Washington - Republican Mitt Romneys approach to foreign policy will come under scrutiny as he undertakes his first visit abroad as President Barack Obamas challenger in the November election.
Romney begins on Wednesday a six-day swing through Britain, Israel and Poland, nations which are being described as key US allies.
His aides, however, sought to lower expectations, terming the visit a learning opportunity for Romney and letting it be known that the trip is not meant to define his foreign policy.
But some specifics on Romneys foreign policy approach are expected to be outlined during a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Reno, Nevada on the eve of the overseas trip.
Indicating this course, Romneys policy director Lanhee Chen told reporters: He is really abroad to learn and to listen. There will be other opportunities for the governor to articulate additional policy prescriptions and foreign policy.
Given the series of challenges that the world faces today, it would be an opportunity for Romney to visit three nations with each of whom the US has a strong and important relationship, Chen said.
The trip would serve as a chance for Romney to demonstrate a clear a resolute stand with nations that share our values and possess the fortitude to defend those values in the name of a more peaceful world, said the aide. In London, his first stop, Romney will meet with the top leadership, including British Prime Minister David Cameron, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Opposition leader Ed Miliband. He will also meet with Foreign Secretary William Hague and former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Romney, who ran the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002, will be attending the opening ceremony of the London Olympics with his wife, Ann, who will remain at the games to watch her dressage horse compete. Romney is also set to attend several fundraisers while in London. He will then fly to Israel, where he is expected to deliver a major address in Jerusalem.
Aides said the speech will project Romneys strong view that America needs to stand by its allies, particularly allies that are under siege like Israel, particularly democratic allies who have such a shared history and shared values with America.
Romney will meet with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He is also set to meet Palestinian PM Salam Fayyad. He will also visit key monuments. In Poland, Romney will confer with ex-Polish President Lech Walesa in Gdansk before moving to Warsaw for meetings with President Bronislaw Komoroswki and other leaders.

Three countries that The Kenyan has deliberately slighted.
Romney seems to have a plan.
John Kerry said he had a plan.
But then again why is Romney visiting countries that don’t like Obama anyway?
Perhaps to show there will be a difference between his foreign policy and Obama’s.
