The man accused of going on a deadly shooting rampage at the opening of the new Batman movie appeared Monday in court for the first time.

James Holmes, 24, who is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 others inside a packed movie theater in Aurora, Colo., will be formally charged next Monday. He is being held without bond.

Holmes, who did not speak, sat in a maroon jailhouse jumpsuit as the judge advised him of the case. He appeared wide-eyed with bright reddish orange hair.

Holmes has been held in solitary confinement at an Arapahoe County detention facility since Friday. He is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder, and he could also face additional counts of aggravated assault and weapons violations.

Is he a lizard guy or what?

I’ve known more than a few of these types that didn’t have parents or community to steer them out of constant mayhem.

"Since he was "in the process of withdrawing" from the program, it seems like he was losing his grip on things at that point."

I'm not familiar with PhD programs, but if he had failed his orals, would they have given him the option of voluntarily withdrawing rather than being officially kicked out?

It sounds like there oral exams were part of the process of advancing in the program to degree candidacy, kind of like a qualifying exam would be in other programs. I have been in two of those, one in physics, the other engineering. In both cases, you had two opportunities to pass the exams.

If this guy failed that type of exam and hadn't tried again, my guess is the failure just pushed him over the edge and he was quitting on his own initiative. Since he was unable to get a job in the field with an undergraduate degree (which is usually the case in a scientific field) maybe he felt he was at a dead end in terms of his dreams, and just broke down. I don't know, I'm guessing, of course, but I have seen any number of people wash out of degree programs and get pretty despondent about it, although none went out and shot anybody, fortunately.

As we say out here, “If he was a horse, I wouldn’t walk behind him.”

[or “He’s got snakes.”]

They’re interchangeable.

Maybe he’s in shock because somebody finally told him he should’ve used green hair dye and he’s embarrassed to death.

Whatever.

Fry him.

Then he’ll be The Smoker.

There is a little bit of fear in there. I cant pinpoint it but I can see it. I dont think that all of this was in his master plan.

Damn details bite you in the ass every time!
