Chick-fil-A supporters pack Roanoke (VA) restaurant [with poll]

By Lindsey Nair | The Roanoke Times

The nationwide day of appreciation for Chick-fil-A and its ownership’s outspoken defense of a traditional view of marriage was in full force at the chain’s stand-alone restaurant outside Valley View Mall in Roanoke at lunchtime today.

The restaurant was packed, with a line of people extending from the front counter, outside the doors and into the parking lot. The drive-through line, meanwhile, wrapped around the building and at one point extended back into Valley View Boulevard, with more than 30 carloads of people waiting to order. One city police officer was on hand to monitor the traffic situation.

In a July interview, Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy said he supported a traditional view of marriage, “the biblical definition of the family unit.” The Cathy family has never hid from its Southern Baptist views, closing its restaurants on Sundays.

But Cathy's statement has fired up gay rights groups, who are calling for a nationwide “kiss-in” campaign to take place Friday.

Meanwhile, Chick-fil-A supporters have answered emphatically. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has declared today “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day,” a day to have a meal at Chick-fil-A and stand behind the restaurant.

Former Roanoke mayor and current state Sen. Ralph Smith was on hand at the Valley View Chick-fil-A today, handing out small U.S. flags to patrons.

Go to their on line shopping page and buy some merchandise. That’s what I did. Im looking forward to receiving my shirt in the mail. Their merchandise ranges from a .65 decal for your car window to a $40 hoodie. I almost bought an alarm clock, but settled on a shirt.

Would’ve been wonderful to get people registered to vote at those Chick-Fil-A’s today!

I haven’t been there regularly since the Allied Hobby shop closed. York used to be a nice town. Not so much any more.

Here's my sign. We staged a rally this morning at the Northridge CA "Chick-fil-A." Notice on my sign. I point out that Free Speech is a right, and the Right to boycott and shop elsewhere is your economic freedom as well. Many news media outlets were there. They interviewed us. We emphasized Chicago move to perhaps pull licenses from Chick-fil-A restaurants -- was anti-free speech and anti-free enterprise. Our Rights include the right to 'annoying' opinions and to 'annoying' business owners, as long as these activities are peaceful. Shop there, don't shop there - it's your choice. It's called the 13th Amendment: you are FREE to start your own crummy business, express your views, lose money if people don't like it. Free enterprise. All in all it was a fruitful event, I think the media "got it" (the philosophy behind our rights to free speech, economic freedom & free enterprise).

How likely are you to eat at Chick-fil-A after the establishment announced its stance against same-sex marriage?

That sounds great. Good job. I’ll be watching this evening.

I just got back from the Hollywood Chick-Fil-A @ 6750 West Sunset Boulevard, and they were packed, backed out onto the street five deep for two lanes of drive through cars.

Everyone had big smiles. It was festive. It was pretty obvious why some of the folks where there. It’s catty cornered from Hollywood High School, located on the corner of Highland and Sunset, South East corner. Drive thru is on a street that runs parallel with Highland behind the restaurant.

All the seats in the front were filled, and the walk up windows were five to ten deep the whole time I was there.

Channels, NBC4LA, and ABC7LA were both on site, preparing for this evening’s broadcasts. Honestly, I couldn’t even get out. That area is heavily parked, and there aren’t many spaces. I went as far as three blocks away, and no street parking in sight.

Protesters numbered about six. One had a rainbow flag. There was a sign or two, perhaps more I didn’t see. Protesters were outnumbered by probably 10 to 1 out front. Then there were the drive though cars that might have brought it up in excess of 20 to 1.

One of their signs told cars to honk, and I did hear a fair amount of honking from the street. Nobody in the drive through was. I didn’t see anyone honk and flip them off, but from experience I know how that works. We’ve been out on the street and gotten a dabbling of that. I just wasn’t in a position to see it today.

The food was good. I’d definitely go back. Probably will. It’s five miles away, so it won’t be every week, but I’ll try to give them some business.

Thanks for the note. Good job.

Thanks for the after-action report.

With respect to public agencies (like the Post office, the DMV, or the military), these bureaucracy’s employment and speech policies are collectively decided by a majority. Should gay partners be considered “spouses” for HR benefits if you are in military services for example? That’s not the private (free enterprise) sector. Voters would collectively decide the best policy. Ideally, however, health care benefits are not tied to family and “spousal” definitions in the public sector. Public agencies would simply pay a gross salary based on skills & performance, and those payments can be allocated privately by the employee at will (spent on health care, or insurance benefits for one’s wife, “significant other,” self, children, etc.) without voters or government making those HR policy decisions. Problem solved. Labor unions want to broaden the definition of “spouse” in order to skim union dues off the gross payments for the Rat Party campaigns. It’s not about gay marriage to them, it’s about Bank ($$)...

Thanks again for the Report, it is heartening. :)

BTW: After looking at my photos, I do see around 12 to 15 people at the Chick-Fil-A restaurant protesting. (2:45pm) I was driving and I didn’t see the whole group from where I was.
