On the heels of Chick-fil-A's president speaking out against gay marriage, a Denver-area cake shop has taken the stance a step further.
Masterpiece Cake Shop in Lakewood has refused to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple's wedding, sparking an outrage among the area's gay community, who have called for a boycott against the bakery.
Owner Jack Phillips told sister station KCNC that he has no animosity towards the gay community, and is simply refusing because he doesn't support gay marriage.
"If gays come in and want to order birthday cakes or any cakes for any occasion, graduations or whatever, I have no prejudice against that whatsoever. It's just the wedding cake, not the people, not their lifestyle," Phillips said.
But many in the community say Phillips' refusal is exactly that: discriminating against the lifestyle of gay individuals.
"I feel a need to disclose to anyone with an 'alternative' lifestyle that this company does not want your business, as they do not participate in making cakes for 'illegal' things such as a commitment ceremony," one woman wrote on the company's yelp.com page.
A group has established an online petition calling for a boycott against the bakery.
"We need to send a message to them that in this day and age, bigotry cannot and will not be tolerated," the petition reads. It has 2,125 signatures.
Beyond the Internet, KCNC reports that Phillips has received 1,000 angry messages about his stance.
Similar with the furor surrounding Chick-fil-A, some in the local community are applauding Phillips, ordering cakes from the shop specifically because of his position on gay marriage.
Even some protesters say they don't want to see the shop close down, but simply change their policy.
I support local business, I think its really important to our community to support local business, protester Cate Owen told KCNC. "I think we should want them to change...it's not like we want to shut them down."
Dozens of protesters swarmed the building Saturday, and have planned a bigger protest for next weekend.
So much for the 1st Amendment. Liberals are the most intolerant people!
Going to have to find that bakery and buy some stuff from them. I can’t stand the leftist thuggery against opinions they don’t like.
“We need to send a message to them that in this day and age, bigotry cannot and will not be tolerated,”
so we will boycott, shun, and shut down anyone who disagrees with us. And that’s not bigotry, that’s OK, because it’s gay rights.
Another thought criminal being brought to justice!
“I think we should want them to change”
Well what a coinkydink - that’s exactly what we want for homosexuals! And since it’s a choice, they can.
I hope, for their sakes, that the owners support the Second Amendment as well.
The gays are so pathetic. I am 100% sure there is more than 1 bakery in Denver. If not, they could always go to Boulder, more than enough liberal morons there.
Push back really drives these folks crazy doesn’t it.
2125 signatures to protest in an area with tens of thousands of people.
Rather revealing isn’t it.
I suggest we all go out and buy something from places like this. When they protest, that’s the time to line up around the block buying cakes, cookies, anything else this guy sells.
In your face assholes.
One thing 0bama HAS succeeded at is TURNING AMERICA ON ITSELF, and I don’t mean that in a sexual way.
He’s never packed fudge into a cake filling before.
“We want to send a message to them that in this day and age, Christianity will not be tolerated.”
He makes cakes. He doesn’t have to write on it whatever you want.
If someone requested a “Congratulations on your recent abortion” cake, would he have to sell them one with that script?
They could always buy a cake and put their own frosting on the top.
No shoes, no shirt, no same sex, no service!
“We Reserve The Right To REFUSE SERVICE To Anyone!
How silly! Seems the owner doesn't want business from homosexual soon-to-be-married couples anyway, so how will their boycotting him hurt? On the other hand, liberals and especially homosexuals have become the very bigots that they demonstrate against.
Wow, I had been under the impression that Chick-Fil-A didn’t have units in the Los Angeles region. In fact, they have over 40 of them in the greater Los Angeles area. I’ll be visiting the nearest one to me, in Hollywood later this week.
This flap was a stroke of genius for the CEO. I don’t remember even hearing about Chick-Fil-A before this. I’ll bet millions of Americans were in the same boat.
LOL< way to shoot yourself in the foot complainers.
Wonder if you can buy their cakes, etc... online or through Fed Ex shipment....
Had Chick-Fil-A (sic) Saturday. Mr. hummingbird picked some up, and gift cards, too, I think.
He called and said if there was a boycott, Chick-Fil-A could probably do this often!
The “buy”-cott was a packed restaurant with the line going outside the bldg. and the parking lot jam packed with merry “buy”-cotters!
Another “HA HA” for the liberal, gayness crowd.
Excellent. Speak up normal Americans - or risk never being able to speak up again.
This is great advertising for the heterosexual consumer. They know they're safe from the rabid homos agenda when they shop there.
This has been great for Chic Fil A. I sincerely hope this is becoming a new pro-family movement. It's way over due. I hope all people - young, old, rich, poor - all speak up against the homo abomination. Disease and perversion have never done anything good for a country. It's time to stand up and take our country back. The next generation will thank you for it.
“We need to send a message to them that in this day and age, bigotry cannot and will not be tolerated,”
Unless, of course, it’s liberal bigotry against Christians. That’s okay.
I think we should buybott more places that don;t bow to PC pressure.
