Milwaukee gun range voluntarily reports law-abiding customers to local police

Wisconsin -(Ammoland.com)-Wisconsin Carry has learned of some concerning information that we would like to pass along to our membership and right-to-carry interested folks in southeast Wisconsin.

In a recently published Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article which you can read here

It was reported that the former Badger Guns (now Brew City Shooters Supply) http://www.brewcityshooterssupply.com/ has, since 2009, been reporting the names of every customer that comes in to use their firing range to the West Milwaukee Police Department.

In this time over 25,000 customer names were reported to West Milwaukee Police Chief Dennis Nasci who ran a background check on each through “his system”.

So far in 2012 it was reported more than 8,800 customer name records have been supplied to West Milwaukee Police by Brew City Shooters Supply to have a criminal background check run on them.

We do not know yet, how else West Milwaukee Police have been using these records they have been given by Brew City Shooters Supply, nor if they are storing those customer names for future reference. We also do not know what other purposes West Milwaukee Police might choose to use these customer name lists for in the future.

You need to do a WI ping, not sure how to do it or I would.

I hope concerned shooters put the word out about this place.

I know that I'd NEVER go back to a range if I learned that they pulled this crap.

We have the same setup here in Yuma County with Adare Range. It is state owned. The BP, YCSO, and YPD have their own range on the west end. It’s free to use. The only thing asked is you police up your brass before you leave. I friken love living in Arizona!

I’ve used that range on occasion and never had to give my name. I just paid the fee and went on in.

Wait, someone is knocking on my door...

" See, the market takes care of stuff like this."

I sort of agree with you but if the market could take care of stuff like this we wouldn't be living in the festering toilet bowl called the United States of America.

The 50% of us that are honest, tax paying, hardworking and moral are going to have to get very aggressive and confrontational - or we are going to get steamrolled.

This is the only convenient range in the central part of Milwaukee.

There is another indoor range a few miles west, but it’s much smaller. Otherwise, there are some private clubs south of the city and west of the city. There is an indoor range in Waukesha and a public range on the west side of Waukesha County.

We went four-wheeling two summers ago somewhere east and south of Phoenix way off the beaten path and happened onto several different groups of guys who had set up shooting areas off the beaten track. Several dressed like they were maybe military. Standing by one of their pick-ups was an obviously not happy guy staring down at and periodically kicking a very flat tire - stray bullet maybe?

Lived out there for five years. Most of the state is awesome. Would love to move back.

“I am pretty unhappy right this minute.”

So was I so I looked then up and sent them a “little note.”

Oh, I agree — I was just being facetious. Read my following post to see how I really feel about other people waiving our privacy rights for us. Any time something like that happens, it makes me want to break into their computer systems (not that I have the know-how to do that) and spread all THEIR information far and wide. When they complain, you just say “What, that’s what you did to your customers — did you do something to them you wouldn’t appreciate having done to you??”

Believe it or not, it was the actions of a fictional character that first got me thinking about this issue (voluntarily yielding to LEO’s who are after someone with whom you have an existing relationship). Dirk Struan, the captain of a trading ship in several of James Clavell’s books, had a man on his ship accused of some ill deed. He told the cops who came to claim the guy that if they could prove the guy’s guilt, they could hang him right there on the ship, but that absent that proof, not only would he not passively surrender the guy, he and the rest of the crew would fight his capture with force of arms. I got to thinking Isn’t that really the way it should be? If you know someone well and have never seen any evidence of criminality on their part, don’t you owe it to them not to take the state’s word over theirs unless some proof can be provided? Or as in the type cases I referred to earlier, at least require the cops to jump through the hoops to comply with the laws created to protect us from over-zealous enforcement?

Yep. I went there once after I made a purchase. I am not impressed that they got my money and shared my info. Actually, I am angry. I doubt an email will mean a thing, but we may go there and discuss it with them. Definitely will not be spending any more money there.

With all the notoriety Badger Guns had, they probably had to make a deal with the cops to even stay open. I guess I never thought they did this.
There is a gun club in the next town over, I think. I better check them out.

"West Milwaukee Police Chief Dennis Nasci who ran a background check on each through 'his system'"

Looks like he is planning to round up those guns when the right time comes.

Uh, don't they need probable cause to run you through the "system?" Or are we all suspects of something now?

Somebody needs to hit the West Milwaukee police with a FOIA request to find out what they have done with that information and what records were kept.

I wondered why a gun shop owner would voluntarily adopt a policy so likely to destroy his business.

The story is here. The comments are good.
