SPRINGFIELD — Gov. Pat Quinn is renewing a push in Illinois to ban assault weapons in the wake of the killings at a Colorado theater that left 12 dead and dozens more wounded.
The Democratic governor also revealed plans today to propose a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines in Illinois.
He said in a letter to all state lawmakers that he supports the U.S. Constitution's 2nd Amendment right to bear arms, but the "proliferation of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines undermines public safety and the right of personal security of every citizen."
The proposal comes in the form of an amendatory veto of a bill that he is sending back to lawmakers to consider whether to support or reject. Even in the wake of the Colorado shootings, Quinn will find himself with a tough sell in a legislature that is so deeply divided over guns that no major pro-gun or anti-gun legislation has moved forward for years.
In recent years, Chicago Democrats have turned out in favor of gun control......

Why the knee jerk action to ban assault looking weapons? Most of the dead at the theater shooting succumbed to the blasts of the most popular wing shooter ever made, the Remington 870 pump shotgun. Are they planning on banning that too?
So, what are they going to do with all the armed gangbangers and other assorted criminals that will still own assault weapons? (Could be the excuse they need to declare martial law and get the military involved).

Another gun ban. yeah, right. As if any gun ban has worked. Gun Ban Chicago, where it is more deadly than Afghanistan. (which has loads of assault weapons) Innocent Citizens are defenseless while gangbangers run free.

I recently had to request some documentation regarding a family member from Gov. Pat Quinn, which was somewhat privileged and difficult to come by. The man is a sweetie!!! He responded to me immediately, indicating an assistant counsel would research the matter,and my response was prompt, efficient, and 100% what I needed. I DO believe in our 2nd amendment rights, the right to self defense, and the right to bear arms to overcome tyranny...but can also see the Governor’s point that we don’t need the deadly and sophisticated type of weaponry that our forefathers wouldn’t dream being available now falling into the hands of citizenry who would abuse the right, and turn it against their fellow citizens.

That’s exactly what the wife and I were talking about when we heard this over dinner. This is political theater, nothing more. As with any socialist, they want these guns banned because they pose a threat to their status of power over the people. They ignore the fact Chicago already had some of the most draconian gun laws on the books, and any further ban on weapons would only prevent law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves from the criminals. Something Quinn, and his cohorts, would relish...
You are overtly naive, or clueless. Arms have developed over the centuries. Do you believe back in the 17/1800’s citizens were only allowed weapons less powerful than the military as a whole? The whole point of the 2nd Amendment is to insure citizens can protect themselves from enemies both foreign and DOMESTIC. And if those enemies, including those domestic, have assault weapons, then it’s incumbent on the citizenry to be equally armed. Period. Paragraph. It we’re not, then our freedom is toast.
