Democrats are poised to add gay marriage to the party's platform for this year's election, and a new poll shows the timing may be perfect.
Nearly two-thirds of Democrats -- 65% -- now support gay marriage, a 15% increase from this time in 2008, according to a new poll from the Pew Research Center.
The partisan divide on gay marriage is also increasing substantially. Though Republicans supporting same-sex marriage increased from 19% in 2008 to 24% in 2012, the gap between Dems and Republicans jumped from 23% in 2004 to 31% in 2008 and is now at 41% in this most recent survey. Independents split the two parties, with just over half -- 51% -- supporting same-sex marriage, a seven point increase from 2008.
President Obama's declaration that he personally supports gay marriage did not have a major effect on the public's opinion, as numbers conducted before and after the president's announcement showed similar support from the general public.
The group Obama may have roused most are liberal Democrats. Dems in general support same-sex marriage at 5% more after Obama's announcement, but liberal Democrats made a 10-point jump in the several months after the announcement, according to the Pew study.
Much of the increasing support of gay marriage may be generational, as significant gaps are apparent between age groups. Those born after 1980 support gay marriage at the highest percentage, 63%. Those born between 1965 and 1980 support at 52%, while those born between 1946 and 1964 sit at 41% and the oldest generation surveyed, those born between 1928 and 1945 support the issue at just 33%.
Since 2004, however, there have been a steady rise in each of those generation's support for gay marriage, with each jumping at least 11% in the past eight years.
I had a similar grandfather and yes, I would imagine they both are.
Would you please repeat that?
Opinion polling is flawed on this issue. Look at the state amendments—when they passed, how much they passed by, and if the state was generally liberal or conservative. It’s not as rosy as most folks on the side of actual marriage would like, in my opinion.
“And the third which does not just exited the party...”
The killing of unborn people has been a plank in the dem platform for how long? I reckon the folks who stayed after that one aren’t going to leave in any great numbers over ‘gay marriage.’ I reckon I just don’t see it happening, it would be nice if it does though.

The two candidates vying for the Florida House District 120 seat took turns Monday night espousing support for gay rights, including the right to marry and adopt babies.

Unbelievable. Except not really for RINOs.
Isn’t this the real question: Which battle ground state will swing Democrat because of the support for gay marriage?
I can’t think any red state will go blue.
Did this help McCaskill? Manchin? Nelson?
With the electoral evidence we have on how people who actually vote feel about this, I think the entire DNC just trod upon the ones dobber with their golf cleats on.
