Virgil Goode's candidacy may help Obama
roanoke.com ^ | Aug 1 2012 | By Associated Press

Posted on 08/03/2012 3:44:31 PM PDT by NoLibZone

Most people outside Southwest Virginia have never heard of Virgil Goode, a former Franklin County congressman with a distinctive drawl who conceivably could decide the presidential election. But he is well known to President Barack Obama's team of political advisers.

Goode served six terms in Congress and is gathering signatures to appear on the ballot here as the presidential candidate from the Constitution Party.

He's already on the ballot in more than a dozen other states with an anti-immigration, pro-term limit platform he hopes makes a dent with the electorate.

It's not likely to be much of a dent, but enough in Virginia for Obama campaign officials to take close notice of his potentially helpful candidacy.

But within the Obama camp he is considered one of two who could tilt the race by pulling votes away from Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

The other is Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson, a former two-term Republican governor of New Mexico whose presence on the ballot could make a difference in the presidential contest in states such as New Mexico and Colorado.

But Democrats see Goode and Johnson as this year's Ralph Nader, whom they still blame for Al Gore's loss to George W. Bush in 2000.

"If Virgil Goode gets on the ballot in Virginia that is going to make it very tough on Romney," said Democratic strategist Joe Trippi, a veteran of presidential campaigns. It's difficult to imagine Romney getting the 270 electoral votes he needs to win if he doesn't carry Virginia, Trippi said, adding that Goode "would be potentially crippling to Romney."

The only possible impact this guy may have is in Virginia.

With 3 months to go to the election, 90% of the people on FR are better known than this guy, and he doesn’t have the $$ to do a Perot.

Having said that, if Virginia is the key to victory and he pulls the 5% that some claim he will, then nothing says “Dem Win” like a Clintonian plurality.

How much money in campaign funds can he expect from the Dems? Woodrow Wilson had his friends fund Teddy Roosevelt’s third party run in 1912, a similar situation.

Those who want to support Goode can get more bang for their buck by sending their donations directly to Obama. It will cut out the middleman.

Virgil Goode’s candidancy DOES NOT help Obama. His candidancy rightly HURTS ROMNEY who should NOT be the GOP candidate. IF Romney wasn’t the GOP candidate then many of us would not be voting for Virgil Goode. The GOPe and the idiots in the party that voted for Romney created this mess. Virgil Goode is just the way to send them a message that Romney (or those like him) are NOT viable candidates for the GOP.

Well I don’t know about them, but THIS conservative Republican may send him some money. Romney SHOULD NOT be the GOP candidate. It utterly disgusts me that Mitt Romney is representing the GOP. I WILL NOT support him ever. I will not help him ruin the GOP. He is evil, just as Obama is evil. You don’t sensible fight evil with more evil.

Barring something unforeseen, our next President is either going to be Romney or Obama. Any votes these guys take from Romney are fewer votes Obama needs to win. That is the mathematics of it.

Perot and Nader are the history of it.

Unless someone can show me that someone other than Romney or Obama can win in November, I'm holding my nose and voting ABO.

“Tell Jim Robinson he is a “Romney supporter” because he opposes Romney.”

That should read - “Tell Jim Robinson he is an “Obama supporter” because he opposes Romney.”

Jim Robinson vehemently opposes Romney, as do I. Romney should NOT be the GOP candidate. Romney is a pro-homosexual, pro-abortion, pro-gun grabber, and pro big government statism. He is NOT a conservative in any way, shape, form, or manner. Being ABO is NOT enough reason to vote for him. It is a foolish path to go down.

IMO, supporting Romney just keeps ensuring that the GOP establishment will keep backing others like Romney in the future.

While I appreciate your zeal for Rep. Goode, even if he was ,by some miracle, to gain the Republican nomination and then, by an even greater miracle (I’m talkin’, stop the sun in its path miracle) win the Presidency, he would not be able to put the toothpaste back into the tube as concerns the same sex or abortion controversies. He would have to deal with the situations as they now exist. I don’t believe Gov. Romney is pro same sex marriage or pro abortion. I think he is just living in Realville when he speaks on those subjects. He does leave me cold on the gun thing, but two out of three isn’t bad

Fella, I only called on Jim Robinson because he:

(1) Owns this website.
(2) Has repeatedly expressed his “dislike” for Romney - as you just found out.
(3) Doesn’t like being told he is a “Obama Supporter” because he opposes Romney.
(4) Doesn’t like it when other conservatives, like myself, are denigrated in this manner.

Folks ALL the things that Free Republic is FOR (see Jim Robinson’s general message) are NOT qualities that Mitt Romney has. Ergo...get a clue. FR is NOT a place to be “singing the praises of Romney.” FR is the home of the resistance to the GOPe and Romney that currently represents the GOPe!

“I don’t believe Gov. Romney is pro same sex marriage or pro abortion. I think he is just living in Realville when he speaks on those subjects.”

First of all. I am NOT zealous for Goode. I am against Mitt Romney and the GOP establishment that manipulated getting him the nomination. Virgil Goode is just the most viable way to express my anger with the GOPe picking Romney.

Next...Romney’s record does NOT support what you say about him (he has a clear history of supporting homosexuals, abortion, etc.). Also, as I have told others. FR is NOT a place to be singing Romney’s praise.

Saying you are voting for Romney because you want Anyone But Obama (ABO) is one thing. However, when one actually starts saying Romney is OK....that is pushing the envelope.

Read post #29 to get the feeling of Jim Robinson’s, the website owner’s, view on Mitt Romney. He dislikes Romney more than I. Like I said, this isn’t a place to sing Romney’s praise.

Hey, if you take "ABO" literally -- not euphemistically (as most FREEPERs use it)...ABO = Virgil Goode as well.

Virgil Goode is "anybody but Obama."

You are to funny. You make an implied threat to someone in post 17 but you have no qualms in making a threat to me. I stand by my statements. I feel the country is on the precipice and this election is that important. IMHO a RINO is better than a Marxist. I am fighting the down stream battles like Ted Cruz over Dewhurst. By the way I was with Jim at Searchlight supporting Sarah and the Tea Party movement. Apparently we differ on the Romney part. My support was for Sarah and then Newt.

I don’t believe Gov. Romney is pro same sex marriage or pro abortion.

How in the world is the following statement not pro-abortion????

December 4, 2007: Romney: ...surplus embryos...Those embryos, I hope, could be available for adoption for people who would like to adopt embryos. But if a parent decides they would want to donate one of those embryos for purposes of research, in my view, that's acceptable. It should not be made against the law." (Source: Candidates Reveal Their Biggest Mistakes)

At what point do embryos "graduate" into humanity, Mitt? At what point do embryos "graduate" into humanity, 1raider1?

What if somebody said to you, "Prove to me you think that offspring sacrifice is 'OK' as Mitt says it is by sacrificing your own former embryos..."???

Goode does not stand a chance like a snowball in hell.

Unlike OTHER races, the POTUS isn't elected by popular vote...he is elected electorally...state by state...

One poll -- even before Goode has qualified for the Virginia ballot -- has him at 9% in VA without even "pushing" it...

If we were wagering people (and I'm not)...what $ would you give me for Romney to win ANY of the following states:
* NY
* NJ
* Connecticut
* RI
* Delaware
* Maryland
* Hawaii
* Vermont
* Washington
* Oregon
* California
* Illinois
* Maine
* Massachusetts

(Perhaps with such easy $ available, I should start offering bets to various FREEPERs...all Romney has to do is to take ONE of these states to win the bet...If we started each wage @ a $1,000 a pop, I'd become fairly wealthy with enough takers...At the end of it all, I'd have to tell them...sorry...this isn't the Olympics...no "silver medal" for Mitt awaits for him in these states...no such thing as "medaling" in the POTUS race)

So...will you be consistent, Parley...are you going to tell potential Romney voters in the above states that their candidate likewise has a chance of taking the above electoral votes fairly equal to the chance of a "snowball in hell."???

If FREEPERs were really principled conservatives, they would at least tell conservative voters in the above states to vote for anybody but Obama and Romney [the ABOAR voters]! (Goode, for example, is already on the ballot in Oregon)

But...I think true colors emerge for some of the (new) RINOs among us...

By the way has Goode been “vetted”. Do you really know who Goode is?

(Most former Congressmen have been "vetted" -- not always to the nth degree)
