Latest Quinnipiac poll: Romney, Obama tied in Virginia (Trending away from Obama)

According to the latest Quinnipiac poll, Mitt Romney and Barack Obama are in a dead heat among Virginia's voters, with each of them receiving 44 percent of the population's favor. The pollsters note that this does, however, constitute a shift in Mitt Romney's general direction over the past few months, and Virginians are starting to trust Romney more on economic issues:

Republican challenger Mitt Romney wipes out President Barack Obama's lead in Virginia and the two candidates are deadlocked 44 - 44 percent in the race for the Old Dominion's 13 electoral votes, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

This compares to a 50 - 42 percent lead for President Obama in a March 20 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University and a 47 – 42 percent Obama lead June 7.

By a narrow 47 – 44 percent, voters say Romney would do a better job on the economy. But voters support 59 – 36 percent Obama’s call to raise income taxes on households making more than $250,000 per year. Support is strong among all income groups – except voters in households making more than $250,000 per year, where 48 percent support the idea and 51 percent oppose it.

I’m usually pretty darn proud of my home state of Virginia — at least relative to other states, the Old Dominion just seems to have its head screwed on correctly. With a moderately conservative governor leading my ecologically beautiful, historically rich state to multiple budget surpluses, a well-ranked business and regulatory environment, and very doable concealed-carry laws, Virginia has very rarely given me cause for dismay. The notable exception was in 2008, when my traditionally red state was swept up in the thrill of Hopenchange and went blue, giving Barack Obama its 13 electoral votes.

Having lived most of my life divided between the DC suburbs and Charlottesville — two of Virginia’s liberal epicenters among the conservative heartland — it’s been easy to note the palpably permeating feeling of ‘I’m-a-sophisticated-moderate,’ coastal semi-elitism among the populace contributing to the commonwealth’s newfound presidential purplishness.

So, now I’m left wondering: with Virginia’s shifting demographics, was 2008 the herald of a trend toward a bluer state; or will Virginia’s long history of level-headedness prevail now that Obama actually has a record behind him instead of just airy-fairy slogans? There are any number of factors to consider — the large Latino population, the high concentrations of young professionals, etcetera — but I think you can guess the outcome for which I’m rooting. I don’t want to have to move just yet.

Maybe that’s a “tie” but if only 44% would vote for the incumbent, ne ain’t getting 51% in the election.

A lot is being said in the media about Mitt Romney not being “likable” or that he doesn’t “relate well” to people. Frankly, I struggled to understand why. So after much research, I have come up with a Top Ten List to explain this “unlikablility.”

Top Ten Reasons To Dislike Mitt Romney:

1. Drop-dead, collar-ad handsome with gracious, statesmanlike aura. Looks like every central casting’s #1 choice for Commander-in-Chief.

2. Been married to ONE woman his entire life, and has been faithful to her, including through her bouts with breast cancer and MS.

3. No scandals or skeletons in his closet. (How boring is that?)

4. Can’t speak in a fake, southern, “black preacher voice” when necessary.

5. Highly intelligent. Graduated cum laude from both Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School...and by the way, his academic records are NOT sealed.

6. Doesn’t smoke or drink alcohol, and has never done drugs, not even in the counter-culture age when he went to college. Too square for today’s America?

7. Represents an America of “yesterday”, where people believed in God, went to Church, didn’t screw around, worked hard, and became a SUCCESS!

8. Has a family of five great sons....and none of them have police records or are in drug rehab. But of course, they were raised by a stay-at-home mom, and that “choice” deserves America’s scorn.

9. Oh yes.....he’s a MORMON. We need to be very afraid of that very strange religion that teaches its members to be clean-living, patriotic, fiscally conservative, charitable, self-reliant, and honest.

10. And one more point.....dumb asses say because of his wealth, he can’t relate to ordinary Americans. I guess that’s because he made that money HIMSELF.....as opposed to marrying it or inheriting it from Dad. Apparently, he didn’t understand that actually working at a job and earning your own money made you unrelatable to Americans.

1. “The gloomiest new forecast came from Stephen Stanley of Pierpont Securities, who now sees just 0.6% growth in the April-to-June quarter, and only 1.25% in the current September-ending quarter.”

2. 41 straight months of 8%+ unemployment.

If Obama wins, it will be a huge upset. He’s not going to win. He’s not going to get re-elected with those numbers.

This is a poll of registered voters.

Of those polled, only 40% will vote (statistically).

Since the measure of voter enthusiasm in Virginia was not quantified, the poll is useless. With a 60% non-participation rate, even the trends are useless, and are represents random noise rather than some kind of election day prediction.

IOW - garbage.

Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,673 registered voters

Two leftward biases -- Quinnipiac & registered voters.

It's even worse for Hussein than it sounds. He may need to start a war and suspend elections.

RE: The state that voted in McDonnell and Ken Cucinelli is NOT going to re-elect Barack Hussein Soetero Davis O’Bummer.....

I got an idea for the Romney team:

McDonnell for VP

Ken Cucinelli for Attorney General

That will create the death knell for Obamacare AND support Arizona’s immigration policy AND Florida’s election roll cleanup.

Talk about killing 3 birds with one stone.

What an absolute low-life Romney is TAMPERING with our election process - just like the LIBERAL he is and using the liberal media to spend millions with ATTACKING ads against Newt with mitt damnable LIES!! Only a godless creature would be that low. He won nothing - he robbed it.

I don't believe Romney has been behind in this state and most other close call states.

I believe the pollsters are simply exercising an incremental easement into reality for Obama.

'Where is Diogenes to rip Romney as he usually does?'

i think DIOGY might be kind of dodgy on the subj. of mitt...

If Annie and Rush are behind him the Mittster then he's okay by me.....she's Mich. law Review with 8 best sellers under her belt an Rush is a stone genius ....

So all things bein equal I'm goin with the opinion of those two winners...not the anti Mitt ku ku's you sometimes see here...

It's not really garbage, because whether or not you agree with the methodology, the trend is what is important.

Also, you are incorrect about the percentage of registered voters who vote. During presidential years, registered voters going to the polls often reach near 80% in areas like Virginia. But not everyone is registered (thankfully), so those who actually vote hovers from 40% to 50%.

I don't know the percentage in 2008, but I believe in places like Virginia, over 50% actually voted and in some areas like Arlington, the percentage of registered voters who voted went north of 80%. So perhaps not so garbage.

In the 2008 election, 85.1% of the registered voters in Goochland County, Virginia voted. It was the highest turnout in the Commonwealth. It also voted 60+% for McCain/Palin. All the numbers can be seen at the Virginia State Board of Elections.

I, also, question a poll that excludes Virginia’s Virgil Goode, of the Constitution Party, from it. Virgil Goode is, still, popular with many Virginian voters, and Virgil could, still, indirectly, end up helping Barack Obama take Virginia.
