There's a type of liberal who has common sense "locally" and is a nut-job "globally." I know some techies like this.

Most conservatives seem to have common sense "locally" and try to apply that common sense "globally."

Oddly enough, the liberals I describe above are certain that they are applying common sense "globally" also.

And it’s that certanity that they know exactly what needs to be done and that people will actually do what they say that makes me a conservative.

Exactly. Conservatives know you can't just wave a magic wand - pass a law, whatever - and solve a human problem. You have to take the time to understand human nature, human motivations, human weaknesses, etc., in order to come up with solutions that actually might work. And even at that, there are some problems you just can't solve for people. They have to solve them for themselves.

That's why the United States Constitution is fundamentally a conservative document. That's why it bothers liberals so, and why they can never be reconciled to it.
