Most U.S. gun owners - even current and former members of the National Rifle Association - support some firearms ownership restrictions including criminal background checks for prospective gun buyers, according to a poll commissioned by an anti-gun lobbying group.
The survey, conducted by Republican pollster Frank Luntz for the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, was carried out in May but was released on Tuesday in the aftermath of the Colorado movie theater shooting that killed 12 people last week.

Luntz said he polled 945 gun owners nationwide - half of whom were gun owners who were current or former members of the NRA, a gun rights group that takes a hard line against most firearms control measures, and half of whom were not affiliated with the NRA.
The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. The survey did not provide results looking only at the responses by current NRA members.
Seventy-four percent of the current and former NRA members and 87 percent of the other gun owners supported criminal background checks of anyone purchasing a gun, according to the poll.
Seventy-nine percent of current and former NRA members and 80 percent of the other gun owners supported requiring gun retailers to perform background checks on all employees to ensure they are not felons, the poll found.
Poll respondents also favored eligibility requirements for obtaining concealed weapon permits, with 63 percent of current and former NRA members and 74 percent of the other gun owners agreeing that applicants must be at least 21 years old.

I call BS on Frank Luntz’s poll.
>> ... survey, conducted... for the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns
No way could that possibly be an agenda-driven push poll.
Yep, you’re always going to have a few weak-knee’d among us.
Well it sounds just by browsing over the questions asked that gun owners believe in enforcing the existing laws on the books, which is also the NRA position if I’m not mistaken. It doesn’t appear that they were asked about any new gun laws or I would imagine they would have gotten a very different result.
Have you noticed that in the last few day some there were some missed opportunities for talkers such as Sean Hannity to get off the gun control issue and move to foreign policy and Obama’s failures. Obama’s foreign policy failures was the issue that followed last week’s massacre story.
I would imagine Sean Hannity probably has an on the air debate lined up between Karl Rove and some democrat where they can debate gun control.
Yup. And small businesmen back higher taxes on small business, by a significant percentage. Right Mr. Luntz?
“I call BS on Frank Luntzs poll.”
DITTO!
Pardon my French... BULLSHIT frank... you rat bastard. BTW... they already run background checks jerk.
LLS
Wrong.
This is standard stuff which most responsible gun owners and enthusiasts believe in. There are no questions on restrictions or the like. If there was you would see some real high negatives for those things with this group that was sampled.
Most of the questions were not really addressing anything which would change from current law.
I guess the background check one might be relevant to private transfers, but that’s about it. Also possibly the terrorist watch list business.
However it’s not like respondents advocated banning categories of firearms, implementing waiting lists, or registration. Those last items are what are still the hot buttons of the grabbers.
The BATFE needs some serious restrictions.
As usual the words “shall not be infringed” get lost in the poll results.
All gun laws are unconstitutional........so say the Founding Fathers.
POLLS DO NOT CONTROL MY 2nd AMENDMENT RIGHTS!
Then let’s have background checks for all voters when they register.
” I call BS on Frank Luntzs poll.”
I second your BS, and raise it.
Oh yeah, he probably thinks the people standing in line to get licenses and guns are probably waiting to turn their other weapons in to the gubment.
Having seen this guy up close I call BS (blue sky). He is going around saying that Obama going to win. His little dial a shtick has grown old and it is time for the troll to climb back into his hole.
Frankly, I am tired of every gypsy that comes out trying to hock their wares from books, to polls, to opinions. The only one that matters will be in November.
