It is often said that guns, particularly assault rifles, are designed for one thing, and one thing only: to kill lots of people.
Assault rifles in the United States are failing miserably in this purpose. There are tens of millions of assault rifles in America. Because the definition of an assault rifle has been rather fuzzy, the number can be said to be anywhere from 10 million to 30 million. Of those, the AR-15 type is fairly common with numbers between 5 and 10 million.
The FBI murder statistics do not differentiate between types of rifles. There are about 100 million rifles in the United States. In 2009, the last year in which numbers have been reported, there were 13,636 murders. Guns were used to murder 9,146 people. Hands and feet were used to murder 801 people. Blunt objects were used to murder 611 people. Rifles were used to murder 348 people, and that is all rifles, of which assault rifles are only a small fraction. Assault rifles are used so infrequently in homicides that many police departments almost never see them; in 2009, there were nine states that did not have a single murder committed with any rifle.
So why is the left so intent on banning rifles that are the most suitable for militia use (clearly protected by the U.S. Constitution), when they are used so rarely in murder? Banning baseball bats would make more sense, yet would be nearly as senseless.
It is this disassociation from facts and reality that lead many ordinary people to believe that when their government works to disarm them, it is up to no good.
We know why.
They are demonized by the left precisely because they are PERFECT for self/home defense, and not crime where they usually are concealed.
-30 round magazines make sure the home owner doesn’t run out of ammo before the adversary does.
-mid caliber rifle gives good firepower relative to handgun while not being too big in close quarters.
-Lots of cheap abundant parts and ammunition.
You left out that they do make one hell of a club if you run out of ammo.
” Banning baseball bats would make more sense, yet would be nearly as senseless. “
boy that’s some good writing there.../sarc
The gun doomies really are doomed. People will be able to print firearms in their homes in twenty years, maybe less:
I’m betting the murder statistics don’t include battered children deaths.
The number killed with bare hands is way too low.
Of course this is an advocacy site. They claim 5 deaths a day due to abuse.
I think that you understand that they are likely to inflate the figures in their favor. I suspect that their definition of abuse is very broad.
Non gun mass murders
And a mass murder that didnt happen because the bomb went off ahead of time. BILL AYERS friends.
Ayers then-girlfriend Diana Oughton, along with Weatherman members Terry Robbins and Ted Gold, were killed when a bomb they were constructing exploded unexpectedly. That bomb had been intended for detonation at a dance that was to be attended by hundreds of Army soldiers at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Ayers himself attested that the bomb would have done serious damage, tearing through windows and walls and, yes, people too. Notably, Ayers’ fingerprints were found at the bomb-making site, along with an assortment of anti-personnel weapons, stabbing implements, C-4 plastic explosive, and dozens of Marxist-Leninist publications.
Many years ago I read a very astute in-depth analysis of how to avoid becoming a murder victim:
1. Do not have a relationship with an abusive person of either sex.
2. Do not commit crimes or associate with those who do (the great majority of murders are criminals killing rivals and associates).
3. Do not frequent bars which sell beer for $1.
Take away those types of murders and we have a crime rate like Switzerland.
101 ways to chock someone - OMG better outlaw feet and hands - jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez. HUM define Assualt rifles - Seems all those AR-15s are not guilty
4. Stay away from any street named Martin Luther King Boulevard...
In Hillsborough County M. L. King Blvd is a long road. The road goes from Tampa to Plant City.
It should be borne in mind that these items are NOT assault rifles - they are civilian copies of the rifles issued to US troops.
The term “assault rifle” used in this context is used to inflame a non-issue.
Most of Obama’s supporters don’t need hands and feet anyway.
