Celebrated writer and political commentator Gore Vidal has died aged 86, according to US media.
He died at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening of complications from pneumonia, his nephew, Burr Steers, told AP.
A prolific writer, Gore Vidal produced 25 novels, including the best-selling Burr and Myra Breckenridge, more than 200 essays, and several plays.
He also ran for political office twice and was a well-known commentator.
Mr Steers told the Associated Press that his uncle had been ill "for quite a while".
Along with such contemporaries as Norman Mailer and Truman Capote, Gore Vidal was among a generation of literary writers who were also genuine celebrities - fixtures on talk shows and in gossip columns

May God have mercy on his America-hating, moonbat-leftist soul
I was going to say that I hoped Buckley would punch him in his G.D. mouth, but I don’t think he’s going where Buckley is (although hopefully he will).
William Buckley ate his lunch in 1968
God should return him to sender down below, way below
Mr Steers told the Associated Press that his uncle had been ill “for quite a while”.
Approximately 86 years
Mr. Veedal, there seems to be a problem with your bill.....
Obama can’t afford to lose votes!
His historical novels are worth reading -I liked Julian and Creation.
I wonder what the fatal malady was. Despite the decedent's advanced age, in his case, the answer could still be interesting.
Agreed. Creation was very, very good.
Regardless of his politics or morals, he is acknowledged as being an extraordinary writer.
I think most of his fiction will probably be forgotten but his essays will live on. He may have been the best essayist in English since Orwell. Many of them are apolitical too.
“Gore Vidal has died aged 86...”
I won’t be attending the funeral —but I will send a nice letter stating that I approve of it.
See ya bozo.
See ya bozo.
As the great Shakespeare might say:
Get thee to thy reward, thou rancorous rump-fed foot-licker!
Begone from this mortal coil, thou rank hasty-witted pigeon-egg!
Enjoy thy banishment to thine eternal cell, thou babbling pottle-deep hypocrite!
Oh, for breath to utter what is like thee!
He was looking for an actress he wanted to interview and called my company once during the ‘70s. He was rude and arrogant. That was the only phone call we accepted from him.
Good riddance you filthy communist.
Karen: So you read Liza's paper I guess.
General Miller: I am a voracious reader. I'm the Gore Vidal of the Pentagon.
Karen: Gore's gay.
General Miller: No he's not.
Karen: I beg to differ but...
General Miller: He's gay? Cos I've been saying that Gore Vidal line a lot.
Karen: He is gay.
General Miller: Guess I'd better stop saying that then.
Equally important is that it’s time to rearrange my sock drawer.
Completely agree. I never found his fiction engaging, but he was a trenchant essayist - superior in my mind to Wilson and Mencken.
Not politically correct: won’t miss him a bit.
Watching interviews of him always left me with a sense of sadness. Here, no doubt, was a profoundly unhappy man. A nasty embittered old queen, who spent his last years living in hotels.
“Obama can’t afford to lose votes!”
Obama isn’t worried, the vast majority of dead voters go Democrat.
Myra bombed big at the box office. Vidal also wrote the screenplay for the hardcore porno flick CALIGULA.
So we see his mind was in the gutter.
Prayers for a misguided soul.
