Taos man [perp] shot [6 times] in home robbery; no arrest made

Through media collaboration, The Taos News has learned that a 19-year-old man is clinging to life in a Santa Fe hospital after he was shot six times during a robbery Monday morning (July 16).

The Taos County Sheriff's Office failed to return a dozen phone calls from The Taos News about the incident. In addition, no report has been filed and no arrest made in the incident that occurred on Blueberry Hill Road — the same neighborhood where The Taos News reported last week that residents were turned away when asked for an investigation into a series of early morning break-ins over the past year.

According to KRQE News 13, 19-year-old Robert Carpenter was shot six times in the chest and torso area after he returned to the scene of a robbery between 5 and 6 a.m. Carpenter knocked on the door of an undisclosed house and robbed the homeowner at gunpoint, taking $150 worth of marijuana. [The homeowner had a license for medical marijuana.]

But Carpenter then, for unknown reasons, returned to the house and, finding the doors locked and the homeowner unwilling to answer the door, stuck his gun through the home's dog door. The homeowner — whose identity is not being released — then shot Carpenter six times.

Carpenter is currently being treated for his wounds in the ICU ward of St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe.

The Taos News published a report in its July 5 edition that residents of Blueberry Hill and the Las Colonias area were angry with the sheriff's office for what they viewed to be a lack of response to a number of break-ins last fall.

Homeowner Carolyn Johnson, whose home was burglarized through forced entry in October, told The Taos News that when residents asked about the lack of response at a homeowner's association meeting, officers from the department told her "This isn't 'CSI,' ma'am."

The Taos County Sheriff's Office has yet to respond to The Taos News' records request about how many homes had been burglarized.

Q&A with Taos Sheriff Miguel A. Romero Jr, who is running for Magistrate Judge:
Have you run in any previous elections? If so, what was the outcome? Yes. On June 6, 2006, I was elected as the Democratic Nominee for Taos County Sheriff in the primary election. On November 7, 2006 I was elected in the general election as Taos County Sheriff. I served a four year term as Sheriff and decided to run for re-election in 2010. On June 2, 2010, I again was elected as Democratic nominee for Taos County Sheriff in the primary election. I subsequently was re-elected as Taos County Sheriff in the general election on Nov. 2, 2010. I am currently serving my sixth year as sheriff.
.
.
Why are you running for this office? I have always had an interest in assisting the people from the communities of Taos County.

Police questioning homeowner: Why did you have to shoot him six times?

Homeowner: Because my revolver only had six chambers.

‘Homeowner Carolyn Johnson, whose home was burglarized through forced entry in October, told The Taos News that when residents asked about the lack of response at a homeowner’s association meeting, officers from the department told her “This isn’t ‘CSI,’ ma’am.”’

This is the result of abdicating your responsibilities to a govt hireling. At any rate Johnson mustn’t be aware that the sheriff isn’t beholden to protect her or her property. What a bunch of sheep....

I don’t know about everyone here, but six times? Either I’d be at the range practising, or I’d think about getting a gun with a little higher caliber. Something like a 357 magnum, 45 LC, 45ACP, or a .410 revolver with PDX1s in it that will bleed the perp out before EMTs can get to him.

The perp is still alive after being hit six times - in the CHEST?
Either this perp is tough beyond belief or our hero needs a bigger gun!

For us non-TV-watchers, the reporter might have taken half a line to explain what CSI is. Typical journalist school graduate, I guess. Or these days, you don’t even need to go to journalism school to learn all the bad habits.

Methinks they need a new sheriff.

Methinks they need a new sheriff. Evidently he spends too much time watching TV.

I think thug boy stuck his gun through the partially opened door...and then the homeowner shot him through the door. The door slowed the slugs down.

Perhaps he was shot through the closed door, explaining the lack of sudden death?

My thought exactly. Homeowner probably used a BB gun.

I don’t pretend to know the entire story, but I think it reads that the perp stuck his gun through the pet door, so the defender was on one side of the door, and the perp on the other. Pumping all of his rounds through the door not knowing exactly the where the target is seems like a perfectly sane thing to do after seeing a gun pointed into your home.

I gave my daughter a stun gun when she first got married. It was really expensive ($600) and held a lot of damned batteries. Replaceable wire/prong packs, backup contact probes, the works.

I told her if she ever had to use it, to keep zapping the perp until he quit shaking, and then to get the spare batteries I gave her and do it all over. Keep zapping until moving stops. Hell, if I could have afforded it, I’d have bought a portable defibrillator, but would have told her to grease up the sucker’s ears and defibrillate his head....nothing like 400 joules of energy to set the thinking straight...

[I recently signed her up for firearms classes and will give her one of my weapons when she graduates]

CSI is well known in the gun community as a cop show in which the “9MM Asperly Aimless” is the featured weapon. The weapon neither needs to be aimed no does it exhibit even the slightest indication of recoil when fired.

6 for 6 and your complaining? Through a door, no less.

As soon as the shooter is ID'd, I am sending him/her a Trayvon (copyright) Hoodie. Shooter of the Week!

The cops should shoot so well. How many times do I read of cop gun fights with hundreds of rounds fired ... and no perp casualties?

If you want your crimes to be solved in 60 minutes or less, move to Miami.

Oh....I fully accept accounts now of his accuracy.....I’m just disappointed that the ammunition didn’t hold up through the door. The perp should not have been breathing when EMTs arrived.

A once popular six-shooter of modern times was the Ruger Security Six in .38 caliber.

Exterior doors are usually sturdier than interior doors.

I suppose some here would have shot the gun out of the robber’s hand?

I have read similar comments about the guy in the Internet Cafe shooting. Here the guy fired .38 rounds into the perps, each of whom suffered wounds which resulted in them being caught. Had he fired .45 or similar rounds, the people behind him may have been hit too, or he may have missed entirely due to recoil of a bigger gun. Lots of ‘what ifs’ to consider.
