Actually, some "neighborhoods" DO have FOUR ACRE lots. I used to walk such a neighborhood from the 1960s. And let me tell you, the streets were no wider than any other, no better equipped for congestion, the homes had one standard driveway and more than a few vehicles overflowed onto the lawn as an eyesore for all to see.

He's got all the right to assemble (although this is not for political purposes) he wants, he just can't bring in 80 people err "friends and family," in dozens of automobiles, to his neighborhood again and again and again.

It not even about a freedom of religion since he's not being prevented from free exercise of his INDIVIDUAL right. He's started a church and is lying about it.

If he doesn't like the local zoning laws, SELL THE HOUSE and MOVE or move the services to an appropriate venue, properly zoned.

Oh, I could get my whole neighborhood into a tailspin. I am the president of our house association. Any way I want to protray neighbors, I can. We have Bible study leaders that live here. It’s no different than the weekly keg parties for the football games.

Stop being a mindless follower of the herd. There are controlers of the herd. Who is the controler of the herd and what is their history and agenda. Atheist much?

I have a 4 acre lot, and an 8 acre lot. The 4Ac lot is on a steep slope, so we can only park about 20 or so cars there, but the 8 Ac lot is flat, and we can easily parl 200 - 300 cars there with abundant room to spare.

The neighbors are insane haters.

The guy in Phoenix does not have 4 acres..only 1.5...but that is not the point. The neighborhood was zoned residential, not commercial and the guy was moving his property towards more of a commercial use.

Again there are hundreds of thousands of Bible studies in homes throughout this country every week without any problem.

What part of EIGHTY PEOPLE don’t you understand?

Do you really think the pastor would have gotten the same jail house treatment if he was running a mosque rather than a bible study?

What part of religious bigotry don't you understand?

I see the neighborhood on google maps. even if 60 cars showed up their is no probability of hideous congestion. Heck, there's still freakin farm animals and a scrapyard within shouting distance. It's more likely the city of Phoenix doesn't want to zone another church, there are at least 1/2 dozen churches within a mile of there. More likely the gang-associated aspect of it disturbs the city government. Maybe they would prefer subdivision so as to increase the tax base - it's obvious this as already occurred in some lots.

As the fellow has demonstrated with his impromptu prison ministry, wherever he goes God is already there. So he could move. But frankly, zoning has to be founded on legitimate concerns, not spite. He has a large property so he may accomodate and entertain friends and family for private social events every week. He has a large family - I bet his friends do too. Where shall we exile him to? Where will it end? Who in the city government made the decision this vendetta was worth the taxpayer's dollar? 'Cause it does seem very much an utterly pointless vendetta.

Churches are not commercial, and have traditionally been solely located in residential neighborhoods.

Nice try though.

This one was no problem either.

I’m sure you’d feel differently if it were a bunch of gay body oilers.

What is antichristian? When was I ever antichristian? I never was.

The problem with this guy isn’t anything to do with Christianity, Mormonism, or any religion. The problem is the number of cars in a neighborhood.

No he wasn’t jailed for having bible studies in his home.

He was jailed for too many cars/too much traffic and not heeding warnings to quit.

it had nothing to do with what was going on in the home - unless the fact that it was bible study actually extended the time he was allowed to correct it.

Although the invitations to criminals would certainly raise alarms (I remember what happened in our own area soon after a questionable company put in an asphalt driveway) that isn’t what this ruckus from the neighborhood was all about.

Other Freepers, upthread, got it, told it. You’ve decided you’re not going to get it. That’s your right.

Christ is a “public nuisance” to those such as yourself, that hate him.

We have 5 acres and a polite neighborhood where everyone has that or more.

Not one of my neighbors is or would be so mean spirited as to regularly invite 80 people over each week.

You must live in a really tough neighborhood to assume that everyone who enjoys piece and quiet 'hates Christ'.

I hope things start looking up for you.

The interesting thing is that Christians and churches themselves have implied to the world that New Testament Christianity actually requires properties and buildings.

Of course it does not.

We serve in foreign countries where churches which do not register with the government are not allowed to have separate dedicated facilities at all. Of course, if the church will register, the government will provide the facility. Problem is, the government will also want to provide the ministers and also tell them what to preach and what they cannot preach.

So, no Bible-believing, Bible-practicing church will register with the government. So, the meet in rented apartments : some sympathetic believer will rent the meeting place in his own name---it will be furnished for church use and used by the congregation.

If the congregation grows to between 50 and 75 people, it will split into two groups and meet in different locations. Some churches have 400 or more meeting in 9 or 10 groups. Then, once every five or six weeks, the whole church will have a special gathering in a hotel meeting room, at a resort, or park, or . . . etc.

Bible-believing and practicing churches in the USA may soon have to practice the same way.
