Russia is talking to Cuba about housing Russian navy ships, the nation's navy chief said Friday, in a move seen as an attempt to challenge Washington.

Russia is also talking to Vietnam and the Indian Ocean island country of Seychelles as possible naval hubs.

Relations with Washington have deteriorated since President Vladimir Putin was re-elected to a third term in March largely in part to the violence in Syria.

Vice Admiral Viktor Chirkov told the state RIA Novosti news agency that Russia is in talks about setting up maintenance and supply facilities for Russian ships in those countries but wouldn't give any further details.

The announcement comes on the heels of the U.S. government's attempt to reaffirm its willingness to "forge a new relationship" with Cuba on Thursday - as long as the country promises to end its' oppressive regime.

Maybe the US should be looking to build a naval base in the country of Georgia, or Finland, or one of the Baltic countries?

This is bad, means Obama will have stronger allies only 90 miles away from our mainland.

Why not Venezuela? I think its a bad idea because the present government is doomed and will be replaced by a democracy of some sort. Set up a Naval Base in Haiti? Or Bolivia? Or maybe on the coast of Mexico.

Russia figures Venezuela will change governments and the new government will cut off Cuba at the knees. Russia’s thinking is it can replace Venezuela and kick US in the balls at the same time. It could get ugly but I’m betting on the Cuban people to come out on top after a very bloody revolt.

Cuba is too close to the US. That base would be toast if a real world conflict were to happen. Heck, the US is moving assets OUT of Okinawa to get them out of intermediate range of Chinese ballistic missiles.

Venezuala, that I could see.

“Obama will welcome it”

Not only will obama welcome it, he may even offer them Gitmo with the understanding that the prisoners there will be promptly released in their home countries.
