Man admits he set fires on the USS Miami to leave work early

A civilian working aboard a nuclear submarine drydocked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine admits to starting two fires causing $400 million in damage.

Maybe he should have just called in sick?

A man who set two fires to a nuclear-powered submarine, causing $400 million in damage, admitted he did it because he wanted to leave work early.

Casey James Fury, 24, was working aboard the USS Miami in Kittery, Maine as a civilian painter and sandblaster when he purposefully set two fires this summer, according to a criminal complaint filed in the United States District Court in Maine.

Fury, who initially denied involvement in either incident, finally told investigators he was responsible for both fires after submitting to a polygraph test, and blamed his anxiety and a conversation with his ex-girlfriend for making him snap.

The first fire was set on May 23 around 5:30 p.m. while the submarine was in dry dock at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The blaze raged for 12 hours until firefighters were able to put it out, and the Navy estimated it caused $400 million dollars in damage.

Less than a month later, on June 16, another fire started in the dry dock crade of the submarine. This time the flames were quickly extinguished and “little or no damage” was caused, according to the complaint.

Fury gave two sworn statements that he had simply been a witness to both fires, but when interviewed by investigators again on July 18, he admitted having set the June 16 fire.

This guy was nearly able to destroy one of our LA class attack boats.

The nature of the shipyard makes for an environment where rags pile up and brown butcher paper is used as a ubiquitous covering for a variety of things. Then there is the insulation that covers the entire inside of the hull. Stage an adrift can of glue, solvent or paint here and there and it's a recipe for diaster.

The $400M in damage respresents the life's work of many people. In my eyes, it's the same as murder. Mass murder.

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard located in Kittery on the southern boundary of Maine near the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It is a bit confusing.

well, I stand corrected.

In all the years I lived in Maine I never heard of the Portsmouth yard called Maine and all the New Hampshire folks I knew referred to it as being in New Hampshire.

And do not for a minute think that his actions have not been noticed and are being studied and analyzed around the world.

I hope he gets at least 10 years for his efforts. Madoff bilked his clients of $18b and got 150 years.

It is possible for him to face life in prison. According to the Criminal Complaint published by the NCIS, he did all this for some ex-girlfriend he was texting. He starting developing some un-controllable anxiety while standing the safety watch and didnt like her responses. Apparently she started seeing some other guy, and he was trying to convince her that he was more than a friend. He wanted to get out of work. Since he was a unionized tradesman he wanted to still get paid, so I guess one way to do it, is if there was no actual work in the yard. With his twisted logic, a fire would accoplish this. He actually did it twice. He might of got away with the USS MIAMI fire if he didn’t start the second one.
