Justice Department shrugs off Fast and Furious report - Officials say they have moved ahead
Los Angeles Times ^ | 8/1/12 | By Richard A. Serrano, Washington Bureau

Posted on 07/31/2012 9:12:58 PM PDT by Nachum

WASHINGTON — Top Justice Department officials largely dismissed a new House Republican report on the Fast and Furious gun-tracking operation, saying Tuesday that they have moved ahead with major reforms to prevent future incidents of U.S. firearms being lost and smuggled across the border into Mexico.

Further, the attorney for the ATF special agent in charge in Phoenix, who oversaw Fast and Furious, lashed out at Republican congressional leaders, calling their report a "political witch hunt" aimed less at finding fault than pinning Democrats with negative political fallout from Fast and Furious.

The report by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Vista), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and Sen. Charles E. Grassley, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, concluded that five supervisors at the federalBureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were collectively responsible for Fast and Furious, which allowed about 2,500 weapons to be illegally purchased in Arizona.

Think the main thing that would stop this is NO MORE DOJ OPERATIONS THAT MOVE US GUNS INTO MEXICO!?!?!?

Dumbass DOJ. The entire hierarchy there ought to be fired and jailed.

In other words, the DOJ will continue to ignore Congress.

Hopefully, after Romney wins, Holder and others will be brought up on charges under the new AG’s watch.

But Tracy Schmaler, the top spokeswoman at the Justice Department, said the report was filled with "distortions and now-debunked conspiracy theories." She did, however, credit the report for acknowledging that the idea for "gun walking" — allowing illegal weapons sales on the border — originated under the Republican administration before her boss, Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr., took office in 2009. She said that Fast and Furious showed "weak oversight by ATF leadership" and that Holder moved swiftly to replace the agency's management structure and instill other reforms.

Liars, deceivers and thieves.

Were is the accountability for violations and for those that died in this government sponsored scheme?

Where are the resignations?

Where are the criminal charges?

The 8 dollar an hour Jack in the Box employee can get fired for failing to show up for a work shift or asking a co-worker for a date.

Those in government sent hundreds of weapons into the violent corrupt black hole of Mexico, many were killed including U.S. citizens by these weapons.

Where is the GD accountability for these reckless, lunatic deadly policies and operations?

Where are the criminal charges?

There’s a lot more to F&F than is being put out by Issa or anyone else. That information will be coming out soon enough.

Issa better hope he’s not playing their game. If he won’t follow through all the way to the end, he’ll shoulder responsibility and blame as well as Holder and Obama and others.

There are other people out there that know a lot more about F&F than what is published. They will be speaking out.

"If Rep. Issa wants to continue to spend precious resources recycling old conspiracy theories for stale reports that do nothing to improve public safety, that is his prerogative," she said. She said Holder believed "partisan exercises like Rep. Issa's latest effort do little to address the serious issues that face our country."

The arrogance of those in government, while many died, directly due to their reckless deadly policies and operations, have reached a pinnacle.

They arrest kids for bringing a plastic knifes in their lunches to school, while those in government send hundreds of weapons into the violent corrupt black hole of Mexico, resulting in many dead, including our own border agents.

Yet no criminal charges?

Where are the criminal charges for those behind these reckless deadly government schemes?

In all seriousness, is there any reason anyone in this country should pay any attention or mind to John Boehner and crew?

We gave him and his worthless party a super majority, and the only thing they have done with it is make congress absolutely meaningless.

Well, the fact is, during Bush’s term with operation Wide Receiver, hundreds of weapons were sent into Mexico, and many were never recovered and were lost in that black hole.

I never disputed what Obama's motives might have been. But the fact remains, during Bush’s term with operation Wide Receiver, hundreds of weapons were sent into Mexico, and many were never recovered and were lost in Mexico.

Bottom line, regardless of who is in charge, or their motives, ya don't intentionally allow U.S. weapons to go into the violence of Mexico, knowing damn well many will simply disappear into that corrupt war zone.

You deceptively omitted the fact that the ATF under the Bush Administration was trying to track and interdict the much smaller number of purchased guns, sometimes while tracking with GPS devices and sometimes while coordinating with Mexican law enforcement, in an effort to stop the gun trafficking by tracing the existing traffic to the drug cartel leaders. Contrarily the ATF and its agents under the Obama Administration was ordered by the Eric Holder's DOJ not to interdict the far more extensive and consequential gun trafficking under the guise of not being able to successfully prosecute such cases, even when the gun traffickers could have been arrested and prosecuted.

Bush’s people did however remember to put the identifying info in the guns so that they could be tracked and retrieved and the perps arrested. Holder’s people forgot or ignored that little twist.

I didn't omit anything Mr. X. It was a stupid idiot operation regardless of motive.

They found the tracking devises, and cartels who have billions at their disposal, electronically sweep everything going into their compounds and safe areas. Hello??

Then Bush's boys coordinated with corrupt Mexican law enforcement, many of which are on the payroll of these cartels?

Stupid! No?

After that scheme with Bush, did the violence subside? Hell no, the violence exploded and continued, and the fact is many of the weapons in operation Wide Receiver were never recovered and were lost in Mexico.

It would be like intentionally flooding your town with Heroin in the hopes of finding and tracking the users and buyers. Reckless and stupid.

Just for you, regardless of who is in charge, or their motives, ya don't intentionally allow U.S. weapons to go into the violence of Mexico, knowing damn well many will simply disappear into that corrupt war zone, just as they did with Operation Wide Receiver.

These types of lunatic government operations and schemes we're incredibly dangerous, reckless and just plain stupid.

Did I mention I am so heartened to see you are back and posting! :-)

Bush’s failed program put tracking devices in the stocks. Since the program failed, the Bush administration stopped it.

The progressives loved the failure of Bush’s program so much, they streamlined it, pumped it up on steroids and used it to send thousands of guns over the border.

But let’s blame Bush.

Regardless of the merits and demerits of Operation Wide Receiver, you do not foster an intelligent or productive discussion of the subject by omitting key facts which serve to deceive the participants and listeners in the discussion. You also do not do your argument nor yourself any favors by falsely attempting to argue that I am defending Operation Wide Receiver because I had the temerity to call attention to your misrepresentation of the facts by your ommission of key information which clearly demonstrates the vast difference between the actions of the Obama Administration and Bush Administration.

The Obama Administration has been caught obstructing efforts to stop the gunrunning, whereas the Bush Administration was caught making sincere but ineffective efforts to stop the gunrunning already underway despite prior efforts to stop such gun trafficing. Criticizing any ineptness by either Administration does nothing to change the basic difference in the actions of the two Administrations.
