Sad. She graduated from CMU, where my father, sister and I went. My first nice car, my “ride,” I named “Sally” after her. Such an awesome woman.

She was gay? Wow. I can never remember it being mentioned when she was active in the space program, or after she retired.

Pancreatic cancer is usually fatal in a short period of time. By the time it's discovered, it's spread throughout the body.
17 months is one heck of a fight when it comes to pancreatic cancer. She was a brave soul, and obviously a real fighter. I hope she rests in peace.
She inspired our 3rd daughter to apply for astronaut training. Alas, there were 30,000+ applications for a hundred or so openings and our daughter does not have her PhD.
Never-the-less she helped build a laboratory module that is now on the Space Station. And she is currently a systems engineer on the Orion Capsule!

They may have just been business partners or more than that. You are the one with a problem.
That said, my daughter got to meet her at ASU at a special spend the day with her kind of thing. I think she was about 9.

She never made it an issue, never tried to advance the agenda, so it won’t make any difference to me whom she lived with.

A big part of astronauts' lives are serving as "ambassadors" or mentors for the younger generations. Just meeting someone like that can change a kid's trajectory.
I was lucky enough to have had a 5 minute conversation with Alan Shepard a few months after his moonwalk... it was like getting injected with some sort of drug designed to make me more interested in science.

There has been speculation diet pop with asparatame is an issue. Researchers are finding people who drank a lot of diet soda's are coming down with PC at higher levels.
I was in a band in the late 80’s to mid 90’s that used to play that ( a bar band staple ) . Whenever we played in the Clear Lake area (NASA hdq., the audience would sing just a bit louder. Good stuff.
Surprising to me...when you hold someone up on a pedestal then rear this it kinda takes some of the shine off...

It doesn’t detract in any way from her achievements, even if true. She is fully deserving of being admired and on a pedestal. She was a pioneer and very brave. A role model.

It’s funny how people on these thread wish that gays would shut up about their lives, but none of us ever remember Sally mentioning it about herself and now some idiot decides to bring it up.

Kids today will probably not even learn about it. Too much “American exceptional-ism”, “non-sustainable pollution” or some other claptrap. But hey, at least they'll still have jobs in NASA’s Muslim outreach program...
The only good thing that Obama has done is stop funding taxpayer money to NASA.....Definitely not in the constitution!!!!

One early study suggested that an increased rate of brain tumors in the US during the 1980s might have been related to aspartame use. However, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the increase in brain tumor rates actually began back in the early 1970s, well before aspartame was in use. And most of the increase was seen in people age 70 and older, a group that was not exposed to the highest doses of aspartame, which might also make this link less likely. Other studies have not found an increase in brain tumors related to aspartame use.
In the largest study of this issue, researchers from the NCI looked at cancer rates in more than 500,000 older adults. The study found that, compared to people who did not drink aspartame-containing beverages, those who did drink them did not have an increased risk of lymphomas, leukemias, or brain tumors.
