In the wake of the Virginia Tech tragedy five years ago, the University of Colorado and other schools across the U.S. created "threat assessment teams" to identify and take action against students who might turn violent. Now, in the aftermath of the movie theater rampage in Aurora, some are wondering whether the system broke down.

I’m going with James Holmes is at fault. Some people are just so smart with the power of hindsight.
Well, if nothing else, the profession of psychiatry ought to be seen for the useless vanity (at the very least) that it is.
I'd suggest that their "system" was seriously flawed in its conception. Any U that would hire Ward Churchill is clearly incompetent.
Exactly. The school’s not at fault. The theater’s not at fault. The guns aren’t at fault. This was a terrible, terrible crime committed by one person, James Holmes.
Then again, wasn’t there a similar situation with the AZ massacre?
If these sorts of things tend to be done by schizophrenics, who tend to be bright males in their early to mid-20’s when their condition fully develops AND they tend to be identified as security risks on their college campuses, don’t you think there might be some way of having them checked out more closely for the general public, not just for campus safety?
Every person I’ve ever known that entered into Psychology did so because they were head cases. Psychology is not a hard science.
So now we can just subject smart males who are weird to interrogation? Who gets this power to decide who is dangerous?
And figured they could fix themselves on the cheap. Really, who better to understand me than me? This crazy world has put so much emphasis on a degree that only those with one have the capability to render the educated answer in their bizarre worldview.
I did not see compulsory interrogation in that statement, just the ability to recognize the warning flags. A little investigation in this case of multiple warning flags would have resulted in huge benefits. Especially if he was receiving weapons and/or ammunition at the college.
In Florida as a CCW permit holder, I cannot drive through a university campus with a weapon, secured or not (even locked in the trunk), without being in violation of the current laws. Even if I did not stop, except at a traffic light.

I live a block off the UF campus, so I understand the CCW aspect. I think it’s a stupid idea to not allow CCW on campus.(no alcohol on UF campus either)
I doubt he had the weapons and ammo sent to the school. If so, they could have notified the authorities. What power does the school have against a 24 y/o former student?
Shipping records show he received over 90 packages sent directly to him at the campus section he was working/learning at.
Were any of them guns or ammo? If yes, that might change things. I would assume it’s normal for a researcher to get plenty of packages delivered to their respective labs. Was his department aware of the threat assessment team’s involvement with James Holmes? Could the team legally provide any information to his department?
I just don’t like people trying to push any blame away from the true criminal, James Holmes.
No blame intended to be diverted for his actions, absolutely not. But if anyone was notified and they did not at least check out the shipper, that was negligence at worst and just plain stupid in the best.
Since the judge placed a gag order on all the investigations and evidence shortly after learning of these shipments, we don’t know and the scary thing is if they remain that way, we may never know.
Either way, the whole program is seriously flawed.
True. I didn’t mean to imply you personally as diverting responsibility away from James Holmes, more the media and internet comments. Maybe we’ll get the truth someday.

Yeah, but he doesn’t have any money. This smacks of a lawyer’s search for “deep pockets.”
BTW: The Theater IS, in part, responsible because they banned concealed weapons. They should face a heavy penalty for preventing people from defending themselves.
My point re: smartness is that they are often in college.
I’m talking about those whom schools believe to be a risk to the point that they’d kick them off their own campus for safety concerns. Clearly the issue is mental illness and we have IMO gone too far in keeping society from protecting itself.
