Outing Sally Ride: Her sexual orientation has nothing to do with space ships
yahoo ^ | 7/24/12 | Virginia Heffernan

Maybe the idea of gays in space is just so exciting that it has overwhelmed Sally Ride's eulogists, who really should be parsing her achievements in astrophysics, accident investigations and middle-school education, rather than trying to make hay out of her mellow lesbian romantic life.

I did not know he was lesbian. I guess she was pretty secretive about it. I applaud her accomplishments, in any event.

I believe the first woman in space was a Russian cosmonaut, many years prior to Ride. Her sexual orientation is unknown.

All liberals are interested in is gays. I’m beginning to think that those liberals who say they are straight....aren’t.

Turn ons for libs, sex, gay sex, transgender sex, lesbians, bi-sexual sex, condoms, contraception, abortion.
They can’t accept the fact that maybe just being a human being is enough. They have to stick their noses in your sexlife to make themselves happy.

Now I am indeed confused. You think our government, under President Reagan, placed a lesbian in a position to be idolized by our daughters by sending her in to space? You really, really believe that? Or could it be that, at the time, no one had a clue? I had no idea she was a lesbian until I read what you posted, and I was alive in 1983.

She was private about her private life. I wish the rest were too. Leave her memory in peace.

+1. Her orientation had nothing to do with her accomplishments and it doesn't sound as if she used it as some sort of stepping stone (unlike E Warren and her "Native American heritage", e.g.). She was a role model for my daughters back in the day - Stanford PhD, astronaut, etc. May her memory be for a blessing.

” I think the majority of Americans are tired of the hype and the derision. No body cares anymore, they just don’t like it thrown in their faces time and time again. “

Exactly .

Explains why she died so early at 61.

The life expectancy for women in the US is 78. Even longer for folks who are in the physical condition that astronauts maintain.

The fact most of the public didn’t know makes it fairly obvious she kept her life a private matter. I care very little about how people live their private lives so long as they’re not victimizing others or slamming it in my face.

I neither knew nor cared. It was her choice, and she didn’t make it an issue for everyone else.

I wish more folks who make that choice would act the same.

May she rest in peace, and may her family and loved ones grieve fully and find their own peace.

Explains why she died so early at 61.

Pancreatic cancer explains why she died so early at 61.

Actually, homosexuality is based on fear of the opposite sex.

You are correct. It was a cosmmonaut woman who was first. Let me rephrase, said cosmonaut was the first to return to earth. A prior soviet woman burned up on re-entry. Her initial distress calls were reputed to be heard by two Italian ham operators.

Didn’t matter at all. Just heard about it with these reports the last couple days. I always regarded her as wonderfully accomplished in a way the Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton can’t match.

You want to explain how being a lesbian causes pancreatic cancer? Steve Jobs died of pancreatic cancer at age 56. Was he a lesbian too?

Just... shut up.
