Penn State president orders Paterno statue removal
Associated Press – 4 mins 2 secs ago

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State University will remove the famed statue of Joe Paterno outside its football stadium, eliminating a key piece of the iconography surrounding the once-sainted football coach accused of burying child sex abuse allegations against a retired assistant.

The university said Sunday that it will take down the larger-than-life monument in the face of an investigative report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that found the late coach, along with three top Penn State administrators, concealed the abuse claims against Jerry Sandusky more than a decade ago in order to shield the university and its football program from negative publicity.

Construction vehicles and police arrived shortly after dawn Sunday, barricading the street and sidewalks near the statue, erecting a chain-link fence then concealing the statue with a blue tarp.

A live video feed posted on the website of the Centre Daily Times of State College showed workers in white hard hats draping a plastic sheet over the statue, preparing for its removal.

One student even vowed to "chain myself to that statue" if there was an attempt to remove it.

Pathetic.

The State Penn needs to put former Prezzy Spanier (the noted Wife Swapping Studies Scholar) in the stocks in front of the Admin Building and fire him from his cushy professorial job.

Joe Pa took what he thought was the easy way out....and destroyed the lives of at least a dozen children.

hopefully the NCAA will pull their ability to play sports under their governance for at least 5 years.

Should be more like after five years of the sports death penalty. Let everyone there opt to transfer without the penalties.

I like the idea of cutting the crotch out of it with a blowtorch.

Because when he needed to do the right thing and protect kids who were being sexually abused by a pedophile, Paterno was a dickless wonder with no balls at all.

Let the statue be made to conform to the man.

Or how about just use the torch to heat up his hips to bend him over with his head in the dirt and his arsche in the air, just so Sandusky has something to dream about.

Penn State have brought this shameless day upon themselves. This is why you should not build statues of people until they are dead. The same thing is going to happen to all the Obama worshipers when the people take away the naming of streets and schools from that fowl evil man.

He is seeing it, on every coffee break.

Old joke;
Paterno meets his maker and his judgement. Upon arriving in hell, Satan greets his new arrival and explaining he will spend eternity with the countless others he sees in a pit. Everyone is standing up to their chests in what can only be described as the Port-o-let discharges and drinking coffee. He figures he will get past the smell over time and is shoved into the awaiting crowd.

About five minutes after his cup of coffee just appears in his hands, a loud horn blasts three times, the coffee disappears and the announcement comes from above, Coffee break is over, everyone back standing on your heads!

Heard that more than one person was going to chain themselves to the statue. And “JoePa’s” (doesn’t the name JoePa have a nice, kindly, grandfatherly ring to it? sarc/) name will remain on the library. They need to erase every trace of the bastard, not just take down the statue.

PSU probably would've waited a few more days to remove the statue, but the Aurora tragedy gave them the perfect opportunity to pull it off now with most of the country (they hope) distracted.

Agree, except I think the college should be shut down, as an example to others who try to cover this up.

You think the entire school, from the President to the trustees to the school Deans, etc., knew what was going on?

I’m hearing speculation on sports radio that the statue may be moved to another, less conspicuous location, such as inside the stadium along one of the concourses.

I say once it’s down leave it down.

I heard that Paterno’s name is still on the library and that some at Penn State were considering moving the statue inside. Is Penn State sorry if they show actions like this? I don’t think so, I think some there liked the Paterno money too much and it shows until this day.

I’m not saying the statue should remain but the blanket over the head is one of those faux-dramatic touches that ESPN will love. If the statue is to be removed never to return then why attempt to protect it from damage - eh, PSU?

The hard hats and hi-viz vests are a sad commentary on the nanny state.

Beyond the obvious warnings about sexual predators and their witting and unwitting accomplices, it should also be a deterrent to the recent mania of statues popping up outside sporting venues everywhere. A statue is a permanent thing so be prepared to take the rough with the smooth. Should we tear down the Colosseum because Christians were killed there?

I agree...death penalty...one year for each victim whom testified in court under oath.

Look at what happened to SMU....death penalty killed their recruiting, equipment, maintenance, salary, personnel, etc.

NCAA needs to kill ALL sports at that college, not just football, come back in a decade and start fresh.

All titles, scores, and awards stand, and current athletes get to either transfer to another NCAA school, or add one (1) year to their eligibility in case they want to finish up academic work at Pedd State.

Good question. Check this out: Abuse Scandal Inquiry Damns Paterno and Penn State"

It's very likely many of them knew, but all I really want is for the punishment to be severe enough that any other college leader would think twice before covering something like this up.

Are these the same ones that did this investigation ?

Climategate: Penn State Professor Mann under investigation

From the link...

"The University is looking into this matter further, following a well defined policy used in such cases. No public discussion of the matter will occur while the University is reviewing the concerns that have been raised.

My question: What does this say for the integrity of their entire department? It is hard to imagine that Mann was the only person involved in manipulating the data at Penn State. What other faculty, and perhaps even grad students were part of the scheme?"
