Mommy Bloomberg - force new mothers to breast feed their children?1?1!
New York Sun ^ | 073012 | New York Sun Editorial

The latest from New York’s commissioner of mental hygiene is that maternity wards in New York are going to start locking up their baby formula so as to force new mothers to breast feed their children. This scheme, according to the report in the New York Post, will start in 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals September 3. It’s part of the so-called “Latch on NYC” initiative the mental hygiene commissioner sprung on the city in May. The idea seems to be that New Yorkers elected the mayor to station the commissioner, Dr. Thos. Farley, between each newborn and his mother to make sure she doesn’t use her own best judgment in making her choice of how to feed her baby. Of course, if her choice had been that she’d wanted to abort the baby, the mayor would have hustled Dr. Farley out of the way faster than you could say Margaret Sanger.

So, how ‘bout the mothers who drink and do drugs? Great nutrition for the babies.

In a city where restaurants are threatened with closure for using too much salt, where kids aren’t allowed to purchase a soda at school, the same kids are somehow mature enough at 11 to be MANDATED into the most perverted pro-sex sex ed course ever devised.

WSJ had a story years back, some mothers bought into the breast feed only propoganda, and their babies suffered brain damage from malnutrition.

I think breastfeeding is the way to go, but why is the mayor bothering about this when he’s got regular Mayor stuff to do? Doesn’t anybody stick to their job description any more?

There is nothing wrong with breastfeeding. It’s perverts who want to make it into something public and sexual by making breastfeeding porn.

But Bloomberg is the future of liberalism. The public as a whole are too stupid to make he the right decisions a progressive world. The Bloombergs will make the usual personal decisions for the public and call it liberation.

Seems this would fall under the “my body, my choice” thing. If you can’t make a woman use her womb to carry a child, how can you make her use her breasts to feed a child?

What happened to, “My body, my choice.”

There are a lot of misconceptions about this program (justifiably so, given the source - Bloomberg). This program does not prohibit or restrict mothers who want formula from getting formula. All it does, in the hospitals that (voluntarily) participate, is make it so that mothers who want to breastfeed don't have formula pushed on them.

When my daughter was born, in a NYC hospital that was not part of this program, my wife told the hospital she wanted to breastfeed only. The baby was in the NICU for a 48-hour observational period, so my wife asked the nurses to come get her any time the baby wanted to eat, and not to give her formula. Some nurses listened, some nurses didn't. There was no medical indication for formula - it was just what the nurses were used to doing. So, for the first couple of days, my daughter was being periodically supplemented with formula, against my wife's wishes. This caused/contributed to lasting milk-supply issues which made it difficult/impossible for my wife to exclusibely breastfeed (which, again, is what she wanted to do).

Had this program been in place at the time, that never would have happened. If you ask me, that would have expanded, not restricted, my wife's choices.

>> maternity wards in New York are going to start locking up their baby formula

Tax-payer funded formula?

So Bloomberg is a Nazi for not handing out supplies?

Breast milk is arguably superior to formula. And labor is far superior to welfare. Barring medical urgency, what’s the problem? I presume a paying customer is not prohibited from purchasing formula.

I’m sure hospitals charge for formula. Look at your bill— I paid a ton for the Motrin they gave me after my daughter was born! My only pain killer, thank you very much!

I also had to use formula because of a medication I had to start after my daughters birth. My hospital hounded me to breastfeed and use cloth diapers. I had to have my doctor tell the nurses to shut up, I couldn’t breastfeed, and might have chose not to even if I could have. My solution: My sister brought me a half case of the disposable little formula bottles you just put the nipple on and a big package of Pampers. This daughter is an athlete, an honor student, and musician. Formula did not harm her in any way.

Smart move not to pass the pain killers along to your child!

Cloth diapers?

Newborns are great. Their little stinky smells and all...

Exactly. All the pro-coice bally-hoo and now the government will FORCE women to breast feed.

As stated elsewhere, some women cannot produce sufficient quantities or the right kind of nutritious milk.

Also some of the little biggers have teeth!

Go ahead and kill all the babies you “choose” but by gum you WILL breast feed the ones who survive!

As the victim of childhood sexual abuse, I was not capable of an act that ‘intimate’ and in my twisted mental make up, sexual in nature. One of the nurses at my Georgia hospital my oldest was born tried to berate me into breastfeeding while in labor! “Don’t you love your baby?” she actually said to me when asking ‘breast or bottle?’ from the form.

A nurse’s aid saw my distress and when the ole biddy left, came and said “You just look at that baby with all the love in your heart when you give her that bottle and she will never know the difference.”

Breastfeeding is a beautiful thing, but it isn’t the ONLY way.

My post... I do NOT see BF as sexual, but the female body responds in odd ways to breast stimulation and while a normal woman wouldn’t make a connection, some of us have issues.

But just in general, that’s ridiculous to think it sexual in nature.

A) Some people pay their hospital bills or have insurance. Did I wake up in Canada? How do you get that it’s ‘tax’ bought?

B) It’s samples given by the formula companies.

Who does this bloomberg democrat idiot think it is?By what right do they tell us what to do?They have no right. This is a typical democrat who trusts government . Why do democrats trust government and government bureaucrats? Government is the ultimate evil as the UN proves.Goverment tries to control you for your own good they say. If you give government power to control you for your own good then you give them power to really do something even worse to you . It's a slippery slope. government morons want to make so many things illegal that then they can crack down on us for anything and then have absolute power. We cannot allow government to tell us what to do no matter the justification or how good for us it is. the danger, the enemy is government not what they propose to correct and make so perfect. life is inherently dangerous. We have to each take responsibility for our own health, protection etc. and not rely on government idiots who say they are so saintly and out to protect us like we are children. And now with google or startpage ( a private search engine) and individual can research what is really good for them and not what the government tells you is good for you. This nanny bloomberg should mind it's own businesses. it is the idea that government is allowed to control us as in the government schools that is dangerous , more so than any threat the media and gov make up. Once we allowed them to control what we drink like Sodas we open another pandoras box as we did with the government schools. To think that most people think that the ultimate evil (government) is allowed to educate ( brainwash) our chlldrent, to turn over our childrent to these perverted government idiot is the height of idiocy . yet most Americans embrace and trust the government schools. that is when we opened another pandora’s box allowing government to educate our kids and us. There should be in the constitution explicit mandates that government at no level should be alllowed to do anything like government schools or charity or anything for our health or housing or welfare.

Government is inherently evil, corrupt, and inefficient. We need to eliminate 99% of these government agencies like the DEA, EPA, HUD ,IRS, TSA, government schools, dept of energy, and so on. Government at all levels must be reduced. All we need is military , border control, customs, some police , courts and that's it.

These gov agencies just choke and destroy businesses and take away our freedom.

Maybe something’s in the water there in New York such that Bloomberg has a reason to fear feeding infants formula that was made with it. It is certainly driving Bloomberg mad.

Let’s see, in Bloomberg City it’s beyond thinking to warn a mother who is about to “have an abortion” (kill her unborn child) why she might regret that! But they will brow beat mothers who might have a perfectly valid medical reason to formula feed (for your case were you being expected to get a note from your psychiatrist before the nurses would quit nagging you?). If you hug or cradle a baby while it is drinking formula, that baby will be just as happy. In fact dad can do that as well as mom.
