SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL

Friday, July 27, 8 PM Pacific (11 PM Eastern)

Broadcast live at 98.1/KING-FM/Seattle

Click on this link to listen.

Mozart: Quartet for Oboe and Strings in F, K. 370
Nathan Hughes, oboe
Amy Schwartz Moretti, violin
Che-Yen Chen, viola
Julie Albers, cello

Mozart had a lifelong love affair with the oboe, to include a wonderful concerto for that instrument. This little chamber work is beautiful and a lot of fun.

Mendelssohn: Sonata for Cello and Piano in B-flat, Op. 45
Andres Diaz, cello
Anton Nel, piano

This is a pleasant piece and worth a listen.

Andres Diaz is the head honcho at the Curtis School of Music in Philadelphia. Anton Nel teaches at the University of Texas at Austin, and I love talking piano with him.

Schulhoff: Duo for Violin and Cello
Emily Daggett Smith, violin
Robert deMaine, cello

Erwin Schulhoff had one of those unlucky lives. First the Nazis put him in a concentration camp, and then after the war the Soviets put him in the gulag. Bad karma. I’m not a fan of this composer.

Bartok: “Contrasts” for Clarinet, Violin and Piano, Sz. 111
Ricardo Morales, clarinet
James Ehnes, violin
Andrew Armstrong, piano

Bela Bartok wrote this piece for Benny Goodman, and he was the first to perform it. This should be interesting.

I've never watched the Olympics. In fact I'm not much of a sports fan. It doesn't appeal to me. More fun here.

I'll be bailing early to listen to the concert.

I don't have anything planned for tonight. Next Friday I'll be in bed early due to a Freedom Works training session Saturday morning for our local Tea Party. I have to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for that. I'm the technical person who has to use MS/Access to massage our data for the "Get Out the Vote" effort.

I'm not sure what to do next. I've done the British pop songwriters of the late Sixties. I've done the Brill Building composers in detail. I even did a four week retrospective of Brahms. Everything began with the letter "B".

Ms. Behavin suggested I try the letter "C", and she suggested Chopin. That might not be a bad idea. He wrote mostly short piano pieces, so it's not a drain on the attention span.

I have to give the next project some thought.

Walt Disney's "Fantasia" inspired Italian animator Bruno Bartoletti to try a similar idea of his own in the mid-Seventies. This number from "Allegro non troppo" is the best known. It is about a cat coming home to an abandoned house and remembering what it was like in happier days. But is the cat really there in the first place?

Cat lovers will need a box of tissues for this one.

John Sibelius; "Sad Waltz"

Yep...all moved in.

I got a dilly of a bike burn years ago, on my leg. I was riding from Virginia Beach to Boston, and hitting all the Civil War Battlefields on the way. By the time I got to Gettysburg, the burn had become badly infected and was sending red lines up my leg. SO...I had to go to an emergency room. I could not bear to have my infected leg inspected in Gettysburg...remembering the Matthew Brady pictures of the mountains of amputated limbs, so I rode a little further to the ER in York PA. I figured since the Harley factory is located in that city, the doctors would instantly recognize and be able to treat a motorcycle pipe burn! They saved my leg. LOL. Seriously. true Story.

From Mars?

July 28, 2012

Microbes from Mars fell on the very early Earth . . . , and the offspring of those microbes are still here—and they are us.” That’s how one astronomer speculated about how life originated on Mars and then came to Earth.

Some men and women of science are looking to outer space for the origins of life on earth, not believing the Bible’s explanation that God placed mankind, animals, and plant life on earth through special creation. But how did that supposed microbial life start on a hostile planet? The bigger question is this: Why is it so difficult to accept that the earth, uniquely and singularly fitted for life to exist, is where God created and placed living creatures?

As humans struggle to accept a miraculous beginning of life from the breath of God (Gen. 2:7), they choose to trust a miracle of a far different sort—the miracle of life originating from no first cause at all. Perhaps they could follow the advice Job received: “Listen to this, O Job; stand still and consider the wondrous works of God” (Job 37:14). And maybe they should try to answer God’s question: “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?” (38:4).

Praise God for creating such a wonderful place for us to live! We stand in awe of His marvelous creation.

Dear Heavenly Father, what an awesome and powerful
God You are! You created life by Your very breath.
We praise You and stand in awe of You.
Thank You for Your creation.
Only God could create the cosmos out of nothing

Read: Job 38:4-18

So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves . . . . Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image.” —Genesis 1:21,26
