The International Olympic Committee (IOC) defended a German official who has been accused of performing the 'Nazi salute' during the opening ceremony of the London Games.
Honorary IOC member Walther Troger was filmed extending his left arm back and forth repeatedly as the German team marched around London's Olympic stadium on July 27, The Telegraph reported.
IOC spokesman Mark Adams vehemently denied allegations that Trogers hand motion was a Nazi salute.
"I can't think of anyone who is less anti-Semitic than him," he said adding that he is devastated that it was interpreted in this way."
According to The Telegraph, in 1972, Troger, who was at that time serving as mayor of the Olympic Village during the Munich Games, offered to exchange himself for Israeli hostages during the Black September terrorist attack.
In 2004 he reportedly complained to the IOC about Germans wearing t-shirts reading: "Blitzkrieg - it's only a game."
"It's infamous, disgusting and unacceptable to create any kind of relation to Nazis. He's been standing all his life for tolerance, understanding and fair play," said Christian Kalue, a spokesman for the German Olympic Sports Federation.

That’s all I need to know about the man right there.
They probably think they are doing it all right. Defending the “Palestinians”, defending the Nazi-saluting feller . . . and very little backlash. Kinda like the 30s, eh?
well, not for nothing, what has been described as a nazi salute...judge for yourself:
I don’t see it that way, does anyone know the condition of his right arm? He does seem to favor it in this clip...sorry I don’t see it
The Nazi salute was done with the right arm. Swinging your left arm back and forth doesn’t look like a Nazi salute to me.
Right, and the guy didn’t know what it looked like. I see.
Like I say. He doesn’t seem to be a Nazi. What was it, though? He just had a cramp in his arm? Talk about bad timing. Can’t these people do anything right?
Doesn’t really look like a Nazi salute anyway, now that I’ve seen it. That shoots straight forward and up from the hip, not from the side like he did. What a ridiculous misunderstanding, easily avoidable by competent people.
If someone snapped a photo at my church during the blessing of the prayer blankets, it would look like Nuremberg.
since when was the Nazi salute done with the left hand?
"Mein Fuhrer, I can VALK!"
Sheesh. How absolutely silly. How simple it is for idiots to smear someone’s reputation these days.
IOC: Well you started it.
German: No I didn’t.
IOC: Yes you did, you invaded Poland.
That picture is obviously fake... there’s no way obama could ever win an Iron Cross.
plus the Nazi salute is right handed
Aside from that, it looked like he was working a cramp out of his elbow, and picked one hell of a time to do it. They haven’t even started their stupid games yet, and the IOC keeps stumbling into controversy like the three stooges.
Lately I'm learning not to trust people with tell-tale tufts.
But it looks like this ...
... may have been part of a different kind of salute ...
This is what’s right with the Internet. We’re able to see the truth for ourselves, instead of being at the mercy of the networks like our parents were.
“The Nazi salute was done with the right arm. Swinging your left arm back and forth doesnt look like a Nazi salute to me.”
i agree. plus i own a copy of the boardgame BLITZKRIEG bu avalon hill that came out in the ‘60s. IT IS A GAME.
Maybe it was just the camera angle, too. Or maybe some people see things that just are not there at all. Sort of like how the liberals attribute all sorts of nonsense to Sarah Palin that was said by other people.
I don’t see it either. The woman next to him is waving her arm back and forth, and the people in the crowd shot are waving, so I would assume he is just waving also.
The nazis saluted with their right hands anyway.
There was another variation where they would make a similar movement, with the right arm, going from the heart area to extended. I don’t know all the technicalities of these things, but you see it in the footage usually when they are all “seig heiling” in unison.
Right - saw newsreels of Hitler doing it that way when reviewing marching Brown Shirts during street rallies.
This is similar to how the old Bellamy salute formerly used during the pledge to the flag was replaced by the hand over the heart--the old salute looked too much like the Nazi salute. Left wingers have in the past used old photos of the Bellamy salute to smear conservative groups as Nazis.
I can't make a judgment on what Troger was doing, but I just thought these factoids were interesting.
Bellamy of Looking Backward is now a “right-winger”? He was such a freakin’ socialist! Looks like the Leftists have always been ardent disciples of Goebles.
