Cruz victory a wake-up call for Washington
Houston Chronicle ^ | August 1, 2012 | Richard S. Dunham

WASHINGTON - Ted Cruz's stunning come-from-behind victory over David Dewhurst in Tuesday's Republican Senate runoff sends an unmistakable message to the political establishment in Washington that the next U.S. Senate, like the Republican-controlled House, is going to be more conservative and less willing to compromise with President Barack Obama or even a possible President Mitt Romney.

"This is going to reverberate around the Capitol in Washington and around the country," said Republican strategist Matt Mackowiak. "If you can do this in Texas, you can do it anywhere. This is a hell of a wake-up call for the establishment."

The decisive win by Cruz, a first-time office-seeker, over one of the Texas' most powerful officeholders underscores the growing clout of tea party conservatives in Republican nominating contests and the struggles that both moderate and conservative establishment figures are facing in the current political climate of grass-roots fury at the status quo.

"People perceive a crisis," said Clemson University political scientist David James Woodard, a specialist in conservative politics. "They want leadership, not experience. They're open to ideological appeals more than a résumé."

GOP strategist Mackowiak said Cruz's success "is going to convince outside groups to get involved in more races" against prominent establishment figures.

Tea party leaders were quick to claim credit for Cruz's victory after he trailed Dewhurst in the May 29 primary - warning other establishment figures that they faced extinction in future purges.

Tea Party Express chair Amy Kremer said Dewhurst's defeat "comes at the hands of the Tea Party" and no "anointed Austin politician" should expect to prevail in primary contests.

And the threats, it seems, should be taken seriously....

“.........Should Ted Cruz win the general election, and the odds are in his favor, he will join Mike Lee, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Pat Toomey, and Ron Johnson as yet another Senator who owed his nomination more to Jim DeMint than the Republican leaders in Congress.

Already, as the sun rises this morning, there is a great game of co-opting happening. Republican leaders and conservative establishmentarians are already whispering that Ted is a “reasonable” and “smart” conservative. “He won’t be like Jim DeMint.”

Ted Cruz established himself by being like Jim DeMint. He better remember that as the great fellating of his ego by Washington insiders begins. The Republicans in Washington aim to co-opt him, to pacify him, and to make him an ally in preservation of the status quo. They will use conservative editorialists, fundraisers, and others to do the dirty work. They will try to surround him with staff who can “tame” him and “show him the ropes.” They will push conservative think tankers on him who know the game and where their real allegiance is. They will try to undermine him while building him up.

Washington insiders always try to bring outsiders to the inside. Jim DeMint remains a hero to the antiestablishment crowd because that crowd knows he won’t be bought off. Ted Cruz will, we can all hope and expect, be a Texas version of Jim DeMint, and not just another go along to get along Republican on the way past $16 trillion in debt.......”

I hope this forces Romney to the right. I hope it has him shaking in his boots, but he’s not there yet.

Breyer-—what a schmuck without testosterone. At least we know Ruthie Buzzy is a hack feminist to her core. Breyer is your gelding leftist, nuanced Euroweenie-like socialist elitist lib. Remember that the Clintoons gave us these 2 beauts for the SCOTUS. And to think that a judge the caliber of Robert Bork who got rejected via vicious lies and smears is beyond ludicrous. John Jay would be aghast to see who and what has corrupted the Court.

Tea Party & Conservative enthusiasm beats moderate’s money.

” As of July 11, Dewhurst had raised more than $24.5 million compared to Cruz’s $9 million, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.”

Beginning in 2010 there have been numerous wake-up calls for DC. They continue to snooze. I don’t know about you ..... but that worries me.

If Cruz is smart..he will remember his supporters. If not for the Tea Party he would never have won the primary. I have faith because Scott Walker never waivered and beat the recall thanks to the Tea Party voters. Sure it was a state election but it shows there are men and women of character.
We will be watching!

"The Tea Party is serious about making this nation great again. "

You said it- After the USA, where else is there to go?

You could escape from china or russia or cuba or east germany - to go to the USA

But where can you go to if you have to escape the USA?

If Obama ever finally puts up a fence on the border- it will be to keep people in (like the Berlin wall)

> “one more vote against real problem-solving.”

Boy, is *that* “hooey on a stick”.

Harry Reid has not even permitted consideration of ANY federal budget for FOUR YEARS, demanding continuing resolutions from the House or else, “It will be the Republicans’ fault if the government shuts down!”, knowing that the MSM will parrot that big lie.

Conservatives, *real* conservatives, have been kept out of power since Barry Goldwater, with a “one-two punch” of radical leftist Democrats and anti-conservative RINOs, who do everything in their power to betray and undermine the conservative agenda.

Back then, the RINOs were called the “country club Republicans”, who *preferred* Republicans being the minority party, because they totally embraced “social liberalism”, even if they personally disdained Democrats for being crude and unhygienic.

They will always support radical leftists before they will support conservatives.

Finally, conservatives realized that they would keep winning battles while always losing the war if every time they were close to getting their agenda through, the RINOs would betray them. The only way to end this nightmare was to slowly and systematically purge the RINOs from the positions of power they cling to and elective seats they buy with their personal wealth.

And this technique is working. One at a time, the entrenched RINOs are finally being pried from the seats they “bought and paid for”. And it’s not all victories, either. It is a process.

But with every one of them that goes down, the closer America is to *real* “problem solving”, by tearing down the socialist apparatus, slashing the size and power of the federal government, redeeming and renewing what made America powerful and efficient.

And setting “progressivism” back a hundred years or more.

They are not snoozing;the rinos and GOP establishment simple HATE true Constitutional conservatives;Republican presidents gave us the EPA,WOD,promoted “unfair” trade acts ,and REpublican legislators compromised away our freedoms in bipartisan BS just so they could all be members of the Washington scene.

After Murkowski backstabbing deal I will not contribute to national GOP until there has been a MAJOR housecleaning.

I want to see dozens and dozens of congressmen go to washington and refuse to compromise with the evil socialists and repeal much of the past several decades government expansion.

I’m glad to see he won his primary.
I hope DC doesn’t manage to corrupt him. That place is a moral cesspit.

Freshmen on the Hill now know that leadership isn't their only path to re-election -- that they have financial muscle backing them up (they are less susceptible to threats by the entrenched political establishment to fall in line and vote how they're told to vote or that someone less rigid will be financed by the party to run against them in the next election).

I live in a GOP dominated county in Texas (Williamson County). When I arrived at the polling location, the morons at the democRAT table looked like Maytag repairmen looking for something to do.

Dewhurst did committ a gaffe. He isn’t well spoken and comes across very poorly as a communicator. Plus he was rattled that he was literally landslided by Cruz.

So, no, he didn’t mean to say that he is running for Senate against Cruz in the general.

As for the GOP-E, this wasn’t a barely eked out Cruz win, but rather a landslide. In AK that was hard fought and ended close, IIRC.

You needn’t worry on any count...the E will become Cruz supporters rather than lose a TEXAS SENATE SEAT to a DEMOCRAT.

Not to mention, even without GOP-E support, Cruz will beat the Democrat like a drum, and the E know it.

Ted Cruz is going to DC to represent the Lone Star State and his best friend will be John Cornyn.

And make no mistake, both Dewhurst and Rick Perry will work closely with Cruz, especially Perry who actually has the same states’rights philosphy as Cruz but sadly felt he had to endorse his Lt. Gov. who has even much more power in TX than the Gov.

Sit back and watch it.

If Dewhurst had not been in the way, Perry could have enthusiastically backed Cruz. They have much more in common than not.
