Drug dog finds nothing in car at traffic stop, but sniffs out pot [& illegal alien] at nearby house

Authorities arrested the suspects late Thursday after finding 25 bales of marijuana, weighing more than 430 pounds, inside a shed at an Ajo home. Ajo is about 100 miles west of Tucson.

The discovery came after a deputy made a traffic stop in front of the home. The deputy smelled marijuana in the car, reportedly driven by Womack, and called for additional deputies and a drug-sniffing dog.

The dog did not smell drugs in the car but alerted deputies to the fence line of a nearby house.

Deputies eventually searched a shed at the home and found the marijuana, along with an illegal immigrant identified as Lopez-Zavala.

Will this stand up in court? It sounds like an illegal search.

The drug war is for the express purpose of feeding the government.

Drugs are a problem, has always been a problem, and always will be a problem.

But the drug war makes it a bigger problem than it would be otherwise.

STOP THE STUPID DRUG WAR.

"Drug sniffing" dogs are just a way to manufacture probable cause when none exists.

Don’t worry, they took the dog to a judge to testify under oath, and got a warrant.

Indeed. I thought only liberals supported utopian feel-good policies that they judged by intentions rather than results.

A drug sniffing dog hitting on a scent of MJ is considered probable cause to conduct a search

Drug War has to end. We’ve lost too many freedoms due to it.

430 LBS! For that much dope they don’t need a dog. The cops should have been able to smell that themselves

Okay, thanks for the clarification.

I’m not disputing what you say, but I agree with other posters that this aspect of the drug war needs to end. If those 430 pounds had gotten out to the American public, the only effect would have been that a few people would get high and have cravings for Doritos. Hardly a national crisis. Admittedly, I find potheads to be profoundly boring types as a general rule, but that’s not a national crisis either.

Not only is it probable cause, If the LEO WANTS to search, they will say that the dog “indicated” that there was something. Telepathically of coarse. If stopped and you refuse to allow a search without a warrant, They will call in one of those dogs with the telepathic training. Heck, they may even use the Yorkie that was crapping in the yard where you were pulled over! What I want to know is, why isn’t a dog “search” a search without a warrant?

If you want liberals to take the war on drugs seriously, tell them that polls show pot heads with the munchies crave Chik-Fil-A.

They probably did search the illegal..

However, the dog “hitting” on the smell is enough to search with out a warrant.

That is why they train the dogs to “hit” on nothing so they can get around that pesky warrant thing.

A drug dog searching for Michael Jackson? I thought he was dead!

Yeah, sure, un huh, we want to legalize drugs and let the cartels fighting over turf, and running free in the US so we can have MORE zoned out zombies escaping reality in altered states of mind while munching on Doritos. PERFECT!
