A 66-year-old shop owner shot a man in the foot Wednesday night after he allegedly caught the man and an accomplice stealing expensive tools from his Kansas City store.
Police arrested two men shortly before midnight.
The owner of Inner City Tire Repair at 5261 Prospect Ave. learned about the break-in from a friend who lives near his shop.
Police reports said the friend saw a vehicle southbound on Prospect and noticed the driver turned off the headlights and pulled the vehicle into the shops driveway. He knew the vehicle didnt belong there, so he went into his backyard and hid behind bushes to watch what the vehicles occupants were doing. After seeing two people break in through the front door, he ran to a neighbors residence to call the owner. He also called police.
The owner drove to his shop and parked down the street. He said he walked to the shop, stood in a darkened yard and watched as one burglar carried items from the business to the vehicle in the driveway. The owner said, Hold it! which startled the man. The man turned to face the owner, and the owner shot at him. He said he was afraid the burglar had a gun.
The wounded man ran away. The owner yelled into the store for the second man to surrender.
Officers arrived and saw a wounded man fleeing. They arrested him and convinced a second man to surrender from his hiding place in the shop by threatening to release a police dog.
Police recovered the owners gun from his pocket.

“Police recovered the owners gun from his pocket.”....
“Recovered”? Why didn’t the reporter say “confiscated”?
They will keep the gun forever and it will cost the shop owner in more ways than one. Like some guy named Zimmerman, the shop owner will be the guilty one..........just saying......
Police dogs often lose their canine teeth one way or another, so there is now some veterinary dentistry to replace those missing canines with titanium ones.
Really sharp titanium ones. You definitely do not want to be bitten with those.
I found out from my dentist that it is not a good idea for people to go for titanium implants, as people live so long that the hardness of the titanium will translate into a fractured jaw.
And a short time ago my dentist told me that there is now an ultra hard, pure ceramic cap that has to be machined to fit, that looks like normal teeth, so the days of titanium teeth may be drawing to a close.
All the more reason to practice shooting in the dark.
