'I knew he was going to kill me,' says 66-year-old woman who shot intruder in Flint(MI)

FLINT, MI -- Facing a menacing intruder in her home on Wednesday night, 66-year-old Rosa Myles said she was "nothing but a trembling leaf."

With a gun in her hand.

Fearing for her life, she shot the intruder once in the chest.

"He said 'don't shoot me again," Myles said.

She fired again anyway, this time striking him in the left arm.

"There were so many things running through my mind," she said. "I knew he was going to kill me."

Two gun shot wounds, however, were enough to send the man running from the home -- only to be caught by police within minutes at a nearby home.

On Friday, Dominique M. Carter, 19, was arraigned on first degree home invasion and assault with intent to rob while armed charges. He had a large cast on his arm and hospital gown over his body, looking very much like he messed with the wrong woman.

Myles said she was saying her nightly prayers around 11:50 p.m. Wednesday at her home on Baker Street near Dupont when she heard a noise coming from the back of the home. She thought it might be rain, but she decided to check.

Suddenly, a tall man lunged with a knife at her, grabbing her hand. Unable to move around very well and using a walker, Myles was able to put up little resistance. He began pushing her around, demanding jewelry and money.

She told the intruder that there was some cash in the bedroom. He took her there and was going through the cash.

Then a thought came upon her -- the gun her son had gotten for her a couple months ago was at the foot of the bed.

Myles eased over to it, and grabbed the case. She then asked to use the bathroom, and he let her go.

"I was shaking so bad just trying to get the case open," she said. "The fear was insurmountable."

But Myles said by the grace of God she was able to get the case open. She walked back to the bedroom where the intruder was still counting money.

Myles said she still is flabbergasted that the man asked her not to shoot him again.

"I said you just came into my home and tortured me," she said. "You don't tell me what to do."

Myles called 911 and waited for police to come.

Friday, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said Myles will not face any charges in the shooting.

Myles said she still is having trouble sleeping, scared that someone else may try to break into her home.

She said she didn't want to die at the hands of an intruder.

"Something just said 'fight,'" she said. " I said 'I can't let my sister find me like this.'"

She did hit him in the chest. Surprising he could still try to escape.

Friday, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said Myles will not face any charges in the shooting.

The fact that the authorities feel the need to make such a ridiculous statement always amazes me. That being said, the lady should now keep the gun beside her bed, fully loaded and without the case. It should be handy for quick action.

Nice to see a bitter, gun-clinging bible-thumper with a sense of humor.

She probably needs to get another gun. the police likely have the one she used and she will have a hell of a time getting it back.

I was thinking the same thing. No wonder she can’t sleep. I wonder if we can get her another gun right away, somehow?
