GOLIAD, Texas (AP) At least 11 people died Sunday and another 12 were injured after a pickup truck loaded with passengers left the highway and crashed into trees in rural South Texas, authorities said.
State troopers and Goliad County sheriff's investigators were investigating what prompted the single-vehicle crash and did not immediately know the names and ages of the victims. Gerald Bryant, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, told The Associated Press they were various ages and that he personally saw two young children among the dead at the scene.
"This is the most people I've seen in any passenger vehicle, and I've been an officer for 38 years," Bryant said, referring to the chaotic scene.
The white 2000 Ford F-250 pickup was heading north on U.S. 59 on Sunday evening when it traveled off the right side of the highway near the unincorporated community of Berclair in Goliad County and struck two large trees, Bryant said. The 23 people were loaded inside both the truck's cab and bed.

Somehow I doubt this was a redneck.
23 humans in one truck? Sounds like we got some trafficking going on down there....
23 people stuffed into one pickup. Naw, couldn't be illegals, right?
Outlaw pickup trucks.
Carrying the 23 people American F-150 owners refuse to carry.
This further demonstrates the need for sweeping gun control.
Probably just a church shuttle.....nothing illegal to see here....move along now.
ok I can just imagine people are going to pile on about how idiot it is to hav so many or any in the bed of a pickup truck, but I just watched “Machine Gun Preacher” and when people are desperate, as many are in this part of Texas, you “do what you have to do.”
In Machine Gun Preacher, Sam Childers is trying to save a bunch of kids from being conscripted and used by the LRA in Sudan, but doesn’t have enough space in the pickup, so he leaves a bunch of them for the return ride, but when he returns for them they are all dead.
Don’t you think if there were good alternatives the poor pawns in the Texas pickup would have chosen differently? This is a tragedy and we should pray that these folks’ situations improve.
Sounds like a naco cholo adventura gona malo.
Probably weren’t wearing seatbelts.
The obvious answer is to ban all motor vehicles. That would save 40,000 lives per year. Oh, and don’t forget bicycles. That would save another 700-800.
Let their situation improve south of the border. What part of illegal do you not understand?
Oh no I do understand the illegal part, and yes, the Mexicans need to develop their own country from the outlaw pit it is and improve the situation south of the border.
I definitely support legal immigration only and don’t support all this porous border, ignoring the illegal nonsense.
I am very upset with Mexico for allowing their own country to be so awful.
No doubt it’s a tragedy....tragedy is what happens when people skirt the law and rely on human merchants of doom. Short answer stay home and change the system that forces this on you. Mexico needs another revolution....the first one did not take!!!
Your "logic" works only if they were facing certain death if they didn't get into the bed of the pickup - otherwise it is just a completely asinine comment.
did not immediately know the names...
Things have changed in Texas.
ok, you are in a constructive mood this morning./sarc
I am just saying, if there were easy answers, don’t you think people would have turned to them?
Reminds me of a joke.
Why were there only 10,000 Mexicans at the Alamo?
They only hd one pick up truck.
Wah-Wah
did not immediately know the names and ages of the victims.
Translation: They haven't stolen IDs yet...
Border Patrol will assist with the investigation.
Shazamm!
Making up an excuse for that many people to be in a pickup truck driving down any road isn’t constructive - its silly.
Kenya used to use Datsun, Toyota & Peugeot small pickups as bush taxi’s. These “matatu’s” (the name means “30 cents” in Kiswahili) had a tall cover over the bed. I’ve ridden in them with 21 people in the bed, three standing on the rear bumper and four on the bench seat in the cab. 28 people! I have seen them with 35 people inside.
Those older Freepers remember piling 12 or more kids into a neighbors station wagon (remember those) to go to the lake, pool or beach on a summer day. Or a pickup bed, for that matter.
Safety is an individual choice. Some individuals accept greater risk than others. Even the nanny state cannot control all human behavior.
Our nanny state lets HIV positive folks roam freely, not even restricting employment in the food service industry.
“The EEOC’s guidelines on the employment of food service workers make clear that HIV is not a food-borne disease and that an employee’s or potential employee’s status as HIV-infected is not alone a sound basis on which to base hiring or employment assignment decisions. “

How many can related tales of disgruntled cooks or waiters spitting on a meal? Yet dental professionals often wear face shields to protect themselves from patient saliva.
The CDC says “Blood, saliva, and gingival fluid from ALL dental patients should be considered infective. “

As for me, I’d prefer pickup trucks full of people to having HIV patients fixing or serving my restaurant food. If I choose to ride in a pickup bed (or any vehicle) I can check out the driver’s mental & physical state of being. I cannot do that at a restaurant.
Best answer would have been an alarm on the theater back door.
Mexican birthday party?
Wrong thread.
The individuals charged with the protection of our borders and the value of our citizenship should be held accountable for deaths like this.
Who?
The gangsters that run Mexico (Calderon and his ilk, not the druggies). The Mexican Blancos export labor like the Hessian princes did soldiers......slave labor instead of slave soldiers.
On this side, our own ruling classes buy as many as the Mexicans can ship across.
Both the libs and conservative free traders love these poor faceless people who flee poverty only to be exploited up here for profit (the free traders) or power (the libs).
If illegal immigration threatened either profit or power....it would be stopped in 15 minutes.....but people dying like cattle in the desert crossings or in third world truck pile ups like this.....hey, whatayagonnado, got to have cheap lettuce and more mouths licking food stamps.
I have seen loads of partying teenagers, poor families of all colors with granny in the back, and Mexican workers all overloaded into a pickup truck. When you crash a pickup truck with lots of people in the back it will be ugly. I am not sure how they got this many people in one. You can’t really outlaw poverty or stupidity even though I am sure the Democrats will keep trying with various regulations.
I hope the truck is ok.
Was Antonio López de Santa Anna on board? Were they headed to the Alamo? This inquiring mind wants to know.
Well stated and I agree. And I’ll bet that you have some good stories about your work
>> if there were easy answers, dont you think people would have turned to them?
It seems that sneaking into our country illegally IS the “easy answer” to their problems that these folks (and many others) have chosen.
And therein lies a big part of the problem... it’s too easy, and too lucrative.
Unpossible! Dontcha know the border’s the most secure it’s been in over 10 years!!! /s
what a disgusting comment.
“Whiskey bottles and brand new cars
Oak tree, you’re in my way”
BEER RUN !
One or two... ;-)
This should never have happened. There are laws on how many people can be in a vehicle and riding in the bed. We need more control! sarcasm
These folks were on Obama’s “road to citizenship”.
If our boarder were closed - and if our immigration laws were enforced - and if our treasures weren’t handed out so freely, this event would have never happened. Those 12 people would not be dead, at least not on our soil.
Instead of two trees, they could have easily t killed a family of U.S. citizens who were traveling while on vacation.
Obama’s fault.
Those darn Amish!
hold my tequila and watch this!
Yeah, and now we get to pay for their medical bills.
Amazing the 'generic reporting'; albeit we get a hint below; that maybe an interpreter was necessary. . .(Not that we needed one.)
["It's unknown whether or not (the victims) were illegal, but it's possible," Bryant told the AP.]
No, Tony wasn't in the pickup and has long been pushing up daisies. How do I know? Funny you should ask. No lie and hand on Bible but great great gramps was one of the scouts who captured Santa Anna and brought him back to Sam Houston. Gramps wanted to shoot him the minute the guys ran up on him but the others wanted to take him back to camp to show him off.
If only he had a couple of more pick'em-up trucks at San Jacinto, this Tejas boolshiite woulda never happened.
Who was on guard duty that day? I bet it was that Nacho, asleep again! Oh well, so it takes a leetle longer. We get Tejas it back.
Of course they needed an interpreter. Very few Texans speak Norwegian, Viking bastards were obviously on a lutefisk run, wearing cheap disguises to cast blame on an innocent ethnic group. Again!
*Totally* agree.
Maybe if they had been stopped at the border by some deterrent, perhaps they’d be alive. I blame those who are opposed to sealing our borders.
