For the First Time, Canadians Now Richer Than Americans
US News ^ | 7/18/12 | Meg Handley

While Americans might enjoy throwing politically-charged barbs at their neighbors to the north, Canadians now have at least one reason to be smug.

For the first time in recent history, the average Canadian is richer than the average American, according to a report cited in Toronto's Globe and Mail.

And not just by a little. Currently, the average Canadian household is more than $40,000 richer than the average American household. The net worth of the average Canadian household in 2011 was $363,202, compared to around $320,000 for Americans.

Socialism causes everyone to be equally poor.

That’s because they a Conservative government in power, not a bunch of idiot socialists.

Additionally, these results are skewed because of Canada’s real estate bubble - my buddy bought a rundown fixer-upper in a crappy area of Toronto, that was wildly overpriced at $550,000.

Obama has fulfilled one campaign promise. He *has* fundamentally changed America — just not for the better.

Obama — the United States’s answer to Juan Peron.

GDP (PPP) per capita

USA = $48,387
Canada = $40,541

Shouldn’t they ask what is the median net worth? “Average” here is not a useful comparison. Imagine one Canadian family worth $4B dollars averaged with 10,000 families with $0 net worth equals $400,000 average household net worth, versus 10,000 USA families net worth each 320,000... which is better off? Anyone with basic knowledge of statistics would not make this mistake, so I presume it is intentional...

The PPP model is not perfect and it can be skewed by fluctuations in prices of services and goods.

But it gives a good long term picture of the standard of living between two countries.

As a Canadian I have to say this is comparing apples to oranges. It is like someone making $40,000 in New York would have a diminished standard of living compared to someone making $40,000 in Cheyene, Wyoming. Consumer staples are much much more expensive in Canada. I laugh when I watch those US shows where extreme coupon shoppers walk away with $400 worth of groceries for $20. You just can't do that in Canada. We also haven't seen a correction in our housing prices that the US has seen, and that may be yet to come.

Harper really isn’t that conservative. His government has increased government spending in excess of 6% every year since 2006.
