McCain: Palin was 'better candidate' than Romney
Politico ^ | Tuesday July 17, 2012

Mitt Romney's tax returns had nothing to do with Sen. John McCain's decision to choose Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008, according to the Arizona Republican, saying he chose the former Alaska governor because she was a "better candidate."

McCain received more than two decades worth of Romney's tax returns as the former Massachusetts governor was undergoing the vetting process four years ago, far more than Romney has released publicly in the 2012 campaign. Democrats have questioned whether McCain saw something untoward in those tax returns and decided to choose Palin instead.

But on Tuesday, McCain flatly rejected that assertion and grew angry at questions over his decision to choose Palin over Romney.

Asked why he chose not to go with Romney, McCain said: "Oh come on, because we thought that Sarah Palin was the better candidate. Why did we not take [Tim] Pawlenty, why did we not take any of the other 10 other people. Why didn’t I? Because we had a better candidate, the same way with all the others. ... Come on, why? That’s a stupid question."

Big Tiger, I agree...

McCain was a crappy midshipman...he got in because his daddy was an admiral.

McCain was a crappy pilot...he ejected, got shotdown...He served, though which is more than I can say for Clinton and Obama. Even W was a jet jockey which takes a lot of balls, I don’t care what people say...W didn’t crash any planes or lose any, like McCain did...

McCain was a crappy senator...what did he do as a senator besides nothing except for McCain Feingold which got shot down...do I see a pattern?

McCain absolutely sucked as a presidential candidate bordering on being senile...remember him suspending his run to go to Washington and be absolutely worthless during the financial crisis that started when the business community realized that Obama was going to be president after he dry gulched Hillary...when I think that I voted for him on the hope that he would defeat Obama, I just want to puke...

Now McCain is stabbing Romney in the back...

The country is going down in the next four years, irregardless. I am starting to hope that Obama wins so he gets the blame...which he will.

I am starting to regret that I gave my country six years of my life...

Palin is the reason McCain did as well as he did. Definitely not a fan of McCain, but he did bring Palin to the national scene. I wish McCain and company had backed her up during the campaign though.

Sometimes I think that too, but I don't know if we can count on the terminally stupid figuring it out. He has about destroyed our country and look at how many people support him after all that he has done. Maybe some will figure it out when they have no food to eat, but it will be too late then.

Interesting 2008 postmortem here: 5 Myths About an Election of Mythic Proportions.

McCain had to secure his base to avoid a rout. Palin helped him do that. Romney wouldn't have helped him as much.

But the idea that McCain could have won after the October economic mess or that Palin could have won it for him is going too far. She helped prevent the election from being a rout, but she wasn't going to pick up the three percent that would have made a victory.

Romney wouldn't have done that for McCain either. Probably, with some solid Republican voters staying home on election day, the result would have been worse than it was.

McCain knew from the start that he was just a stalking horse for the “Progressives” and was not meant to actually win. IMHO he chose Palin ‘cause she had nice legs and a great rack and would be better to look at during the campaign than the Mittens. /sarc She surprised him and the whole RNC and scared them so much that they thought they might win. Not knowing what to do then they figured out a way to blow the election by shooting their own candidate in the foot at every opportunity.

From the Congressional Record:

Senator McCain on the GAO Report
On Sept. 19, 2000, Sen. McCain, speaking in opposition to the Conference Report on the 2001 Legislative Branch Appropriations bill advised the Senate of details from the GAO’s report. As recorded in the Congressional Record, Sen. McCain stated,

“The GAO now determines that $1.3 billion—and some of those I will read: $974,000 for the Utah State Olympic Public Safety Command; $5 million for the Utah Communications Agency Network; $3 million to Olympic Regional Development Authority, upgrades at Mt. Van Hoevenberg Sports Complex; $2.5 million, Salt Lake City Olympics bus facilities; $2.5 million, Salt Lake City Olympics regional park-and-ride lots; $500,000, Salt Lake City Olympics transit bus loan, and on and on; $925,000 to allow the Utah State Olympic Public Safety Command to continue to develop and support a public safety program for the 2002 Winter Olympics; $1 million for the 2002 Winter Olympics security training; $2.2 million for the Charleston Water Conservancy District, UT, to meet sewer infrastructure needs associated with the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. What the Olympic games supposedly hosted and funded by Salt Lake City, which began in corruption and bribery, has now turned into is an incredible pork-barrel project for Salt Lake City and its environs.” — Sen. John McCain in the United States Senate, Sept. 19, 2000 - [Page S8731-S8748 - Congressional Record.]

Palin didn’t fumble the Bush Doctrine question. Even C. Krauthammer, no fan of Palin and the person who defined the various Bush Doctrines, said her answer was appropriate to the question. Gibson, in his smug manner, got the doctrine wrong. That interview was heavily edited to make it appear Palin was less informed than she was on the interview subjects. There are transcripts out there of her full answers and the edited version of what was seen. It was another example of the incompetence of the McCain campaign. I will agree though, that she is better prepared for the onslaught today than she was in 2008. More experience in that atmosphere will do that.

I’am inclined to agree with you but Michael Savage claims that if he did that he would lose like McCain did. He claims that even conservative women don’t like.

When we went to a McCain/Palin rally in Albuquerque, it was strikingly clear who the crowd was there to see - and it wasn’t Juan!

The rats are jumping ship.

Two faced Mittens was and still is a loser candidate. Economic sociaism/fascism combined with Marxist social ideology is a loser for everything that is free and breathing. Look at history!
