The official said 28 passengers had been hospitalised with burns.
The burning coach was noticed early on Monday as the train passed through a railway station 500 kilometres south of Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh state.
The train was stopped and the burning coach was detached from the rest of the train to prevent the fire from spreading.

Dreadful place with plague and all? How many times have you actually been to India?
The trains are actually quite safe when you consider the fact that it carries 14 million passengers everyday and covers a total of 2 million kilometers.

Last week I flew from Charlotte to Atlanta. They announced that due to the short flight (1 hour), only water would be served (in Coach).
A while back I had a flight from Rajkot to Mumbai. In Coach we were served a hot breakfast. Flight time was 45 minutes.
On an earlier visit I took the train from Chennai to Paramakudy. Admittedly, I traveled Second Class rather than Third, but the trip was enjoyable.
India has lots of problems but she also has millions and millions of engineers, designers, builders and ordinary folks who are willing to work hard and who aspire to a better life.
I probably was not good enough to be hired by the Indian company with whom I was dealing. My Indian counterpart was much sharper than I, as were many of his subordinates.

(Sigh) It's a sad reflection on US when people come to know about India from a comedy tv series.
I do know not to use the toilet while visiting.

I think India will be a strategic and important ally in the future.

I concur with Larry’s assessment.
With the continual rise of China as both an economic and military superpower we need a strong ally on the Asian continent. Pakistan is of course another area of concern that makes a strong ally necessary. India is really the best option and we should nurture that relationship. BTW I think we should also continue to build on our strong relationship with Australia.
In all seriousness my area of expertise is Southern Africa as well as Liberia, Sierra Leone and Côte d’Ivoire. I have lead multiple military missions to those areas and it is disconcerting to see the political/economic influence that China is having not only in those areas, throughout Africa. Everything from the building of roads to providing cell phone service. Spent some time in Morocco as well. Love it there and hope to go back.
While I have never been to India, I do look forward to traveling to Malaysia and Thailand later this year. For now I’m pretty tapped out on Europe, Saudi, Iraq and Kuwait.
Now if only India could do something about that plague thing.

Tragic thing about the HIV in Swaziland, it runs at 40-45% of the population.
Tons of innocent victims, the orphans.
The rate is attributed to the serial polygamy and the lack of male circumcision.
King Mswati III just endorsed that men should get circumcised, but as the husband of 13 wives he is not about to change the polygamy thing.
Interestingly they conduct a “Reed Dance” annually. Maidens dance for the King and a crowd of spectators wearing a skirt made of reeds but no top. The King chooses his next bride from among the maidens.
Granted the Plague can be cured if treated early enough....
Male circumcision to fight HIV is just another myth. If you are going to be polygamous with several dozen partners at a time and not use condoms, Male circumcision is not going to make much difference.
