Texas ranchers and dairy operators Monday backed a request by national agricultural producers to suspend the nation’s Renewable Fuels Standard because it is causing corn prices to soar and livestock producers to suffer.
A coalition including the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and National Pork Producers Council, sent a petition to the Environmental Protection Agency asking for a waiver “in whole or in substantial part” to the output requirements under the Renewable Fuels Standard for 12 months.
“An unsustainable situation has been created by the drought combined with the lack of cushion in corn supply due to the tremendous demand from ethanol producers,” Tom Super, a spokesman for the National Chicken Council, part of the coalition, said Monday on a conference call with reporters. “We believe that the RFS is causing severe economic harm during this crisis.”
Texas, the nation’s largest beef-producing state, did not have any organizations formally named on the petition, but cattle, hog and dairy producers in the state not only endorsed the request, several called for an end to the fuels standard standard altogether.
“It’s not just for the cattlemen, it’s for the consumers,” said Bill Hyman, executive director of the Independent Cattlemen’s Association of Texas. “Everything is going to be higher because of the use of corn in ethanol.”

I remember getting into an argument with a liberal over this, and he poo-poo’ed me when I said it would raise prices. I’d like to laugh in her face now, but it’s not that funny.
EPA response: We’ll make you a deal. We’ll knock off the requirement for cellouse based ethanol.
(Yeah, we know ther is no such thing. But we will stop suing people who are required to use it but are not.)

Ethanol makes no sense at any time. We are closing coal plants and burning corn for fuel. Only in the mind of a liberal does this work.

Amen to that. The direct savings wouldn’t be all that much, but the indirect boost to our economy would be HUGE.
The EPA has its fingers in every aspect of our economy and our personal lives — and it’s getting worse every day.
Wasn't an issue in Iowa this year. Past years yes, but less every year.

The recent drought in the corn belt has boosted corn futures and will affect the corn ethanol industry with higher prices. Despite lavish subsidies and tax breaks the price of ethanol has to go up and will be reflected at the gas pump in the price of ethanol blended fuels. Right now a 10% ethanol blend enjoys about a 10 cents per gallon price advantage over straight gasoline. If high corn prices reduce this price difference the market will quickly decide that ethanol isn’t worth the price.
I long for the day they get this sorry crap out of our gas!!! I have lost a lot of respect for the farmers and the political hacks who are responsible for the heavy handed way this was done. we should not be subsidizing anything!!
Agreed. This stuff mucks up engines. Try starting a motorcycle that has been sitting idle in a garage for month with a tank full of this ethanol gunk. Doesn’t make me very happy.
