Despite the renewed debate over gun control since the mass murder in Aurora, Colo., Northeast Ohio Democrats are mixed on whether the issue can be a winning one for their party this Fall.
In Patch's latest survey of influential party members in Northeast Ohio, Democratic insiders were mixed on whether gun control was a battle worth fighting.
About half said they thought the issue could galvanize the state's Democrats in November, but the other half also said that would be bad politics considering the strength of pro-gun interest groups and the overall acceptance of guns by Ohioans.
"Gun control is bad politics in Ohio," said one insider who responded to the survey. "Only three Ohio Governors in the forty years since Kent State have been Democrats, and they all downplayed the gun-control issue. Ohio definitely sits in the gun-freedom column of states, and Democrats should not be eager to annoy this segment of voters."
Democrats surveyed were also mixed on whether pushing gun control would help or hinder the party's effort to win over vital undecided voters.
"Gun lobby is strong in Ohio and the President doesn't need another 'hot potato' issue that would allienate those undecided voters," said one insider.
Despite their own support for gun control, especially a ban on assault weapons, these Democrats seemed resigned to believe the issue was a non starter.
"Unfortunately, I think the 'right to bear arms' supercedes the need for overdue reform," an insider said.
LOL....the Dims should definitely run with gun control. And outlawing football because of concussions would be another great idea.
Talk about being totally out of touch with America.........
That sums it up well. The libs just can't get around that pesky Constitution. But I think that's "Fortunately."
Note that they all are for restricting our rights, the disagreement is on the how and when.
Did notice one of the posts was almost standard Fast & Furious narrative. Is Media Matters paying by the post these days?
A gun owner voting Democrat is like a Jew voting NAZI.
Money quote. Applies to how they feel about 1st Amendment when it comes to religion. This should be in every campaign ad in Ohio. Note that it is said in anonomity. Ball-less commies
As always, Freepers appreciate your diligence in searching out these gun articles marktwain, you are truly a patriot of the first order.
What is over due for reform is the Democrats mentality that Government can control criminal behavior.
The only thing that controls criminal behavior is the fear of swift retaliation; be that the armed citizen or be that swift and sure prosecution of the law.
Right now the second option has been nearly nullified by the courts. The prisons are a revolving door for criminals. And the prisons themselves have become a retreat for criminals to rest up and get in shape.
Reform should make trials speedy and prisons some place that criminals fear and maybe we can take a bite out of crime.
Reform should also stop local government from violating the sober citizen right to bare arms openly or concealed in any place of public accommodation. If just a few people in that movie theater had been armed perhaps Mr. Holmes would be resting comfortably in the grave today.
The obvious lesson of this latest mass shooting that the gun control gang fail to mention is that the police no matter how quick to the seen of a crime can not protect you. The police were in the parking lot at the time of the shooting and they did not stop the shooter. He stopped himself.
Only a substantial minority of armed citizens is needed to put the fear of god in the criminal. If a criminal knows there is a good chance there will be an armed citizen present he is much less likely to commit a crime.
Go All In, Libtards!!
Don’t joke about the outlawing of football. Boxing used to be a competitive sport in high schools and colleges, yet where do you see even one academic curriculum that still includes this formerly widespread sport? Boxing was around until about 1950 or so as a high school interscholastic sport, and for several years after as an intermural activity, but you would be hard pressed today to even find a set of souvenir boxing gloves in the trophy display case.
But is boxing so much more dangerous? It certainly has fallen into the control of very dangerous people, and its participants are the most feral humans on the planet. It seems that football, too, is falling into the control of very dangerous people.
Consider Penn State and Jerry Sandusky. The wall is beginning to crack. All it takes now is a group on the order of “Mothers Against Drunk Driving” (MADD), perhaps “Mothers Against Contact Sports” (MACS).
I am not advocating the outlawing of football, as it is a very lucrative source of income for team owners, broadcasting media, and even many college campuses. There have been repeated revisions of the rules governing what is permissible and what is not permissible on the field and off over the years, but the pressure is definitely building for the total abolition of the sport. And it is all political.
Are we going to have to have a Chick-fil-A moment to preserve the tradition of football?
Gets my vote for thought for the day.
Would look good on a bumper sticker.
They were unavailable for comment as they were attending the Democrat City Government Awards, celebrating their successes in places like Dayton, Toledo, Akron and Cleveland.
You forgot Hockey because of the fights, Nascar because of the wrecks and any other activity that the nanny state Dims decide does not fit into their totally controlled socialist state utopia.
I believe that the Dims should campaign on on total gun control along with state enforced vegan-ism and of course full legalization of gay marriage, because as we all know those are all winning ideas. /S (I think I need a bigger sarcasm tag).
Libtards always have it bassackwards.
It should be, "How do we get more guns into the hands of responsible law abiding citizens?"
Because it is obvious that all the "feel good" libtard gun "control" has not even slowed the criminals ability to get guns.
Notice that the democrats only concern is if gun control advocacy will be good or bad for their election - not what is right or wrong, best for the citizenry or what is constitutional.
Typical Donkey thinking.
Some real names would be even more interesting. I never trust an article that conceals names.
Not much of a newspaper if you ask me.
Heck, the Republicans should run on the Democrat party platform, giving a list of what the Democrat party supports all at once, instead of one thing at a time.
1) Late term and partial birth, taxpayer funded abortions, forcing people to renounce their religious faith to provide them.
2) Encouraging the weak, sick and elderly to kill themselves, and telling doctors to no longer provide life saving screening for deadly lung, breast, colonoscopy and prostate cancer screening, so they won’t be found until it’s too late.
3) Massive increases in taxation for everyone, while giving billions of taxpayer dollars to rich Democrat party donors and cutting back on services for the poor.
4) Astounding increases in the size and power of the federal government, the rejection of free enterprise and capitalism except for rich, Democrat party bankers and speculators.
Bottom line: Please don’t vote against the American people by voting for Democrats.
Charles Krauthammer, no fan of the 2nd Amendment, recently said that this is a dead issue. Neither party is seriously talking gun control because the majority of the people do not want it. It is a vote killer. I wish the people felt the same about government health care.
I feel the same way about liberals voting. Can we get some “reform” on that?
