James Holmes came to the attention of the threat assessment committee at the University of Colorado but no further action was taken because he left the school more than a month before the attack that killed 12 and injured 58, sources told ABC News.
ABC News has learned that Dr. Lynne Fenton, the psychiatrist who was treating Holmes, 24, at the school, was also a key member of the university's threat assessment team. The group of experts were responsible for protecting the school from potentially violent students.
KMGH-TV, ABC News' affiliate in Denver, reported exclusively that, according to sources, by early June, Fenton had informed other members of the team about her concerns regarding Holmes.
But on June 10 -- three days after Holmes bought an assault weapon and added it to his already growing arsenal -- he suddenly told the university that he was dropping out of the neurosciences doctoral program with no explanation.
KMGH-TV reported last week that he'd purchased the weapon hours after failing a key oral exam.

(I love this handout photo of her with big nutty smile. Maybe botox? Smile seems strained.)
In other words, “He’s not at the school any more, so it’s not our problem.” Nice.
All this means is that lawyers will feast on university’s budget.
Lawyers, shrinks, prison guards, coroners, lab techs, sheriff's deputies, law clerks... right down to the guys who mow the lawn at the courthouse. Democrats all.
Crime is a growth industry, but one reason why the Slave Party is so desperate to destroy family and faith with depravity.
"Holmes had been a student at the University of Colorado, but withdrew last month, according to the university. He was getting a PhD in neuroscience. A "James Holmes" is listed as enrolled in a class at the university called "Biological Basis of Psychiatric and Neurological Disorders."
Holmes also received a B.S. in neuroscience from the University of California Riverside in 2010, where he graduated with honors."
"The day of the shooting, [Amy] Bishop taught her anatomy and neurosciences class and then attended a faculty meeting in the third floor of the Shelby Center for Science and Technology."
"A family source said Bishop, a mother of four children - the youngest a third-grade boy - was a far-left political extremist who was "obsessed" with President Obama to the point of being off-putting."--Boston Herald, February 15, 2010
'Oddball' portrait of Amy Bishop emerges:

This is a University that deals with the brain. If they knew that he was a threat why didn’t they warn the authorities? They should be held responsible for the deaths because they knew.
Is it possible they are covering up because they know that they are the ones who messed him up?
The other day I saw a photo of his car taken from the passenger side. On the front seat there appeared to be a brown rectangle. Could this possible have been the notebook mailed to the U? Someone could have mailed it hoping that it would be opened by the recipient.
Nobody “messed him up”. Serious mental illness has a biological basis and manifests itself at his age range.
Even though identified as a potential threat, there was no way to know when or where or even if he would actually go off.
Do you have a method for discovering and preventing thought-crime?
Couldn't help but notice your post. It's the only other time I've seen anyone else express similar sentiments to my own. An "acceptable" level of crime is indeed good for business. And, you all but said as much but I'll run another one by you: divorce is also good for business. An unintended consequence of the bra burners??? Probably not.
Cadres of Gov’t apparatchiks are salivating at the overtime and millions in salaries paid to deal with this mass murderer in the court and prison system. Not to mention all the lawyers and shrinks who do not get Gov’t paychecks but might as well by the way they are parasitically clamped onto the Judicial systems of which there are countless. State, county, Federale etc etc etc, ad nauseam
My understanding is that his age range is towards the end of the scale.
I say “they messed him up” is if he was over medicated. The brain snapped as a result.
Here’s my reasoning. That university interviews and does a background check etc before they accept a student. Only six students were accepted to that program. He was good enough initially for them to be accepted. Students have a mentor with whom they work closely. Maybe too closely, too controlling. My guess is Fenton was his mentor. She had a habit of dispensing “medication” freely. Stuff happens.
Anyway, it’s too soon to know anything. I’m sure the University will be doing a lot of covering up. They don’t want to lose grants.
Amy Bishop was homely but not frighteningly so..and also very bright. Smart and crazy is a dangerous combination (Hitler, Lenin, Stalin...etc)
Something about Holmes makes me think of Jude Law, it's the eyes I think. He really looks like Law when he played "Gigolo Joe" in the film "A.I"
Drugs, prescription or illegal can be a precipitator, but I think he was showing the earliest symptoms during his internship at the Salk Institute based on the news reports.
My point of view is that the only type of government that might be able to discover and prevent the occasional seriously mentally ill person with extremely dangerous delusions and obsessions would be so oppressive that it’s not even worth trying.
Fact is, even totalitarian regimes have had mentally ill mass murderers, so this casting around looking for scapegoats and causative agents is misdirected and more dangerous than crazy people.
Political oppression via psychiatry was old hat to Stalin and Mao, let’s not go there ourselves in the name of safety from the mentally ill.
Is it possible they are covering up because they know that they are the ones who messed him up?
IMHO, you're closer to the most probable cause than most people discussing the issue.
The small group of six students and one professor at the university with whom Holmes was affiliated, are/were working on chemicals to tinker with the brains of people with PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and their eventual target patients were to be, or already are, combat veterans returning from combat operations.
Reportedly, their project involved injecting rodents' brains with chemicals to alter the behavior of the animals. It is not at all far-fetched to believe that their activities moved on to experimenting with human subjects, with or without official permission, with or without the knowledge or agreement of all the team members.
Good catch. Sure are a lot of coincidences surrounding events leading up to his breaking point.
He left the school? "Oh, then it's not my problem"
Those who prescribe mental pills to make a person "pass" as functional (when they have not regained sanity, only put it under "control") need to be held accountable for their actions more than gun dealers.
If the criminally insane are not going to be held accountable for their actions, then they need to be locked up (institutionalized or kept at home with a legal guardian with them at all times).
Quit restricting the rights of those who have done no wrong and pose no threat to society.
Squeaky Fromme walked out of prison 14Aug09. Age 63 now. Supposedly moved to Marcy NY.
We are dealing with the vanguard of a generation which has been medicated, coddled, told 'good job!' at every turn (regardless of results), who have collected awards for showing up, and who have been staunchly protected from the outrageous ravages of dings in their self-esteem.
Think about that for a second.
They (and no, not all, but enough) are complete strangers to result oriented reality and the possibility of failure. They are not emotionally equipped to cope with having to do something over or get it right the first time.
And their 'can' has been kicked down the road by every person up the line who should have genuinely helped. The 'nanny state' is a failure as a parent.
I have said it before, and I’ll say it again. That woman’s eyes just look strange...(no, not Squeaky)
Jared Lee Loughner’s problems were known well in advance too, but no one followed up on the reports.
Isn’t or wasn’t Marcy, NY home to a notorious NY state Psychiatric hospital?
They knew he was going to open up in a movie theater with multiple weapons and slaughter a dozen people and wound dozens more... Seriously ?
Their assessment team do just that... assess.
Obviously he was doing things that put a flag on him, but nobody can predict the level of violence he was going to commit...they probably thought he was more of a threat to himself than the general public..
I'm not defending the guy, but you are still innocent until proven guilty....if having the signs of mental illness was a reason to hold someone or detain them, all the liberals in Congress should be under observation, some in straight jackets...
~Shooter fails oral exam
~Same day he buys firearm
~June 10- drops out of program
~Early June - Fenton notifies threat assessment committee.
Notice the timing.
Fenton did not notify in January, March, May or when he failed the oral exam.
She notified WHEN he was dropping out. Up to that time he was no threat.
Once he left or was leaving, he was considered a threat. Why? Because he didn’t fill out reason for leaving? Because they could no longer have control over him?
Maybe they were bickering about the failed exam.
Something stinks in that program.
Oh, the threat assessment committee only cares about the safety of their students and not about the general public. So Fenton was concerned that he would do something to another student. Since he was leaving, the threat was no longer there. Makes sense.
The other 5 students should be examined - just in case.
This was going beyond mental illness. This was outright demonic possesion bigtime we were dealing here in regards to James Holmes.
I disagree. I recommend that you, and everyone read “My Brother’s Madness” by Paul Pines - an eloquent and heartbreaking book about his surviving a deeply disturbed family. His brother, who was younger, was driven mad. Biology had nothing to do with it.
I found that out - that divorce was a business years ago. The lawyers provoke conflict to inflate their fees, the real estate people move in for the kill.
OK, that’s it you guys! No more conservative heroes in movies going against “progressives.” You see what happens? Such irresponsibility! /s
Eat snot mah yob! Translation: It's not my job! He's someone else's problem now.
What I can see in those slits for eyes looks evil.
“Do you have a method for discovering and preventing thought-crime?”
Well... I do open my mail on the day that it arrives.
I heard a rumor that Holmes father was somehow connected with the Pentagon and was recently involved in some high security issue, and that his son is actually a drugged stooge brainwashed to silence him.
Begs to question this, where is Holmes father and who is he?
There was nothing authorities could have done, even if concerned people from the university warned them.
My neighbor down the street is strange, very strange. But he’s not a criminal until he commits a crime, and in this country we don’t lock people up because they worry their neighbors or acquaintances.
The only one responsible for this crime is the one who did the act.
Thanks for your thoughtful posts here: a rare breed in these types of threads.
I know someone who's about to get nailed, and yes, you are right on. It's good for business even before the fact... good for the facilitators thereof, and oh so much fun too...
Bingo! I see the calls for that, too, and think “these people just don’t know their history!”
This seems to be just an extreme example of a broader trend for colleges to minimize and not report campus crime (or in this case threat of crime), so as not to ding the school’s reputation or relations with the local community.
Try "warning the authorities" sometime.
Here's a tip: when it comes to dangerous crazy people, there ARE no authorities.
Look, when a crazy guy gets committed, an army of lawyers springs into action to sue the doctor and get the crazy guy out. There is no judge in the country who will hold a crazy guy with an IQ above 90 for more than 48 hours.
I thought the deal was that she notified after he failed, before he dropped out—and they didn’t take it any further once he dropped out?
As usual these lunatics exhibited alarming behavior and then the ball was dropped. They were then free to exact their carnage.
. . . He's locked away, btw . . . thank gawd . . .
It is strange that we haven’t read the usual, ‘his father was this, his mother was that, and his high school principal remembers him as...’
” If they knew that he was a threat why didnt they warn the authorities? They should be held responsible for the deaths because they knew.”
Real life is not TV, and unlike the “Behavioral Analysis Unit” on the Idiot Box screen, real predictive capability is not available. However, history of Russia indicates Goobers in Gooberment agencies will use “psychiatric confinement” to control any person they do not like once they have such authority.
Why should the university be held responsible when they could not know “beyond reasonable doubt”.
May I suggest that evil simply exists, and that evil is best dealt with by those on the scene - armed citizens using their “Natural LAw Right to self defense”.
Please remember that if that movie chain had not banned guns, siad evil could have been greatly reduced.
‘Sue, sue, sue is heard all of the time on this forum which is supposed to be promoting tort reform. Unbelievable”
