London 2012: G4S Chief Admits Olympic Security ‘a Humiliating Shambles’

As chief executive of a security firm, Nick Buckles ought to be used to hostile encounters. But the embattled head of G4S looked startled, and at times confused, as he faced questions before Parliament in London on Tuesday morning, in the aftermath of revelations that his company has failed to train sufficient security personnel for the London Olympics.

Members of Parliament’s Home Affairs Select Committee didn’t attempt to bite their tongues. With just 10 days to go before the Olympics, they seemed to channel the embarrassment of millions of Britons and their leaders, who have had to call in 3,500 troops to fill the security gap. Here’s one exchange.

“It’s a humiliating shambles, Mr Buckles,” David Winnick, a Labour MP, said.

“It’s not where we want to be,” Buckles replied. “That’s for certain.”

“It’s a humiliating shambles for the country, yes or no?” Winnick asked again, this time a bit louder.

“I cannot disagree with you.”

I don’t think I’d pay the company a cent. They obviously were going to do this as cheaply as possible, which says alot about bad intentions.

They’d better buck-up security in a hurry because the terrorist Muzz will be at the top of their game.

I have no idea why any Country would even want to be a part of this dog and pony show. No longer held to the ideals of amateur athletes and usually leaving the host city hundreds of millions of dollars in debt, trashed, and tons of bad publicity.

The exact same thing happened here in Korea. Private contractors provide security at the gates. We used to have this real good company until the US government went with the lowest bidder, G4S. What a disaster.

G4S pays peanuts, so all of the old good guards quit. G4S didn’t have enough people to provide security so soldiers had to do the job that the G4S was paid to do, just like the Olympics in London.

To fix the manpower shortage as fast as possible (a couple of months)G4S re-hired all of the people they fired for disciplinary reasons. So you can imagine the quality of people guarding our base in Korea now.

Interesting:

G4S

is a British multinational security services company headquartered in Crawley, United Kingdom. It is the world's largest security company measured by revenues and has operations in more than 125 countries. With over 657,000 employees, it is the world's third-largest private sector employer (after Wal-Mart Stores and Foxconn).

G4S provides guarding services at various airports including Heathrow Airport, Gatwick Airport, Oslo Airport, Brussels Airport, Schiphol Airport and OR Tambo Airport as well as at various facilities belonging to the US, UK, Canada and European governments.

It also operates custody facilities (including prisons) and electronic security systems. In addition, G4S provides cash management and logistics services for the main British and European banks. They are also involved in risk management activities, consultancy and support in areas where infrastructure is limited, including services for governments, international peace and security agencies and multi-national corporations. Services also include land-mine clearance, ordnance management and training services. G4S also provides revenue protection services for railway companies across the UK. The company is a contractor in the UK Government's 'Welfare to Work' scheme.

Proof that companies can grift governments far easier than citizens on welfare.
