack obama. Romney’s purpose is to be an opponent and punching bag for obama.
Romney is not supposed to beat obama.
Watch Romney’s response to the trap obama and the democrats are setting for him.
Sometimes it seems Romney is an Obama operative.
“Serpents seldom, if ever, dine upon their own kind. “
Plus, it would be so much fun watching the heads of the "moderates" and Commies explode.
And I'm amazed that Byron York is amazed. Mittens is the John Kerry of the GOP - smug, incoherent and without a real conviction in his entire career in public life, except for the dubious and unsubstantiated notion that he should be president. And he's got “loser” written all over him.
Yes, I'm voting for this idiot because Commie Obommie is hellbent on destroying the Republic. But I sure wish it were someone else.
I take one exception to this. Romney was not attacking fellow Republicans, he was a progressive socialist with an R after his name attacking moderate to conservative Republicans.
He has served his role for the elite GOP, breaking the back of conservatives.
Who can still harbor the delusion that the press will not side with the most aggressive communist? Changing that dynamic does NOT remain to be seen. It is a fact of life that the dynamic will not change. If a conservative candidate cannot overcome the absolute certainty that the press will root for Obama, he has no business in the race.
Wasn't this the point that conservatives made early in the primary? That the eventual candidate's message would have to resonate with the grassroots in order to overcome the msm cheering/propaganda war?
1) Newt attacks the moderator, attacks the press, and gets a standing ovation -- nearly unprecedented at a presidential debate.
2) Newt attacks the moderator and totally humiliates him. Newt received two standing ovations in this particular debate.
It was at that point that national coverage of Newt's campaign basically came to a complete stop. He was invisible. He ceased to exist. He actually had money, he campaigned in many locations, and campaigned effectively -- but the media decided that he didn't exist.
Failure to hold the respect of the republican base is not what sank Newt.
“Many voters and insiders alike remarked that when the general election campaign came around, Romney had better attack Barack Obama with the same ferocity he attacked Gingrich.”
It hasn’t happened, doubt that it will, and if it’s not already too late, it’s going to be too late very soon.
According to what I’ve seen, yes. Although one FReeper told me to “vote my conscience.”
I guess I’m too pragmatic for that to be useful advice.
Agree. Reagan won in 1980 with 50.7%. According to Rasmussen, an incumbent's share of the vote on election day is roughly the same as his approval. Zero's approval is currently 46%. 100 minus 46 = 54%.
54% would, by recent standards, amount to a Republican landslide. Even if Gary Johnson and others siphon off a couple of percent, that's still a lot.
I'm just a little concerned that Romney doesn't seem to be spending a lot of the cash he's raised and neither do the Republican super pacs. The Demonrats seem to be firing at will. Granted, they don't seem to be hitting much at this distance.
I hope (and pray) that the Republicans know what they're doing.
It's the McCain template all over again - utterly destroy the careers and reputations of all primary challengers; demean, demoralize and dismiss the base, then go on vacation.
McCain's handlers thought they were throwing us a bone when he tapped Sarah Palin as the VP nominee. Once they realized that Gov Palin was not a crumb tossed from their table, but rather a rocket propelled grenade that re-ignited the conservative base, they (the GOP Establishment) spent the next 4 years trying to annihilate her.
They won't make the same "mistake" again. I look for someone like Pawlenty or Thune to get the VP nod this time. They're not even going to pretend to need the base anymore. What should be an historic landslide election is instead shaping up to be a squeaker. It may be that we lose no matter the outcome.
I guess he is getting it stoked up again:
You betcha, if that wakes up the dead to what is going on with you RINO socialist lovers.
Exactly! Obama is desperate to get the conversation off the economy. If Romney takes the bait and allows himself to get off message, Obama wins. But right now, as Obama and his team try to pound Romney on Bain, outsourcing, "the rich" etc., Americans will notice for a moment, then get right back searching the HELP WANTED ads.
Our Dear Leader will throw everything against the wall, hoping something will stick. Stay focused my FRiends. Now is not the time to go weak-in-the-knees. Stay on message.
Used to be back in the days where people read newspapers and mail, or watched TV news ~ that’s what you would do. Now, you want to lay the landmines early, replenish them from time to time, and just keep that up ~ eventually you’ll get the story over to just about everybody.
Take THAT question and lay it at the feet of the GOP Socialist Party, where it belongs. In their absence, we are left to rally a write-in whom we might unify behind in some decent numbers.
Two socialist/Marxists are not a vote, Scott.
We have yet to get any of Romney's campaigning ~ this is Virginia. He stops and sees a few wealthy people and asks them to donate more money but there's no dealing directly with the people.
This, BTW, is the KEY state in the entire election and you just don't see Romney acting like that is reality.
I think he wants to lose.
Paul, like Romney, is not a real Republican ~
Tactically Romney may be wise waiting till only a week or two before hitting Obama with numerous attacks leaving Obama little or no time to respond.
I’m sick to my stomach at how weak Romney is running this campaign so far. Embarassing beyond words.
I have the feeling that the Romney camp thought the bad economy was going to do their work for them. It still might, but it beggars the imagination that the Romney campaign was not immediately ready to counter Bain-related attacks and did not have several years of tax returns released - and did not have all of Romney's money out of foreign bank accounts years ago.
IMO they got soft due to Romney's overwhelming money advantage in the primary. He doesn't have that now. Now he is against an opponent who will go even lower with the negative attacks than Romney did - and Romney does not seem prepared in advance to counter that.
The Republicans (aka GOP-e) have lost more elections over the last 80 years than they’ve won ~ so, no, they don’t know!
For the same reason that kings don't punish court jesters. It would dignify the jester at the expense of the king's dignity.
