Poor Corn Crop Will Have Major Impact on Ethanol Market
The Energy Collective ^ | July 17, 2012 | Robert Rapier

[Snip]...I have long felt that one of the biggest threats to the U.S. ethanol industry is a major drought/crop failure in the heart of corn country. This year we may be experiencing such an event. Recent reports indicate that what had been expected to be a record crop of corn has been downgraded such that only 40% of the corn crop is being classified as in good or excellent condition. This is down 48% versus last week and 69% versus a year ago.

The ethanol program is a joke to start with!

So now, instead of being hostages to the saudis,
we are hostages to the farm lobbyists.

I understand that the TN corn crop will make it. Yearly patterns is a bitch in the farming industry.

incorrect headline. it should be “government ethanol fetish to cause price of food to spike”.

and perhaps, “hunger threatens millions of poor families because the federal government thinks it should decide what kind of gas you should buy”.

Which is why the US should never depend on bio-fuels.

Ethanol plants here in Indiana are closing up faster than K-marts in the 1990s.

With Congress eliminating the subsidy for domestic and the tariff on imported ethanol earlier this year, I suspect Brazil will be hard to compete with.

So does the corn produced this year go for food or for ethanol? What will the Obamaverment decide?

Just to long as it doesn’t drive up the cost of booze.

I go to Pure stations. Non-ethanol gas. It screws up your car and boat motors anyways. Screw ethanol.

Instead of 13 billion bushels of corn, we may have only 9 or 10 billion bushels (same as produced in 2002/3), which surely must mean 30% of Americans are going to starve. Glad there won’t be any victims in Tennessee.

I’m not sure I understand your post. The crop is global. Hard times come and go. TN will lose 30% of maximum. It is still enough to pay the bills.

Great Leader Obama can erase the work requirement in our welfare benefits law and stop deportation of illegals so they can stay to vote (illegally) with a stroke of his mighty presidential pen.

Why can’t he similarly pen a note suspending the mandate to turn needed food corn into a third rate additive to gasoline and thus moderate the price rise of corn due to the drought?

Maybe closer to the election he will do it as we voters have such brief memories and need to be jacked up real close to the election for the act to influence us.

You have overlooked the most important fact....... there will still be more than adequate corn to make Jack Daniels and George Dickel

Shouldn’t there be a law against using all that food just for intoxication? Oh, wait... Nevermind.

Maybe this will be the end of burning enough corn in a fuel tank to feed someone for a year.

Apparently the EPA sets the ethanol requirement administratively so Obama could order the EPA to suspend or reduce it.

Which brings to mind the story of Stalin(?) plucking a chick and then showing people how happily it then cuddled in his palm for warmth...

( I think I’ve mixed that story up LOL! But do remember the point of it.)
