Tense Moment in Courtroom (Reese trial NM ATF)

On Tuesday during trial there were some tense and uneasy moments when the prosecution brought a number of weapons and ammo into the court room. Weapons themselves aren’t a problem, and the ammo wasn’t either. The problem occured when the prosecution started picking up AK-47s and AR-15s and swinging them around the room pointed randomly at people – unintentionally. The careless handling of the weapons caught the eye of the Judge who stopped the prosecution and made sure the weapons were unloaded and secured. The prosecution stopped in place and showed him whatever methods they had used to secure the weapons.

The first thing everyone trained in firearms learns is ALWAYS treat the weapon as if it is loaded. Something I always noticed at New Deal is the employees always had the barrel pointed in a safe direction removed magazines if there were any in the gun, and cleared the chambers at least 3 times, with the barrel pointed in a safe direction before handing over a gun to a prospective buyer or another employee.

It would have been much better for everyone, jurors, judge, the defense and the peanut gallery had they explained what measures had been taken to secure the guns before they started swinging weapons around and making everyone nervous and uneasy. You would have thought with ATF around, someone would have explained that simple procedure to the prosecutors and other helping carrying the evidence up to the front table.

Yeah - “don’t point a weapon at anything you don’t want to shoot” seems to be such reasonable advice. But then, prosecutors (especially federal prosecutors) are often both arrogant and ignorant of things like firearms.

As the son of a USMC lifer, it has been drilled into my DNA that you do not ever for any reason point a weapon at someone unless you are prepared to shoot them.

Even watching old episodes of “The Rifleman,” one of my favorite old shows, I want to holler at Chuck Connors that he shouldn’t go swinging his rifle barrel around past people like he does.

Whoever did this should be taken behind the woodshed and taught some manners.

“unintentionally” my eye!

They knew what they were doing.

Lawyers are scum.

It’s a mistake to assume that ATF employees are gun experts.

My favorite JAG episode was when Harm fired the machine gun in the courtroom during the trial.

What’s the name of the reality show that’s based on the Red Jacket Fireams company? THAT show is insane, the way they point guns at eachother. Every one of those folks scare the crap out of me.

It’s a mistake to assume that ATF employees are gun experts.

Or even slightly knowledgeable.
