Skip to comments.(Gov Rick) Perry renews his call for Romney tax docs

Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry on Tuesday reaffirmed his position that candidates should be forthcoming with their tax documentation, finding himself again at odds with Mitt Romney, his party's presumptive presidential nominee.
Perry first called on Romney to release his tax returns when running for the GOP presidential nomination, and in late January, Romney released his records for 2010 and an estimate of his liability for tax year 2011. He has since said that he does not intend to release additional years, as Democrats - and an increasing number in his own party - have called for.
Perry addressed the issue when asked by a reporter in Austin on Tuesday.
"I'm a big believer that no matter who you are or what office you're running for, you should be as transparent as you can be with your tax returns and other aspects of your life so that people have the appropriate ability to judge your background and what have you," he said.
"I certainly think it is inappropriate for the president of the United States to not keep his college transcript and his law school transcript public," he continued. "He should make those available."
Perry ...in January ...
"Mitt, we need for you to release your income tax so the people of this country can see how you made your money," he said. "Listen, here's the real issue for us: as Republicans, we cannot fire our nominee in September. We need to know now. So I hope you'll put your tax records out there this week so the people of South Carolina can take a look and decide if, you know, we've got a flawed candidate or not."
On Tuesday, Romney said in an interview that Democrats would use the records to "distort" him.

Perry is right.
Mitt should release tax records.
Obama should release all records.
I suppose we know now at least one reason McCain might have rejected Romney as VP mate in 2008.
Rick Perry = useful tool (for the democrats)
Romney is in the process of getting this stupid ploy behind him. Why is Perry giving the media fresh stories to write?
Perry is doing this:
1. Because he probably believes what he’s saying.
2. Paybacks are hell
Romney might get away with this, though, if he has the guts to bring up Obama’s records that remain secret.
If he doesn’t have the guts to make that an issue, then the media will gut and fillet him over this.
Perry = NRO
Maybe I missed it but did the dummy also say that barry should release his school records or stop blocking the f/f investigation
Straight out of the Obama / DNC talking points.
Yep. Perry's Dewhurst campaigning and this show that the dreadful performance last year in the campaign was not a singular event. I thank Perry for his championing of the 10th Amendment, but he's looking to be politically dull.
Perry clarified his comments later.
Recognizing that any release will be seen as weakness, and the nittpicking and accusations will never end.
Perry should shut up and stop being a back seat driver.
Perry should say, “It’s Romney’s call” and that is the truth.
Mitt's baby-daddy released 12 years worth of tax records.
Sometimes, I guess, the acorn doesn't fall anywhere near the tree ~ not even in the same part of the country.
Frankly, the Mittbots have more issues to talk about than their master's tax records, but he's made his choice ~ now we'll hear endlessly about Mitt's taxes and all the speculation surrounding that distraction.
What happened to the debates over Obama's destruction of the United States?
Hey, folks, if it's not important enough for Mitt to get into ~ then why do you keep demanding those who oppose his nomination to engage in it.
Question: Did Romney file returns with the IRS ?
Were they accepted ?
End of discussion.
Look to Corsine, Geitner...etc.you want to talk ‘felons’?!
Did Clinton ever release medical records?
Why open THOUSANDS of cans of worms to nitpick over?
yes, he did
What a “heartless” thing to say...
When all you can say about Perry is that he is in the game for Perry, we may want to look at why Obama thinks he can turn Texas into a battle ground state. Maybe Rick heard the Democrats would like him back as state chairman.
There is NO reason for Mitt Romney to release anything. If someone wants to know about Bain, that is probably public. Obama is trying to rope Romney in with the assistance of Perry, Barbour, et al. When Obama publishes EVERYTHING, which is by now all scrubbed and redone anyway, than maybe Romney could release his own college records. Anything with his wife’s name on it should not be considered fair game.
Do you think the IRS failed to audit him?
Do you suspect he committed tax fraud?
Or do you think maybe this is part of obama’s class envy war? Do you think Romney's releasing tax records will end it? Or play into it?
Do you think Romney is too rich to get elected?
Is income honestly earned and wealth honesty built a disqualifier in this election?
Is that in the US Constitution?
Personally I think Romney should release ONLY past 2 yrs of tax returns, his tax returns from his time as Gov of Massachusetts since he was a public servant then, his birth certificate to prove his Constitutional eligibility to by US president, and his school transcripts from kindergarten through law school to prove his academic achievements.
Then refuse any further comment on those publicly posted records
Can you say "Conspiracy to Defraud"?. I knew you could.
” - - - “I certainly think it is inappropriate for the president of the United States to not keep his college transcript and his law school transcript public,” he continued. “He should make those available.”
Duh, I can’t believe that the most “transparent” of all has sealed his school documents.
What is “TRANSPARENT” Obama trying to hide?
I do see the school reference but dont see the ff cover up?
Perry should realize his great state of Texas is turning into a battleground state as HE oversees the conquest.
New York went for Reagan. Now a pro life republican can’t even get on a republican ticket in NY.
It can happen and it is happening.
Obama is playing 60 second prime time network spots in July in Texas and often.
Perry is an idiot.
I just don't think he is always tuned in to his surroundings. Remember how he got confused and made excuses about being tired, et cet...
IMHO, Governor Romney should offer this deal:
“I will release 10 years of my tax returns the day AFTER President Obama “un-seals” ALL the official records he has ordered “sealed”. Those 10 years of copies of my tax returns are already boxed up and ready to go.
I am making this offer because I believe that American voters have a right to know about whatever it is in his past that President Obama is trying so hard to keep secret from us.
Did he flunk Economics in college? Well, we could have guessed that.
Did he receive a preferential college scholarship because he claimed — falsely — to be a “foreign” student? Many people think so.
Was he a drug-pusher as well as a drug-user in college? You know, selling drugs is a felony. A REAL felony. Is THAT Obama’s big secret?
For the record, I am willing to open up 10 years of my tax returns — provided that President Obama actually does open up his own super-secret files. Let me be clear: A promise to “un-seal” whatever he has hidden on some day in the far, far future is unacceptable. A partial release now of some carefully selected records is unacceptable. Americans have grown tired of hearing one self-serving “story” after another. It is time to learn the whole truth.
So, President Obama, when may I expect your acceptance of this good-faith offer of MUTUAL disclosure?”
Actually, I heard that here on Free Republic in the last 2 days. I think it was from an article.
Of course he should release them. But the GOP Elite nominated a feckless fool. I don’t care what’s in the Returns, it is not going to be as bad as what they are going to speculate is in them. besides, be a man. Release them, take the hit and stand up for yourself. However, manhood is anathema to the pathetic Romney.
I'm thinking Santorum may be the not-so-surprising pick.
One can only hope that Romney and his team strategized his response not to release his records. Apparently, Perry disagrees with that strategy.
We know that team Obama could give a rip about earning money in the capitalist system. That argument got Gingrich to back off because conservatives gave him grief over it. But Obama isn’t talking to conservatives. He knows he’s not getting any of them, anyway.
He hasn’t been talking class envy for 2 years because he thinks it’s ineffective. He talking to a whole base of people out there who listen to it.
So, Romney team has made the right call or the wrong call.
1. They think keeping this as the discussion point instead of focusing on the economy has some payoff.
2. They think that releasing the records would be worse than keeping the topic off the economy.
3. They think this will die out.
4. Perhaps they think it’s a way to focus on Obama’s not releasing his records.
Whatever the answer, time will tell if it’s the right strategy.
As mentioned, Perry disagrees with it.
What part is wrong...the “paybacks are hell” part?
But, Perry is saying that he believes record release is the right thing SO THAT the party can determine if the problems are fatal prior to the convention.
My guess is that Holder can gain access to them if he hasn’t already, and that if there’s anything fatal in them that it will be leaked AFTER the convention.
Perry is probably right. We really need to remember that Romney is not the only one with a copy of Romney’s records. Whether IRS, Treasury, Justice, etc., we should be remembering that Obama appointed all those directors.
The Washington Post runs an extensive comments operation on almost all its news stories. One of the best things about their site is that it is only lightly monitored although they have a robo-editor that snags all the nasty words. Today their comments on just one story ~ about Republican concern about Mitt not releasing tax records ~ is rapidly rising toward 5,000 comments ~ see: http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/with-or-without-tax-return-release-pressure-on-romney-ramps-up-from-both-sides/2012/07/17/gJQAbuuBsW_story.html?hpid=z3 And they aren’t all Conservatives and Leftwingtards either.
I’m thinking Santorum may be the not-so-surprising pick.
Can we be so lucky.....We actually don’t deserve such a great conservative. However, if Romney picks him and then drops out, I would be thrilled....lol.
I’m thinking that Obama was speaking of the Hispanic vote when he mentioned Texas would soon be in play.
Perry knows teeth pulling when he sees it.
You say it’s all politics?
Then Obama can justify the cover up of his personal docs, and Myther can justify burying his docs, particularly the Bain wealth, because it’s all politics?
Both these guys need to open their mouth.
Obama knows thers nothing inappropriate in Romney’s tax records.
When Mcnuts asked Romney for his tax records and Romney gave him 20 years worth of back taxes and found nothing inappropriate in them.
The tax gig by Obama&Co is just a ploy to keep away talking points of Obama’s failed term.
Doesn’t surprise me. Team Obama has been building to this for 2 years. They calculated correctly that Romney would emerge the nominee.
The electorate is prepared to stick it to the rich aristocrat. It’s all part of the plan. The entertainment section will be running with it in their sitcoms this fall.
But Romney thinks its worse to release them than to refuse to release.
However, there were those who focused in on LUNCH. By claiming her travel to Anchorage was actually to Wasilla, although her office was in Anchorage, she got to claim lunch in Wasilla even on days when she was actually in Anchorage.
That was really small time stuff, and considering the fact Alaska has an official capital and the state is really run out of Anchorage, it's highly probable that no matter how she handled lunch ~ in Wasilla, in Anchorage, or that other place ~ good old what's it's name ~ she would have claimed a price higher than believed responsible.
I looked into what her taco lunch cost. There are several fast food restaurants in Anchorage that have web sites. What it came down to was unless she ate seafood tacos, she'd have to pay a minimum of $15 for two tacos and a coke!
Seafood was cheap by 48'standards of course, but how many crab tacos can you eat in a week?
The MSM and the Democrat hassle-ists went after her on her lunch.
Can you imagine what they'll do with Romney's older tax filings!
Makes even me shudder!
FF is a good point.
Exactly!! This is the answer all the requests for campaign donations from Romney gets. When he’s ready to stand up on his hind legs, he’ll get my enthusiastic support.
Never made any other grades that low.
It's a veritable badge of honor.
Bet Obama's commie professors gave him A's. And, what about Mitt's commie profs? What did they give him?
He had back surgery and had been using powerful pain medications. Turned him into an idiot for a while. Obviously he had no business running for office!
Nope. Perry’s the one we SHOULD have had as the nominee. Thanks to all who raked him over the coals,we have who we have now. Perry ain’t perfect, but he is honest, and believes what he says.
Right or wrong, it’s Perry’s opinion, and Romney’s choice, Romney will get the issue used against him, just because he is wealthy, whether there is anything questionable in there or not. Perry’s never been wealthy, so he probably doesn’t see it that way. And he’s never played with Chicago thugs, either
Im thinking that Obama was speaking of the Hispanic vote when he mentioned Texas would soon be in play.
If you want to support this ruthless, liberal, flip-flopping creep, you need to learn to live with the fact he has made a lot of enemies and a large number of conservatives can't stand the sight of him.
