Kennedy clan barred from historic Hyannis Port lawn
NY Post ^ | august 5, 2012 | ISABEL VINCENT and MELISSA KLEIN

The Hyannis Port lawn where the political clan famously played football is off limits these days to relatives unless they pay rent, as a family feud over the Edward M. Kennedy Institute simmers.

The institute is supposed to carry on Ted Kennedy’s legacy with a 40,000-square-foot facility at the University of Massachusetts campus in Boston. But it also now owns the main house in the Kennedy compound — the storied home of Joe and Rose Kennedy where the family gathered in good times and in bad.

Kennedy’s widow, Vicki, donated the home to the Institute in January, as per Ted and Rose’s wishes, and decreed that other Kennedy family members who want to use the lawn or the pool and tennis courts will have to come to a rental agreement with the nonprofit.

The mission of the EMK Institute for the United States Senate is to provide educational programs on government and democracy, and the new UMass facility, under construction, will include a mock-up of the Senate chambers.

The EMK Institute is to open in 2014. It received $32 million in government grants in 2010, according to tax filings.

The group spent $753,575 on “collectibles” in 2010. The money was used to buy Andy Warhol prints from Kennedy’s 1980 campaign and 752 copies of his book, “True Compass,”

LOL! They are “kennedys and they don’t
pay”... Paying is for little people

The clan has skiied at Aspen for years because of the freebies they demand and get

Donating inherited property to get a big tax write-off has its consequences

EMK Institute = Edwward M. Kennedy Institute

It received $32 million in government grants in 2010, according to tax filings

Taxpayer money mis-spent to idolize Ted Kennedy

The group spent $753,575 on “collectibles” in 2010. The money was used to buy Andy Warhol prints from Kennedy’s 1980 campaign and 752 copies of his book, “True Compass,”

Taxpayer money funneled back to the Kennedys.

What are they carrying on? Drinking, raping and driving cars into the drink?

I'm gonna be about 90 minutes from this "shrine" when it opens up.I'll be sure to visit and, while there, ask guides such things as "is the the room where Mr Kennedy concocted the story that allowed him to avoid a murder charge?"

And I'll ask these question quite loudly....until the police are called to escort me out.

Hopefully they will have room to display Ted's well known Oldsmobile (the assault weapon of choice for the Kennedy Klan)

I’m pretty sure the town is PO’d. because they are losing, iirc, ~$50K annually, in property tax assessment because of the tax status change to a “non-profit”.

Well,U Mass Boston *is* right on the harbor. It certainly wouldn't be difficult to catapult *another* Oldsmobile into the Atlantic.

I’m of two minds on this.

While it would greatly reduce the litter of crack vials, used needles, broken liquor bottles and include as well as a great reduction in murder, mayhem, and violence against women by the Kennedy Klan there might be a better solution.

A modest proposal; enclosing the large park with East German style fencing, guard towers, and barrier mine fields. Then forcing every single K-Klan member and hanger-on to live there for the rest of their unnatural lives with no chance for parole. A kind of state wildlife refuge coupled with reality TV. Paying visitors could watch Klan antics on jumbotrons in theaters at the periphery of the park or choose the monorail ride. Global broadcasts could perhaps garner enough money to assist in reducing the National Debt for which the Klan played a strong role. And of course all of Klan assests in trusts and various foundations would be immediately seized under Rico statutes and Patriot Act provisions.

Great. Then they can add it to the engineering curriculum AND create a psychology lab to study sychophantic behavior.

So, the “Bog Trotter Clan” as PJ O’Rourke dubbed them is playing Kilkenny Cats amongst the family factions?

More popcorn is called for.

Excellent post.

Probably won’t be much space at the Institute devoted to his romantic escapades or the cheating scandal at Harvard.

Sure wish the Kennedys would just go away, but the media won’t stop talking about them.

Don’t you just hate FRee-loaders? Only the Kennedys could make such a mess of a legacy.. well, the Clintons are giving ‘em a good run.

more concerned with legacy than blood

guess that has always been apparent...I can think of other rich families I'd rather be born into

however...having a family vacation home that large and costly to maintain and with property taxes in the stratosphere it would be difficult to get everyone to pony up (been there done that)

a family trust to maintain the home for the next generations would have been nice but I bet Rose and Teddy were banking on the "historical" aspect too....liberals will flock there to bask in Camelot's faded glow

The car belonged to Rose. The swimmer borrowed it, probably without permission.

Wardaddy, The Kennedy’s faced the same problem you did... that’s why they rolled the property into a non profit. Nothing says it has to be open to the public during the summer season (or at all). Tax bills go away, just need to raise enough donations to cover maintenance & operating costs. You hire pro’s to apply for grants etc. Even if only your family “contributes” it’s now a tax deduction instead of an expense. You can even write off the milage when you drive down for the weekend to discuss “foundation business” while sitting on the beach.

Along these lines, Bill Clinton has not spent a penny of his own money since he left office. Some foundation or lobbying group is always picking up tab. Every meal, every flight, every hotel stay is on someone elses dime.
