The GOP Establishment Couldn't be More Wrong on Romney's Tax Returns

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: I don't want to get on a tangent here, but I know that there's been this ongoing discussion of whether or not Romney ought to release more tax returns. I got home yesterday afternoon and I saw practically the entire Republican establishment thinks he should. What an asinine thing to suggest. The National Review, a big, long editorial explaining why Romney should do this. It was silly. I'm convinced people on our side in the establishment don't know who we're up against. This is not commonplace politics-as-usual. You can't reason with these people.

So Obama and the Democrats are demanding that Romney release more tax returns and people on our side, "Well, I think he should. I think he should get the issue off the table." It's not gonna get the issue off the table. The Obama people don't want Romney's tax returns released so they can find out if they're aboveboard. It doesn't matter what they say. They're going to be mischaracterized and used to hurt Romney. Romney's right to hang in tough on this. I couldn't believe this was even a matter that people would think about for longer than five or ten seconds 'til I saw all these names of people on our side. National Review, George Will, I mean the list is long, Bill Kristol, people that think Romney ought to do this.

You can't reason with these people. Why would we want to acquiesce to their demands? Why would we want to please them? Why would we want to get their approval? We ought to be the ones making demands that Obama release things and come clean. We ought to be making demands that the media finally go vet the guy and tell us all who he really is. We already know. They continue to try to hide it.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: I don't think Romney ought to release his tax returns, quite honestly.

I love these guys. This is really hard. National Review was crucially important to my conservative education. As you all know, one of the biggest thrills of my life was to have been able to meet William F. Buckley Jr. And sometimes they do things over there that I just don't understand, and yesterday they had this big editorial where they join the chorus with the Democrats demanding that Romney release all of his tax returns back to the day he was born, probably before. I hope Romney is keeping track of who on our side is caving to Obama's demands. I hope he understands it's the Tea Party sticking by him and not the establishment Republicans. I hope Romney understands that it's the Tea Party and the conservative base that is supporting him on this tax return issue. That it's the Republican establishment and their associated media allies which are trying to acquiesce to demands from the Obama campaign, from the White House.

This is not commonplace politics. This is not going to make the issue go away. All these guys want the issue to go away. They want the issue of Romney's tax returns to go away. It's almost as though the tax returns are their own and they just want it to go away. How they don't understand that all it will do is amplify the tax issue, the wealth issue, and give Obama, the Democrats hundreds of thousands of pages of stuff to lie about, to distort, how this is not understood is peculiar to me. But I guess it shouldn't be. I do think that it's an indication there are still people on our side who do not understand who these people are. They're not just the Democrats of the day.

This is not the Democrat Party of Joe Lieberman. Joe Lieberman, who was Algore's running mate in 2000, has been drummed out of this party. He had to run as an independent for his own Senate seat, whenever the last time he ran. This is not the Democrat Party of Bob Strauss, all these old guys that go out and have a cocktail at the end of the day and talk about how wonderful it is to run Washington and so forth. These are radical, monothematic ideologues who have no desire to be reasoned with. They have no desire to be treated reasonably. That's a sucker bet.

I guess it shouldn't after this many years, but it still surprises me that so many fall for this. I guess, you know, the realization to the Republican establishment is that a full-fledged conservative nominee is a guaranteed loss because, to them, a full-fledged conservative nominee equals a Goldwater-landslide defeat. For some reason, they don't associate full-fledged conservatism with Reagan-landslide wins. They see Goldwater. They see independents getting nervous and not liking conservatives.

They see the same things the liberals see in many cases. It's, I think, the result of never getting out of Washington. It's living in that place where there is definitely a political culture, a social culture that is insulated from the rest of the country. We're in a war here with no rules. We're in a political war with no rules, where truth and being reasonable and taking the high road doesn't get you anything, with the other side. Taking the high road and trying to reason with these people is not gonna get their respect.

Why would you want it anyway?

If Rush were running for office I'd like to know about his tax filings.

Doesn't matter why either. Fact is a dude running for public office is asking me for my vote. I don't just give it away!

If he's running for President he will have the privilege of calling up IRS and asking for my last lebenteengazillion tax filings and looking them over. It's a simple courtesy to inform us before hand.

Or, if he thinks that is just wrong, then he can go get another job or something.

There's nothing personal in this either. If Jesus were running for President I'd want to see his tax files.

I’ve been saying this since 2000. We need to get down in the mud with these progressives, choke ‘em out, and kick ‘em in the nutz every chance we get. They wrote the rules. Its time they started being on the receiving end. Being “respectful” when fighting a rabid enemy is not a good strategy.

Absolutely right.

Don’t lose our leverage, until Zer0 rescinds his EO sequestering all his past records. We don’t want Zer0 to release more records, we want the schools, Soc Sec, DOD, Hawaii, to have the ability to release real records untouched (up) by Zer0 and his crooks.

After Zer0 opens his kimona, Romney will release his older tax returns.

How can Obama’s lack of transparency be an issue
when Milt Romnety shows the same problem.

JUST LIKE TARP.

JUST LIKE OBAMACARE/ROMNEYCARE.

It is idiotic not to release and demand that Obama follow
the same with HIS records (except Romney protects him, too).

Romney’s father started the deal of revealing tax returns.

To: Kaslin; All
George Will, Bill Kristol, Christopher Buckley, Peggy Noonan, David
Brooks, and many of the NROL “intellectuals” are among the over-educated nitwits who gave us Obama in the first place. Now they're telling Romney what to do to keep him. It's just like Bill Bennet in 2000 telling George Bush to answer all questions about his (Bush's) alleged cocaine use. Instead, Bush did the right thing and said he'd only answer direct allegations, thereby killing the whole issue.

Romney's in a far better position that Bush. He can and should say he'll reveal his tax returns if, and only if, Obama reveals all of his heretofore hidden academic, Illinois bar, medical, immigration, and legislative records, and drops the stonewall on the Fast and Furious subpoenas, revealing all of those records. That will force the media either to carry the issue back to Obama or drop it. If the MSM and Obama don't drop the tax return demands, then Obama will have a really hard time explaining why he won't release the records Romney has demanded.

I agree.

Also, there are a LOT of undecideds and independents, and this *WILL* matter to them.

A person who can’t be honest and competent WRT their taxes does not deserve to be president.

But then I fear Willard more than Obama in some ways; with Obama we conservatives are not going to let our guard down, with Willard the crucial few RINOs have cover for things like taxes and supreme court votes. Just my .02

Romney should release his old tax returns and other similar products, college records. Do this at a press conference, and calling on Obama to release all of his records from his past, college, visa, etc. It would be a nice coup.

If not, the media will drag this out.

IF he releases, not saying he should, he should release to an independent3rd party and then issue the challenge to Obummer - release your school applications, transcripts, etc and then, when verified, my tax returns will be released

Not just the media. Guy has enough money to have had his taxes filed correctly. If he screwed up .................... well, let’s just say that shows he’s not a wise steward.

Good point. Why is it Romney is now covering up for Obama on things we probably ought to know.

Just how bad is it over there in Obamaland? What did he do? Who is he really?

And, again, why is Romney running cover for him?

I don’t care who started it. The enemy is Obama and his legions of braindead zombies. You don’t let the enemy choose the battleground, and the weapons, and let him fight dirty while you politely stand in a corner waiting for the bell. This isn’t an election. This is the political maneuvering that preceeds a civil war. If Romney doesn’t win and then betray us, we’ll never be able to admit that the entire government and two-party system is the enemy of the Constitution and a sizable portion of the people will continue to fool themselves into believing that things will get better if “our” party wins.

Mitt Romney 2003-2007 = No Government check and 10% tything plus others.
Barack Obama 2003-2007 = Government check for voting present. Bupkis for charity

They want Mitt’s returns because they want to make Foreign Investments sound like a felony.

No, it's even more innocuous than that. They want to make it about "rich people things" like horses. They really don't care about potential tax issues, they want to poke at the lifestyle.

Just like the Obamabots here.

Rush, I hate to break it to you, but Buckley died about 5 years ago. Rush, today’s National Review wouldn’t do much to educate you in conservativism. It might educate you on how to capitulate.

His own father thought a candidate for President should reveal everything.

Who am I to step between a man and his dad.

You are insulting Romney's father.

Besides that you are forgetting what it was like 40 years back living constantly in the shadow of the Soviet Threat to rain nuclear missiles down all of us.

Even then the candidates were revealing their taxes.

Now, final hit on your thesis ~ Geithner ~ he fessed up, and we found out what a bunch of dunderheads Obama had recruited. We need to have some idea that Romney is better at this ~ no sense going from a President with gold brickers to a gold bricking President!
