McDonnell appears on VP shortlist
The Washington Times ^ | July 26, 2012 | Ralph Z. Hallow

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has emerged as one of three Republican officeholders who political handicappers say have the most potential to unify the party and boost the fortunes of GOP standard-bearer Mitt Romney as a running mate in November.

While Mr. Romney has revealed little about his vice-presidential search, Mr. McDonnell, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio are widely seen as reliable economic and social conservatives at a time when the party faces the possibility of factional divisions heading into next month’s convention in Tampa, Fla.

The Virginia governor, experienced analysts note, is a staunchly pro-life Catholic with a fiscally conservative reputation and no known opposition among evangelicals, whose votes have been vital to GOP electoral success and many of whom are skeptical about Mr. Romney’s Mormon religion.

The Virginia governor is considered a competent, and at times engaging, speaker not likely to upstage Mr. Romney — unlike, say, more charismatic figures such as Mr. Rubio or New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

“Is that you Rahm Emmanuel? If they don’t agree with you, they shouldn’t have freedom of speech? Is that you Thomas Menino?”

No, this is a REAL Conservative that is currently a resident of Missouri. This November, I’m focusing on getting rid of McCaskil and getting Hartzler reelected. I will NOT be sucked into ABO sophistry and support Romney in this election. Of course, I will not support Obama either. I will vote third party - a third party vote is NOT a vote for Obama - a vote is a vote. A vote for Romney is just a vote to keep the rule of the GOP Establishment over real conservatives. It is a vote to ever get a Ronald Reagan in office again.

By working hard to increase conservative members of House and Senate in 2012 and more in 2014, will CAN AND WILL put Obama in check. IF Romney gets in office he will lurch left just as he did in Mass. He WILL hurt the chances of conservatism and cause the GOP to lose seats in 2014 and then get another liberal Dem elected in 2016. No, Romney is NOT the answer. Controling the House and Senate is. Then we can get a real conservative elected as POTUS in 2016.

Interesting...prefer him over Rubio-Jeb Bush’s pick. Does anyone know his stance on the immigration issue....a Jeff Sessions...possibly?

Mitt is doing his level best to lose the election. Time to remove him from the race BEFORE the convention.

And the point was about some doufous who claimed he was a Conservative before March this year and then he chose to do Romney's bidding.

I"m sorry, that just writes you out of Conservatism so fast you wouldn't believe it.

Now, were you a Mittbot before Virginia's March primary?

Again with the childish insults? Apparently you and those FReepers who share your views on Romney presume you are demonstrating political sophistication and unassailable integrity by bashing him and calling into question the conservatism of any FReeper that doesn't agree with you. How convenient. That approach of using inferred aspersions on someone else's political integrity is the same type of ploy lefties use all day long to attack those of us on the right, only they infer we are 'racist' or just plain stupid.

Here, on a political website I've been an active part of (6,000 + posts) for over 12 years, my conservative Bona fides and integrity are questioned by smug, self-appointed arbiters of what defines a political conservative who have decreed that to support the putative Republican nominee for president - Mitt Romney - the only real alternative to the Kenyan Marxist, Obama - is tantamount to abandoning conservative principles. I consider that kind of self-serving presumption absurd and I reject it. You can post all the insults you want from this point on because to me, your opinions are no longer relevant and simply the rantings of a person who simply can't face political reality and thinks he hides it by claiming he's the better conservative for doing so. Enough of this. Good day.

They are underwater bridges across a major seaport, do you think they should be free? I live on the Southwest side of the state and I don’t want to pay for Va Beach and NOVA growth problems. You guys keep building houses further and further out and wonder why you have traffic problems.

We just had one of those enormous earthquakes so we will keep building 1 and 2 story dwellings. It seems prudent. Really.

Jim Scott - If you don’t like the direction of FR then maybe you should stop posting. Your “pragmatic support” of Romney just doesn’t wash anymore.

No, I don't like the 'direction of FR' when posters like you swarm all over any FReeper that dares to post a good word about Romney, as if he were the enemy instead of the Marxist Obama. I find that to be absurd in such a crucial election.

As for Jim Robinson, I respect and admire him but on Romney, we happen to disagree. If Mr. Robinson chooses to re-make FR into an anti-Romney forum then that is his privilege as the site owner and administrator. At that point, I'll likely abandon FR - but not before. I enjoy having a quality conservative site to read and post on.

In the meantime, I'll post as I chose and ignore the Romney-haters. This election is too important to throw away because the GOP candidate isn't Sarah Palin, a woman I greatly admire and would vote for in a heartbeat should she be able to oust Romney at the convention next month (doubtful).

However, it's very clear that no amount of rational argument will stay FReepers like you from not only bashing Mitt Romney at every opportunity but denigrating longtime FReepers who happen to think that 'Anybody But Obama' is preferable to another four years of a dangerous Marxist in the Oval Office. No, lots more fun to call Romney names and post snarky replies to anyone who dares to disagree with you and support Romney, albeit relucently. Not good enough! We must all hate and despise Mitt Romney!

Sorry, but I won't play that game with you...and I'll definitely continue posting on FR. One hopes that after the election, when Romney defeats Obama, the current levels of animosity will abate but that remains to be seen. Even so, FR is too good to abandon to those who would rather see Obama stay in office than for Mitt Romney to defeat him.

I find it incredibly arrogant for you to think that because you have posted for 12 years you are “conservative.” Muawiyah has been on this site longer than you....doesn’t that make him more conservative? You are being absurd.

Also, this is NOT just a political website....it is a privately owned website. You and I are guests here. We do not own this website and cannot dictate what does or doesn’t belong here. Only the owner, who is Jim Robinson, can do this. I always attempt to follow what Jim Robinson has said in regards to what is acceptable at this “privately owned” website. When I have stepped outside those boundries, I have been rebuked.

The attitude of Jim Robinson is that he WILL NOT vote for Romney because he is pro-abortion, pro-homosexual, a gun grabber, and pro-big government statist. He has been forebearant towards those that are going to vote for Romney because they fear Obama. He “declared a truce.” However, when one starts saying positive things about Romney vice merely saying they fear Obama....they are violating the truce. This is not remotely supposed to be a pro-Romney website. Romney is part of the GOP establishment that impedes a real conservative from being the standard bearer for the GOP. Also, it has become the home of those of us that hate the leftward drift of the party caused by the GOPe and their minions like Romney.

IF you cannot deal with the fact that this is the place for real conservatives to bash Romney and the GOPe that spawned him. Maybe you should consider this is no longer where you belong. Of course, bashing Obama is always welcome! :-)

But really, the site owner has taken a “no Romney” position. The vast majority of the forum, except for some dinosaurs that cannot adapt, has moved with him. We will no longer vote for non-conservatives that the GOPe foists on us. We are not mere puppets.

We are for establishing conservative control at House and Senate level and down at this time. We are not wasting effort to put in a defective GOPe waste of air. You pragmatically say he is the only choice, but you are sadly mistaken. By chosing to support him, you are just telling the GOPe that what you value doesn’t matter. I fully understand your fear and distaste for Obama...I probably loath him more than you, but I will not stoop to replacing one evil (Obama) with another evil (Romney). The “lesser of two evils” rationelle has its limits. For many of us, to include Jim Robinson who I remind you again owns this website, there is no “lesser” in this case.

So, I suggest you tell Jim Robinson he is wrong IF you cannot deal with the direction of this website. Jim Robinson is having no problems getting persons that agree with his position to support the funding of this place.

And we don’t need persons like yourself that will blindly vote GOP regardless of the candidate. Romney = Obama = No Change. You “party faithfuls” are passe here now.

“Not good enough! We must all hate and despise Mitt Romney!”

Exactly. You can be ABO, but not pro-Romney. IF you cannot understand why Romney should be despised, then you are NOT conservative...no matter how much you claim to be. You are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

A real Conservative does not suggest someone stop posting if they don’t like the direction this forum is going. A real Conservative appreciates the First Amendment. Your post to Jim Scott sounded a lot like Rahm Emmanuel suggesting that Chick-Fil-A avoid Chicago because he doesn’t like their values. If that’s what real Conservative’s do, then the meaning has changed very drastically.

Debate Mr. Scott on the merits of his argument, but never suggest that someone stop posting and move on...that’s DU territory, that’s Rahm Emmanuel.

I wouldn’t vote for that gun grabbing scumbag Romney if he were the last “Republican” on earth. If that abortionist/homosexualist big government pushing statist bastard is the best the Republican party has to offer, then the hell with them!!

My opinion of McDonnell is that if he’d actually stuck to his guns on privatizing the State ABC stores, and maybe picked a couple of other things to privatize (say, state parks) then he would have set the stage for a national platform for himself.

Afterall, at the federal level, assets will need to be sold and functions privatized to a high degree if we are ever going to have a prayer of denting our national debt. He didn’t care enough to get it done.

He has done little of note as Governor, more status quo than anything. His lack of zeal for challenging the status quo makes me think he’d be at best a “ho-hum” pick, though I must say the lack of personal charisma amongst the two would have humor value as a spectator.

I think he could do better - say Ryan or some other more high profile pick that appears to be willing to challenge established bureaucracy and spending.
