Boston Mayor to Outlaw Chick-Fil-A
Townhall.com ^ | July 22, 2012 | Kevin Glass

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino wants to restrict a single private business, Chick-Fil-A, from opening any franchises in Boston. His reported remarks were,

“Chick-fil-A doesn’t belong in Boston. You can’t have a business in the city of Boston that discriminates against a population. We’re an open city, we’re a city that’s at the forefront of inclusion.”

Chick-Fil-A has come under fire from progressive groups for donating millions of dollars to pro-family organizations over the past few years. This, according to Mayor Menino, counts as discrimination.

Meanwhile, the National Organization for Marriage is promoting "Eat at Chick-Fil-A Day" for Wednesday of this week.

Please join me this Wednesday in supporting this courageous company, while at the same time sending a powerful message of support to every individual and every company with the courage to stand for marriage.

Chick-Fil-A, for their part, put out a statement that read:

The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender. We will continue this tradition in the over 1,600 Restaurants run by independent Owner/Operators. Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.

Chick-fil-A is a family-owned and family-led company serving the communities in which it operates. From the day Truett Cathy started the company, he began applying biblically-based principles to managing his business. For example, we believe that closing on Sundays, operating debt-free and devoting a percentage of our profits back to our communities are what make us a stronger company and Chick-fil-A family.

Our mission is simple: to serve great food, provide genuine hospitality and have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.

And for this, Mayor Menino would ban the restaurant from Boston. Right now, there are only two Chick-Fil-A restaurants in Massachusetts: in Burlington, Mass. and Peabody, Mass. Northeastern University was considering a franchise for their student food court, but the students of Northeastern will have to go elsewhere for their chicken sandwich cravings for the foreseeable future.

What's more, these types of boycotts are incredibly silly. It's impossible to keep track of what company or CEO is donating money to or supporting a cause that you don't support. As was put succinctly by Jonathan Merritt at The Atlantic:

So should the 45 percent of Americans who oppose gay marriage opt for Chips Ahoy! instead of Oreos? Should they begin shopping at Belk instead of JC Penny? If they did, it wouldn't make any more sense than the endless failed calls for liberal consumers to boycott Urban Outfitters, because its owner is a conservative and Rick Santorum donor, or to not order from Domino's Pizza, because it was founded by a Catholic conservative who helped fund anti-abortion causes.

I don't eat meat or fowl, but I can support them by getting a 6-pack of these. Yummy, on the way.

Liberals don’t need any statute law to outlaw a private buisness. Because they are liberal, they can do whatever the h*** they want. Unless challenged, they will do what they want and get away with it. Doesn’t matter if there is any law in place on this issue. To liberals, being on the right side of history and all that claptrap is good enough to keep a private business out of a city.

LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I’ll bet that gerbil don’t like Mumbles favoritism for the ‘mos.

I wonder what the queers will do now that incandescent bulbs are getting harder to come by. I’ll venture a lot of them have a stash of them.

I’d hate to imagine what would happen if one of those Chinese-made CFL bulbs popped in the fudge chute, with all that nasty mercury and all.

Much support to Mr. Cathy. Will certainly go a chik-fil-a if I am near one.

Except for Catholics and other Christians, who will be forced to renounce their religious beliefs or forced out of the city.

there needs to be a list of businesses that support the liberal agenda. businesses that are homo friendly and promote/ endorse the destruction of marriage by pushing homo marriage

give me the list... and they WILL NOT receive another dime from me or my family

additionally, I would suggest such companies be held liable if any children are molested by same sex adults on their grounds (ie: schools)

The Chick Filet Board of Directors should just phase out - quite quickly all stores in Boston

From the article.

Right now, there are only two Chick-Fil-A restaurants in Massachusetts: in Burlington, Mass. and Peabody, Mass.

This is symbolic of everything that’s wrong with liberal-run states.

Truett Cathy vs barney frank.

One lives a Godly, upright, charitable life and is ostracized and criticized for having the nerve to express his beliefs.

The other is a plague on our entire country - and to voice disagreement with his policies, or his grotesque lifestyle in any way, is to be guilty of bigotry and hate!

How can anyone, in public office, legally make such a statement? You cannot ban free trade based upon what organizations they donate money to. What if some conservative politician were to say he wants the selling of Levi Strauss products banned in his area of influence because he doesn’t like their support of homosexuals?

On a side note.....This is a state where Romney was governor. Looks like he did squat to properly influence thinking in that state. One more reason NOT to support Romney in a general election.

I’m not sure if Chick-Fil-a is even interested in expanding into Boston. Their locator web site shows only 5 locations in the New England states and none of their 22 planned openings between now and September are there.

Well, the Eat at Chick-Fil-A Day promotion shows a poor sense of ecclesiastical grace: by picking Wednesday they cut down on the participation by Orthodox Christians, who are quite reliably supporters of traditional marriage. I suppose we can pop in for an order of waffle fries, but chicken is off the menu on Wednesdays for observant Orthodox Christians due to the weekly fast in commemoration of Our Lord’s unjust arrest.

I would observe that the mayor of Boston is courting a First (and Fourteenth) Amendment suit under the free-exercise clause.
