Car dealers fear Obama fuel standards will make new vehicles unaffordable
fox news ^ | 7/30/2012 | fox news

Posted on 07/30/2012 3:34:27 AM PDT by tobyhill

The White House is expected to OK federal standards in the next few weeks that will nearly double vehicle gas mileage for vehicles by 2025, as automotive dealers warn the changes could slam the recovering retail car industry because they will come with sticker prices that will keep buyers off their lots.

The recommendations call for “fleet wide” gas mileage of 54.4 miles a gallon by 2015 -- essentially the average gas mileage for cars, trucks, vans and all other vehicles in a model year.

The Environmental Protection Agency and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration submitted their proposed 2017-2025 fuel-efficiency recommendations in mid-July to the administration’s Office of Management and Budget.

“Dealers support fuel economy increases,” Bailey Wood, a National Automobile Dealers Association spokesman told FoxNews.com Saturday. “But if dealers cannot put vehicles on the road, we cannot reduce greenhouse gases or our dependence of foreign oil.”

It’s taken over 100 years to get fleet gas mileage to 30 now they think they can get to 54 mpg in the next 3 years?

Somebody is smoking dope.

They don’t want you to have your own car.

The ultimate freedom is being able to jump in your own conveyance and go wherever you want, whenever you want.

You cannot control people who are that free.

Gasoline at $5+ per gallon, new cars starting at $35,000, “safety” and environmental gadgetry that is prohibitively expensive to repair, road regulations that force older cars off the road, exorbitant insurance rates, and the dwindling buying power of the Middle Class will force more people into the cities to use “public transportation”, making them ever more dependent upon the totalitarian collectivist state.

If you mandated a car be made out of very light-weight metals and mandated that 3-cylinder light-turbo cars be the norm....then 54 mpg is very possible. Moving the national speed limit to 50 mph would also help. Course, none of these are very acceptable except in California.

The Environmental Protection Agency and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration submitted their proposed 2017-2025 fuel-efficiency recommendations in mid-July to the administration’s Office of Management and Budget.

Either that's a typo and they mean "2025", or the Obamanistas have concluded it's the only way people are ever going to start buying Chevy Volts.

(Everything these idiots do hurts "their people" more than the people they are trying to "get even" with - "Cash for Clunkers" decreased the supply of used cars, and so raised used car prices. Who is most likely to want to buy a cheap, used car? The Republican demographic or the Democrat demographic?)

"Another concern is the Obama administration’s plan -- which includes more hybrid and electric cars -- will not achieve its goal of “getting gas-guzzlers off the road” because motorists will keep their existing cars or be forced to buy less-fuel-efficient used ones, Wood said."

We aren’t talking aboiut one car here. We are talking fleet mileage.

In order to make up for their SUV’s the smaller cars they sell would have to get 75 Mpg. Then they would have to be able to sell these little golf carts.

Cuba hasn't imported any cars from the US since 1959 -- it's amazing how long a car can last if it needs to.

The '40s and '50s vintage cars in Cuba were simple and rugged; many of them have had engines from other parts of the globe swapped in (which the Cuban government was smart enough to allow).

The current crop of vehicles isn't likely to be as easy to keep on the road for 50+ years, nor will *our* Communist regime allow us to even try.

How did we allow these democrats/marxist to do this to us?

Government shouldn't be able to tell us what kind of car to buy or tell companies what to produce. That is socialism/communism.

This is against freedom. This isn't what America was or is supposed to be .

This isn't America. This isn't freedom . America is supposed to be freedom not govrenment control . What's wrong with these government idiots and sheep(democrats) that accept this? WE have to reduce government . These government idiots shouldn't be allowed to do all of these millions of things they are doing. The leftists looked at a red-blue map and concluded the best way to drain power form the red areas is to make suburban and rural living prohibitively expensive. The theory is once those Bible thumping conservatives are brought into the hive they will be assimilated. The auto, cheap gas and cheap electricity are bad things to the leftist fascist.

“road regulations that force older cars off the road”

This is the part that’s going to get very tricky. Somehow they have to get the older cars off the road, without violating the sacred alter of SOCIAL JUSTICE (i.e., without punishing the poor).

They will come up with something. Maybe huge vehicle registration charges for everyone as their cars get older, but then a huge rebate to “the poor” so that they can buy new replacements. Who knows? But something...

I am privy to a study performed jointly by GM and the casualty insurance industry, which revealed the following:

The driver’s side seat belt, when buckled, increases the survivability of a front-end collision by 65%. When the driver’s side air bag is added, it provides another 5% survivability.

The passenger side seat belt afforded 85% increased survivability, with the air bag adding a statistical benefit close to zero. Note the reference here is to survivability and no claim was made as to reduced injury.

The study was presented when the government, already having mandated the driver’s side airbag, was attempting (and, of course, succeeded) in mandating the passenger side airbag.

The argument by the auto makers was that there was negligible benefit to the passenger inflatable restraint, and it was predicted that there may be other dangerous consequences, and of course, an extra five hundred dollars was added to the cost to produce.

The “other dangerous consequences” turned out to be the death of several under 80 pound children, and the fact that the passenger airbag many times breaks the windshield during a collision.

In short, you cannot buy a vehicle without the passenger air bag, but it has near-zero value to safety, especially when the cost and the safety negatives are factored in.

The other mandated plagues to the manufacturers include the oxygen sensors in the exhaust, which constantly go bad at a tremendous cost to the car makers (and ultimately to you), and the Tire Pressure Monitors, which cause more trouble than they save, because the air in your tires expands and contracts with temperature extremes, rendering the monitors valueless when compared to added cost by virtue of needless visits to the repair shop to turn the lights off.

Your vehicles would be several thousand dollars cheaper without these mandates of dubious value.

Thank you, thank you, thank you......... The engine light came on and I took it to the dealer. Diagnosis: “lazy oxygen sensor”

Subsequently I asked about it and was advised not to worry if the O2 sensor was out because it essentially did nothing important. Replacement cost $453
