Campus Reform has compiled a list of the top ten most shocking courses being offered on college campuses. Here they are:

“Cyborgs, Avatars, and Feminists: Gender in the Virtual World” at the University of New Hampshire (Women’s Studies): Utilizing feminist theoretical and critical investigations of gender and techno culture, students explore women's popular and theoretical conceptions of cyberspace. Students explore numerous digital communication systems within cyberspace and examine how and why a diversity of women utilize these systems. This course provides students with the opportunity to investigate the impact that advancements in virtual technology have in the lives of women.

“Psychology of Lesbian Experience” at the University of California Los Angeles (LGBT Studies): Review of research and theory in psychology and women’s studies to examine various aspects of lesbian experience, impact of heterosexism/stigma, gender role socialization, minority status of women and lesbians, identity development within a multicultural society, changes in psychological theories about lesbians in sociohistorical context.

“Theologies of Abortion” at Oberlin College (Religion Department): This seminar explores a spectrum of theological approaches on abortion from Roe v. Wade to today. Topics to be studied include: the role of extremist religious groups in abortion clinic violence; how Protestant and Catholic pro-life theologies clash over issues of sex and gendered sexuality; debates about the question of when life begins and “fetal personhood”; how race shapes pro-choice and pro-life positions in relation to the bodies of religious women of color.

“students explore women’s popular and theoretical conceptions of cyberspace”

Given the audience, shouldn’t that be “contraceptions of cyberspace”?

Can’t understand WHY employers won’t hire graduates...

"And they’re pissed that they can’t find jobs." Kathleen Sibelius and Janet Napolitano have pretty good jobs, but I hope they're in the unemployment line after November.

Examples like these are why I’m glad I didn’t spent 2-4 years at a college.

If I want anything dealing with music, I’ll go with beginner’s music theory if they have an emphasis on not performing, because I’m about as far from a guitar virtuoso as you can get.

Other than that though, what the heck kind of real-world applications would any of these classes have? Then again, you can’t indoctrinate if that seed of doubt has been planted beforehand.

Depends on what you consider to be a pretty good job. There’s the opinion of do nothing and get paid a lot, and there’s the opinion of having the controls of government in your lap and the unfettered opportunity to destroy the country without Congress saying no, and that would be considered a terrible job. Or rather, doing a terrible job.

I noticed my own typo.

Too bad Firefox can’t recognize syntax errors.

“what the heck kind of real-world applications would any of these classes have?”

Professional “advocate” for the perpetually “offended”.

The only one that doesn’t belong is the “maple syrup” one. What’s wrong with that? In a country of 300 million, we probably need a few thousand people gathering and processing the stuff to supply all our breakfast needs. So if one college is teaching one class on it, that seems about right.

Maple syrup and dogs are the only two worth a damn
and from which a person could actually learn something
worth while to use in real life.

I thought the same. What’s wrong with a course on the history of human interactions with dogs, bolstered with a bit of science? And, why not a course on maple syrup? There are courses on all sorts of food products offered at colleges of agriculture all over the U.S.
