Note to media: Despite horror, Americans are safer

Listening to the crush of media coverage and the sickening politicization of the murders in Colorado, we should not let it escape our attention that despite all the violence and sadness brought on by this event — I lived in Denver for years, and I’ve taken my children to the Aurora theater, so I get it — most of us live in a far safer place than our parents.

All day, I've watched television pundits talk about the country as if we were saturated in non-stop violence. The simple fact is that over the past decades we have become a more peaceful place. Steven Pinker's fascinating book "The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined" is a macro view of this historical worldwide trend, but during my lifetime, crime rates and gun violence have fallen – dramatically.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, in 1994, the United States hit an ugly peak with 13,981 murders by hand gun. By 2005, the last year the study is available on the site, the number was 8,478. Death by other guns also decreased from 3,094 to 2,868 during that time.

In 2010 there were 14,748 “murder and nonnegligent manslaughters” in the United States. That's the lowest number since 1969. Even during this recession, crime has kept falling for the most part, and baffling experts.

Nothing can stop a sick person bent on murder. But all the scaremongering about guns and crime doesn’t reflect reality.

There's only one reason why Americans might be safer -- the good guys (like the 71 year-old gentleman in Ocala, FL) are armed to take down the thugs. I'll be heading off to church in a few hours and everyone I know there is a gun owner, including the preacher. Woe unto the goon who tries to make off with the collection plate.

Still, I very much doubt these figures. They seem manufactured to paint a positive picture of our country under Obama and his Crime Family. He and Eric Holder have given license to blacks ("My People" as the AG characterizes them) to do violence against whites with no consequence. Witness the rise of the flash mobs and the ho-hum attitude taken by the corrupt bunch in DC toward the New Black Panthers.

Technology plays an important role in the recent reduction in violent crime.

Ever present security cameras mean the risk of being identified goes up and constructing a plausible alibi becomes much more difficult.

Ever present cell phones mean a crime is more likely to be called in, often in real time.

Potential criminals must turn their own cell phones off, or not carry them at all, which is an instant red flag to Police and juries.

Potential criminals must worry now about leaving even tiny traces of DNA at the crime scene.

Transportation to and from a crime scene is more complex - more cars have GPS, and all new buses are equipped with HD cameras.

The number of crime targets has gone down since fewer people carry cash, and usually less of it, because of debit and credit cards.

Crimes of passion and crimes of deranged minds will always be with us.

But the day of planning a successful crime is slowly but surely coming to an end.

Of all the gun violence we see out West, how many are due to illegals?

They make sure no stats on that are kept.

Just as they refuse to keep stats on DUI and deaths caused by illegals.

Do anti-gun proponents think they will stop all violence if they take away all guns? Earlier this month about one hundred miles from my house a father murdered his three young daughters with a knife. How would banning guns have stopped that? Furthermore, I believe the anti-gun people want to take away hand guns. Do they really believe a crazy person with no access to a handgun wouldn’t use a rifle or a shotgun?

I’ve seen reports of mob violence - but not of gun violence by mobs, and the statistics presented were for handgun violence specifically.

Interesting points indeed. How long until new handguns all have GPS embedded?
