Protest targets WA Chick-Fil-A truck in gay marriage row

WASHINGTON — Protesters targeted a Chick-fil-A food truck in Washington on Thursday after the fast-food chain's president came out candidly against same-sex marriage.

"Ho-ho, hey-hey, Chick-fil-A is anti-gay," chanted a young crowd of around 20 demonstrators, with no apparent impact on the steady flow of patrons picking up chicken sandwiches and nuggets under the hot midday sun.

Mainly present in the southern United States, but expanding into other parts of the country, Chick-fil-A is as famous for its Christian values -- it never opens on Sundays -- as it is for its menu.

But company president Dan Cathy angered gay rights groups and their allies when he criticized marriage equality, saying last week that Americans are "inviting God's judgment" by accepting the idea that two people of the same sex can wed.

Elected officials in Boston and Chicago have gone so far as to tell Chick-fil-A to stay out of their towns, while the Jim Henson Company said it would no longer supply its popular puppet toys to the family-owned chain.

Dan Rafter of the Human Rights Campaign, which organized the Washington protest, told AFP that Chick-fil-A has a "long history" of funding groups that oppose greater rights for gays and lesbians.

“These radicals need to be fought politically. The owner of chick fil A merely mentioned his religious beliefs and his personal support of traditional marriage. I say if you no longer are safe to say that in America, then MY human rights are being violated and I demand it be stopped.”

I agree 100%. Time to stop capitulating; it hasn’t worked and they keep upping the ante.

Just to be clear what happened here:

Did Dan Cathy say gays should be banned from his restaurants?

Did Dan Cathy say that people who disagree with him on the subject of gay marriage should be banned from his restaurants?

Did Dan Cathy do anything other than voice his own opinion on the subject of gay marriage?

The questions answer themselves. The "protestors" and their nationwide network of shit-for-brains sympathizers are only interested in one thing: stifling all opinion that they disagree with.

“There was a time when common sense wasn’t illegal in this country.”

Right, and the more tolerant we became the more belligerant they have become. Time to change course.

HOMOSEXUAL. Because there’s nothing “gay” about it.

I see four protestors in the ultra close-up photo that accompanies the article. The writer says "around twenty" protestors were there, but don't we think if there were even twenty there, the photo would show that?

They organized a protest and hardly anyone showed up. That is the only news here.

Since all these idiot mayors have had to back down from their previous public pronouncements, now would be a great time for C-F-A to begin the building process in those cities. Just imagine the public scrutiny if C-F-A were denied a permit on some frivolous grounds after the mayor of the city made unconstitutional threats against the company. Even the ACLU doesn't see any gray area here...they're on the side of C-F-A.

Very true - one does not see 20. Even 20 is a very low number for a protest.

I am actually hoping that they turn out in great numbers on Aug 3 for their national “Chick-Fil-A Kiss-In” because I believe media coverage of such an event may actually gain them many DETRACTORS.

Standing on the outside looking in, one would have to wonder which side is the intolerant side? Which side forms groups to protest loudly and often threateningly, they hold often nastily worded signs, name call and make threats against and pronounce curses upon the other side? Which side does this? Stand back from all emotion either way and see which side makes a big deal over the enforcement of acceptance of Behavior that the majority of the nation sees as unhealthy and therefor questionable. When did humanity become males, females and gays? Male and female is bestowed by nature(God bestows nature upon us)while gay is about the behavior of some males and some females, isn’t it? And while they protest they feel or are oppressed and they want to over throw the domination of human society that has been handed down through millennium, my question is: Is that what they really want or do they want to become the new oppressor? Is being the dominator really their agenda?

Good point, and we both know the answer to your last 2 questions: Yes and Yes.

It's time to start using their tactics. Put their names and addresses on the internet and give them the same business they give. Protest in front of their homes. Hold signs saying they hate Christians. Put videos of them on youtube. Mock the heck out of them individually, loudly and publicly.

Exactly. They want to stifle dissent in ANY form and have one single standard of thinking. UNdemocratic in the extreme.

Most “Gays “ are angry because the’re Homosexuals.
Get over it, and leave the rest of us alone.
Now anytime I am near a Chic-Fil-A, I will have lunch or dinner.

The question is What are they really angry about? Are they angry about mobs breaking into their bedrooms, separating them and placing them in jail or re-education camps? Hell no, we don’t do this in this decent society, we are more tolerant then we often should be. Or are they angry that they can’t do those things to the rest of society in order to make the rest of society like them? Why are they so angry? And even if the rest of society said fine and gave a stamp of approval, would they still be angry and protesting that everyone wasn’t just like them? Probably.
