SHELOCTA, Pa. -- Tom Smith was mowing wheat on his 400-acre Armstrong County farm last summer when he decided he would run for U.S. Senate.
Smith was born and raised on this stretch of land an hour's drive outside Pittsburgh where coal mines neighbor corn farms, and he remembers wondering that day how the national debt would impact his grandchildren, some of whom also live on the farm. After talking it over with his wife and his pastor, Smith changed his voter registration from Democrat to Republican, and began a bid for the Republican nomination to challenge incumbent Democrat -- and Pennsylvania brand name -- Bob Casey.
I was raised in a time where a farm boy, just a farm boy, who knew how to work, could follow his dream and achieve it, says Smith, who later made millions owning several coal mines close to his farm and is self-funding a substantial part of his Senate bid. This country gave me the opportunity to come off the farm, start my own business and do reasonably well. My goodness gracious sakes alive, who wouldnt give a part of his life to protect that for future generations? He couldnt have a heart if he didnt.
Smith, 64, sounds earnest in his willingness to leave this bucolic setting for frenzied Washington. But his challenge to Casey is a long shot. The RealClearPolitics average shows the first-term senator leading Smith by 15 points. A June Quinnipiac University poll finds Smith trailing the incumbent by 17 points overall, and 14 points among independents. Smith is a relative unknown in the state, while his opponent is a former state treasurer, the son of the late, well-known and...

But Casey has failed to break 50 percent in the polls, a potentially vulnerable position for an incumbent...

Casey is an idiot. All Mr Smith has to do is get him in a debate. He (Casey) cannot talk and when he does, sounds like an absolute imbecile. He won on his father’s name, his handlers never let him debate or speak in public. Mr Smith needs to get out there and not give up!! He can beat this guy!
I can’t believe this is the first time I heard about this Race for the November Election! We have to get the Brain Dead,Communist Loving Casey OUT ON HIS ASS this NOVEMBER!
The Republican Party MUST FIGHT EVERY DARN CORRUPT VOTE by the PHILLY MACHINE this ELECTION!

PA Ping!
If you want on/off the PA Ping List, please freepmail me. Thanks!
Shelocta is just up the road from Indiana, PA, hometown of Jimmy Stewart, so this could actually be “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, part deux” :-)
I have been writing to Casey for the past couple of years telling him we plan to send him home at the end of his first term...
and we will with the help of Pennsylvania voters..I always refer to him as the church mouse...quiet and hidden..he always send me ‘form’ letters and Democrat talking points which never address the questions I’ve sent to him...
so I will be glad to get the name Smith out to my area here in Somerset County..where we ALL will remember flight #93 and 9/11/2001

He has MY vote. That turd Casey must go,
I know what you mean! I get the e-mailed form letters too! Casey needs to GO!!
What a useless waste of space!
If he was dumb enough to remain a registered Democrat through Johnson, Carter, Clinton and several years of Obama, I don’t hold out much hope for him.
I was a very conservative Reagan Democrat and changed my party affiliation and never looked back. I was democrat because my parents and grandparents were. I dare say a lot of freepers could say the same. Smith has been supporting conservative Republicans for years, and is a member of the local Tea Party group - which is made up of all parties. He’s the real deal. He’s been at the forefront of the local campaign against Obama since the beginning. I’ll gladly cast my vote for him.
Thanks for the background; he still kind of looks one issue—coal (Manchin type), but I’d take your word for the rest.
Bob Casey= effin lawyer
Farmer Smith = farmer, miner, entrepreneur, employer job creator
Choice is obvious
I’ll be voting for him.
Farmer Smith may be the real deal, but explaining that to PA — forget it.
Pa went with a Republican governor this time. I hope people will vote the same for senator. Hopefully, with the new voter ID laws, the dead voters in Philly and Pittsburgh will stay buried!
That looks like a picture from the 1871 Beers Atlas of Indiana County!
